Health Teams Hit Bahrain's biggest Mall
TDT | Manama Visitors to Avenues Mall recently had the chance to get their blood pressure checked on the spot, thanks to a joint hypertension awareness campaign by American Mission Hospital and RCSI Medical University of Bahrain. The campaign transformed a retail space into a health checkpoint, where doctors, nurses, and student volunteers offered free screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, and BMI, along with lifestyle-based medical advice. The initiative aimed to alert residents to the risks of high blood pressure, a condition often without symptoms but potentially life-threatening if left unchecked. Bringing care closer The event, held ahead of World Hypertension Day, ran through May 24th and focused on reaching people in everyday settings. 'By engaging with the public and providing basic screenings and guidance for hypertension, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, we strive to make a tangible difference,' said H.E. Dr Jameela AlSalman, Director of Quality and Infection Disease at American Mission Hospital and a Member of the Shura Council. Alongside doctors and nurses, medical and nursing students from RCSI Bahrain played an active role in welcoming visitors and conducting screenings, offering both service and support under academic supervision. Joint mission for health Peter Kennedy, Chief Operating Officer of American Mission Hospital, and Dr Eman Tawash, Deputy Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at RCSI Bahrain, were present at the launch. Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of the Nursing School, highlighted the shared vision between the two institutions. 'By providing healthcare education, we aim to empower individuals to manage their health proactively and mitigate potential risks associated with hypertension.' Focus on prevention Experts warn that hypertension can go unnoticed for years. Although usually asymptomatic, it may cause headaches, dizziness, or blurred vision. Risk factors include poor diet, stress, lack of exercise, and genetic predisposition. Organisers say that regular screenings and early interventions are key to avoiding more serious complications down the line. The campaign underlined a simple message - good health can begin anywhere, even during a casual walk through a mall.

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain explores collaboration opportunities with Turkish Ambassador
29 April: The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) – Medical University of Bahrain welcomed Her Excellency Dr Ayşe Hilal Sayan Koytak, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the Kingdom of Bahrain, along with Mr Abdulkadir Yaman and Ms Duygu Yagci, Third Secretaries from the Turkish Embassy to its campus. The meeting featured a presentation by Mr Stephen Harrison-Mirfield, Managing Director, which showcased the University's growth and progression within the Kingdom since its inception in 2004. This was followed by a presentation by Professor Stephen Atkin, Head of the School of Postgraduate Studies and Research, which highlighted the University's ongoing oncology research and the potential for collaborative opportunities with hospitals and universities in Türkiye. Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, stated: 'We were delighted to welcome Her Excellency Dr Ayşe Hilal Sayan Koytak, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye, to our campus to discuss potential collaborative opportunities. We are committed to fostering avenues for student research and overseas electives, ensuring our students gain valuable international experience and preparing them to become well-rounded professionals who excel in their chosen fields.' Her Excellency expressed her support for any collaboration efforts and highlighted the opportunity for Turkish students to gain valuable international experience while studying in Bahrain, and further supported plans to establish links with Turkish universities for research and clinical electives. RCSI Bahrain Appoints Professor Husain Nasaif as Director of MSc in Nursing Programme
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) – Medical University of Bahrain has announced the appointment of Professor Husain Nasaif as Director of the Master of Science (MSc) in Nursing Programme. Professor Nasaif, an Associate Professor in Nursing at RCSI Bahrain, brings a wealth of academic and clinical expertise to his new role. He holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Educational Leadership from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, USA, and a Master's degree in Advanced Practice Nursing. Additionally, he has undergone advanced training in leadership and knowledge synthesis through prestigious programmes at Harvard Medical School and the University of Toronto. Since joining RCSI Bahrain in 2009, Professor Nasaif has held several key leadership positions, including Director of the Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Nursing (Hons) Programme and Director of the Nursing Bridging Programme. His dedication to academic leadership and nursing education has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the university's nursing curriculum. As Director of the MSc in Nursing Programme, Professor Nasaif will focus on developing specialised postgraduate nursing programmes that integrate cutting-edge research and knowledge. Collaborating with the School of Nursing & Midwifery, he aims to elevate the academic and professional standards of nursing education. He will also continue his research in advanced nursing practice, workforce health and wellbeing, men's health, and the evaluation of nursing education systems. Commenting on the appointment, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Bahrain, said: "We are delighted to welcome Professor Nasaif into this pivotal leadership role.
