RCSI Bahrain sends nurses to Taiwan for training

The initiative follows a follow-up visit by a senior delegation from RCSI Bahrain to the National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences (NTUNHS) in April. The collaboration builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2024, and includes student clinical placements, joint research initiatives, and professional development programmes for faculty.
Leading the delegation were Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Dr Maryam Alaradi, Director of the BSc Nursing Programme. They reviewed NTUNHS's teaching facilities, including its simulation centre, and held discussions with senior Taiwanese academics to finalise the scope of collaboration.
Global Exposure
'This visit represents a significant advancement in our strategic engagement with NTUNHS,' said Professor Strachan. 'We are particularly focused on enhancing academic and research exchange programmes that enrich both faculty expertise and student learning as well as exposure to international health systems outside the Middle East.'
The delegation praised the quality of Taiwan's nursing education and its emphasis on student-centred learning, which they said closely aligns with RCSI Bahrain's approach.
Diplomatic Support
RCSI Bahrain also extended appreciation to H.E. Bob L.J. Chen, Representative of the Taipei Trade Office in Bahrain, and Vice Consul Shadin Lu for facilitating the visit. The institution noted that the partnership supports its mission to equip graduates with the clinical skills and cultural awareness to succeed in a globalised healthcare environment.
Discussions are expected to continue as the two institutions move to activate student and faculty exchanges in the coming academic year.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) - Medical University of Bahrain is proud to announce the installation of its new Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Sewage Treatment Plant, marking a significant milestone in the University's commitment to sustainability and innovative environmental solutions. This advanced, high-capacity facility has been designed to transform wastewater into reusable water, thereby significantly reducing the University's environmental footprint. The MBR Sewage Treatment Plant is capable of processing up to 150 cubic metres (150,000 litres) per day — equivalent to 55,000 cubic metres annually — ensuring it can meet the needs of the campus both now and into the future. The system has been purpose-built to accommodate the anticipated demands of the University's growth, including the forthcoming New Academic Building, by managing future wastewater requirements sustainably. The treated water is efficiently recycled and repurposed specifically for landscape irrigation, conserving potable water resources and supporting the University's green campus initiatives. Underscoring RCSI Medical University of Bahrain's drive to minimise its carbon impact, the new plant operates predominantly on renewable energy from the campus solar farm, as it is fully integrated with the University's solar-powered electricity grid. This synergy between clean energy and water conservation exemplifies the University's holistic approach to environmental stewardship. Intern earns honour for clinical excellence
TDT| Manama RCSI Bahrain has recognised a rising star in the Kingdom's healthcare sector, naming Dr Sharefa Alansari as the recipient of its prestigious 2025 Intern Award. The honour was presented following a comprehensive peer evaluation and reflects Alansari's professionalism, clinical competence, and commitment to patient-centred care. Dr Alansari completed her internship at the Royal Medical Services – Bahrain Defence Force Hospital, where her mentors and colleagues commended her proactive learning approach and attention to detail. Her work during the placement earned high praise across all evaluation areas, including patient interaction and medical decision-making. Celebrating excellence The annual Intern Award is determined through a rigorous Multi-Source Feedback (MSF) process that collects input from consultants, residents, and peers. These assessments are reviewed by the university's Quality Enhancement Office to ensure a balanced and equitable evaluation. Reflecting on her experience, Dr Alansari said the internship environment had helped her grow both professionally and personally. 'My internship provided me with unlimited opportunities to learn,' she said. 'Being given responsibility instilled in me the discipline to be thorough and meticulous with the smallest details concerning each patient I encountered.' She advised future interns to take full advantage of their clinical year. 'Learn as much as possible, explore every opportunity and be as proactive as you possibly can,' she said. University mission RCSI Bahrain held a celebratory event to mark the occasion, attended by senior faculty including Professor Alfred Nicholson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Head of the School of Medicine; Professor Naji Alamuddin, Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the School of Medicine; Dr Nichola McLarnon, Head of Quality and Academic Development; and Ms Sawsan Jahromi, Alumni Coordinator. Professor Nicholson noted that the award winner embodied the values that RCSI seeks to instil in its students. Diabetes mobile unit recognised with Honourable Mention from prestigious global university network
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) – Medical University of Bahrain is pleased to announce that the Diabetes Mobile Unit has received an Honourable Mention from the Talloires Network of Engaged Universities and the MacJannet Foundation in recognition of the outstanding contribution of this initiative to community health engagement and student leadership. The Diabetes Mobile Unit is a long-standing, collaborative initiative between the RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, the Bahrain Diabetes Society and the Rotary Club of Manama, with the valued support of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. It aims at promoting public health in the Kingdom of Bahrain through a multi-sectoral approach encompassing education, research, and community outreach. Launched in 2012, the programme has empowered over 7,700 children from schools affiliated with the Ministry of Education across the Kingdom of Bahrain with improved health literacy, awareness of healthy lifestyle choices and diabetes prevention strategies. It also serves as a dynamic platform for preparing our medical and nursing students as future leaders in health promotion. The MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship, administered by the Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation, celebrates university initiatives that exemplify civic engagement and social responsibility. The Honourable Mention places RCSI Medical University of Bahrain among a select group of global institutions recognised for innovative community initiatives that strengthen the role of higher education in addressing societal challenges.
