Miri parents appeal for RM95,000 to help 22-month-old daughter hear

MIRI (July 29): The parents of 22-month-old Yvonne Paw are urgently appealing to the public to help raise RM95,000 for an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) operation scheduled for Aug 16, 2025 — a life-changing surgery that could allow her to hear for the first time. CT scans at Miri Hospital revealed that Yvonne was born without cochleae in both ears, rendering her profoundly deaf since birth. The operation will be conducted at Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) Kuching, and her family is racing against time to secure the funds needed. She was diagnosed with hearing problems shortly after birth, and her mother Wong Siew Chin and father Paw Keh Chuong are now desperate, placing their hopes in the public's generosity to give their daughter the gift of sound. Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the ABI procedure differs from the more common cochlear implant, as it is meant for patients with absent or damaged cochleae. The estimated cost for Yvonne's operation is RM145,000, of which RM50,000 has already been raised. 'The family has managed to raise RM50,000, but it is still short of RM95,000 with 18 days left to this operation,' he said during a press conference at the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Piasau office on Tuesday. Ting, who is also the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, as well as SUPP Piasau branch chairman and party secretary-general, urged the public to donate through the Miri City Cochlear Implant Society (MCCIS). 'There are only 18 days left as the operation is scheduled to be carried out on Aug 16 this year,' he said. As MCCIS chairman, Ting expressed appreciation to Miri residents for their past generosity, citing the case of Rhea Moh Ning Xuan, a girl who partially regained her hearing after undergoing a successful cochlear implant procedure last year. Ting said Rhea, now one and a half-years-old, underwent surgery on Dec 22, 2024, when she was about one-year-old. Rhea, a previous recipient of a cochlear implant procedure, lies on the shoulder of Ting, who helped kick off the fundraising campaign for her successful operation last year. Her operation was made possible thanks to overwhelming public response to her parents' appeal. Rhea's parents, Moh Nien Chong and Janet Teng, attended Tuesday's press conference in support of the fundraising drive for Yvonne. According to Dr Doris Jong, Rhea is responding well to sounds, especially the 'Happy Birthday' song, and her hearing has improved from profound to moderate loss. She is also beginning to make sounds of her own. Ting made a heartfelt appeal to the public to help Yvonne receive her implant before she turns two, which is a critical milestone for speech and auditory development. 'To those rooting for Yvonne to also hear and eventually learn, please donate to the operation for best results before she reaches the age of two,' he said. All donations will go to a dedicated account for Yvonne's operation. SHAH ALAM: Selangor deputy police chief Deputy Commissioner Mohd Zaini Abu Hassan has assumed the role of acting Selangor police chief. This follows the handover of duties from Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, who was recently promoted to Federal Police Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director, effective July 21. The handover ceremony today was witnessed by Federal Police Management Department director Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid. In his speech, Hussein expressed his gratitude to the leadership and the contingent for their trust and support during his tenure. "I am thankful to Allah for the opportunity to serve as Selangor Police Chief for two years and five months. "I deeply appreciate the confidence given to me to continue my service at Bukit Aman," he said. Hussein reflected on the key achievements during his time in Selangor, including a 12 per cent reduction in crime in 2024 and significant successes in drug enforcement. "In 2023, we seized 5.2 tonnes of drugs worth RM155 million, preventing an estimated 10.56 million dosesfrom reaching the streets. "In 2024, seizures rose to 5.8 tonnes valued at RM145 million, equivalent to 11.55 million doses. "The contingent also arrested 22,000 suspects in 2023 and about 40,000 in 2024, while the Commercial Crime Investigation Department recorded 7,115 cases in 2023 involving losses of RM510 million, and 7,731 cases in 2024 involving losses of RM680 million. "In terms of traffic enforcement, 1.06 million summonses were issued in 2023 with collections amounting to RM135.7 million, and 1.12 million summonses in 2024, generating nearly RM128 million," he said. These achievements, Hussein said, reflect the dedication of the officers, personnel, and civilian staff of the contingent. "Teamwork has been the backbone of our success, and the contingent's commitment to integrity and excellence should continue under Zaini's leadership," he said. The ceremony also saw the handover of the state Police Family Association of Malaysia (Perkep) chairmanship from Datin Liliyana Mohd Harun to its acting chair, Zurim Md Khalid.

Pendang police bust ‘Dika Bayu' cable theft gang

PENDANG: Police have dismantled the 'Dika Bayu' gang, known for stealing telecommunication substation cables, following the arrest of seven men in their 20s across Pendang and Sungai Petani since July 10. Pendang police chief Supt Rodzi Hassan said the first three suspects were caught cutting cables at a substation near Pokok Tai, Bukit Jenun. Further investigations led to the arrest of another suspect at a homestay in Taman Sinar Intan, Sungai Petani, where cable theft tools were seized. 'On July 13, two more gang members were arrested along Jalan Aman Jaya in Sungai Petani, along with a suspected 'fencer' who bought stolen copper,' Rodzi said in a press conference. The gang, all locals, allegedly rented boarding houses and vehicles to conduct thefts, funding their drug habits. 'They used Google Maps to scout substations and disguised themselves with safety gear to avoid suspicion,' Rodzi added. All suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine and have prior theft and drug-related records. They are remanded until July 19 under Section 379 of the Penal Code. Police believe the arrests resolve 22 cable theft cases in Pendang since January, with losses estimated at RM145,000. The gang also operated in Sik, Yan, Alor Setar, and Penaga. - Bernama

Serial cable theft: Gang 'Dika Bayu' busted

PENDANG: Police have busted the 'Dika Bayu' gang, believed to be active on theft of telecommunication cables, after arresting seven men since July 10. Pendang police chief Supt Rodzi Hassan said police first arrested three men when they were spotted climbing and cutting cables at 5.50pm at a substation near Pokok Tai, Bukit Jenun here. He said police were then led to a homestay in Taman Sinar Intan, Sungai Petani and arrested another suspect after an inspection found tools for cable theft. "On July 13, police managed to arrest two more men by the roadside of Jalan Aman Jaya in Sungai Petani who are believed to be members of the same gang and another man suspected as 'fencer' for buying processed copper from the gang," he said in a press conference here on Thursday (July 17). Rodzi said the modus operandi of the group, all locals in their 20s, was to rent boarding houses and use rented cars to carry out the criminal activity to feed their drug habits. "Investigations found that this gang would survey the location of the substation via Google Map and find a way into the substation area. They used safety vests and helmets as disguise to distract the public," he said. He said that all those arrested had records related to theft and drugs. They also tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. "All suspects are now remanded for further investigation until July 19," he said. Rodzi said with the arrests, police are confident of solving 22 cases of theft of telecommunications substation cables in this district since last January until yesterday. He added, apart from Pendang, the suspects admitted to carrying out cable theft in the Sik, Yan, Alor Setar, Sungai Petani and Penaga districts in Penang, which involved losses estimated at RM145,000. — Bernama

Tech exports and project delivery show progress under NIMP

by AUFA MARDHIAH MALAYSIA is seeing strong gains in exports and industrial execution under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), with higher tech exports and faster delivery of approved projects, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). Manufacturing value-added rose 4.1% year-on-year (YoY) in the first quarter (1Q25) to RM95.7 billion, while median wages in the sector increased to RM2,745. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (picture) said the median wage increased by RM145 to RM2,745 compared to RM2,600 in 1Q24 for the manufacturing sector. As part of NIMP's push to boost economic complexity, Malaysia has secured RM52 billion in advanced industry investments so far, with 23,211 potential jobs created and over 4,500 engineers trained. Exports in targeted sectors also saw solid growth between January and May this year. Electrical and electronics (E&E) exports rose 20%, machinery and equipment by 14.6% and medical devices by 7.8%. From 2021 to 1Q25, 86.4% of approved manufacturing projects were implemented — totalling over 3,000 projects — a move Tengku Zafrul said helps small and medium enterprises (SMEs) benefit faster from investment inflows. 'Of the total approved investments, a small number of projects may not proceed due to reasons such as changes in the company's strategic direction, but this accounts for less than 3%,' he said today. Digital investments continue to rise, with RM310.7 billion approved since 2021, mostly in data centres. 'Every ringgit spent on data centres yields a RM6.60 return for the wider economy,' he added. To support exporters, MITI disbursed RM15 million in Market Development Grants in the first half of 2025 (1H25), generating RM2.88 billion in export sales. Focus markets include Latin America, Africa, West Asia and ASEAN. Malaysia also improved its global competitiveness, rising 11 places to 23rd in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking — its best showing since 2020. 'These improvements were driven by strong export growth and market diversification,' Tengku Zafrul said.
