Pendang police bust ‘Dika Bayu' cable theft gang
PENDANG: Police have dismantled the 'Dika Bayu' gang, known for stealing telecommunication substation cables, following the arrest of seven men in their 20s across Pendang and Sungai Petani since July 10. Pendang police chief Supt Rodzi Hassan said the first three suspects were caught cutting cables at a substation near Pokok Tai, Bukit Jenun. Further investigations led to the arrest of another suspect at a homestay in Taman Sinar Intan, Sungai Petani, where cable theft tools were seized. 'On July 13, two more gang members were arrested along Jalan Aman Jaya in Sungai Petani, along with a suspected 'fencer' who bought stolen copper,' Rodzi said in a press conference. The gang, all locals, allegedly rented boarding houses and vehicles to conduct thefts, funding their drug habits. 'They used Google Maps to scout substations and disguised themselves with safety gear to avoid suspicion,' Rodzi added. All suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine and have prior theft and drug-related records. They are remanded until July 19 under Section 379 of the Penal Code. Police believe the arrests resolve 22 cable theft cases in Pendang since January, with losses estimated at RM145,000. The gang also operated in Sik, Yan, Alor Setar, and Penaga. - Bernama

Serial cable theft: Gang 'Dika Bayu' busted
PENDANG: Police have busted the 'Dika Bayu' gang, believed to be active on theft of telecommunication cables, after arresting seven men since July 10. Pendang police chief Supt Rodzi Hassan said police first arrested three men when they were spotted climbing and cutting cables at 5.50pm at a substation near Pokok Tai, Bukit Jenun here. He said police were then led to a homestay in Taman Sinar Intan, Sungai Petani and arrested another suspect after an inspection found tools for cable theft. "On July 13, police managed to arrest two more men by the roadside of Jalan Aman Jaya in Sungai Petani who are believed to be members of the same gang and another man suspected as 'fencer' for buying processed copper from the gang," he said in a press conference here on Thursday (July 17). Rodzi said the modus operandi of the group, all locals in their 20s, was to rent boarding houses and use rented cars to carry out the criminal activity to feed their drug habits. "Investigations found that this gang would survey the location of the substation via Google Map and find a way into the substation area. They used safety vests and helmets as disguise to distract the public," he said. He said that all those arrested had records related to theft and drugs. They also tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. "All suspects are now remanded for further investigation until July 19," he said. Rodzi said with the arrests, police are confident of solving 22 cases of theft of telecommunications substation cables in this district since last January until yesterday. He added, apart from Pendang, the suspects admitted to carrying out cable theft in the Sik, Yan, Alor Setar, Sungai Petani and Penaga districts in Penang, which involved losses estimated at RM145,000. — Bernama

Tech exports and project delivery show progress under NIMP
by AUFA MARDHIAH MALAYSIA is seeing strong gains in exports and industrial execution under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), with higher tech exports and faster delivery of approved projects, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). Manufacturing value-added rose 4.1% year-on-year (YoY) in the first quarter (1Q25) to RM95.7 billion, while median wages in the sector increased to RM2,745. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (picture) said the median wage increased by RM145 to RM2,745 compared to RM2,600 in 1Q24 for the manufacturing sector. As part of NIMP's push to boost economic complexity, Malaysia has secured RM52 billion in advanced industry investments so far, with 23,211 potential jobs created and over 4,500 engineers trained. Exports in targeted sectors also saw solid growth between January and May this year. Electrical and electronics (E&E) exports rose 20%, machinery and equipment by 14.6% and medical devices by 7.8%. From 2021 to 1Q25, 86.4% of approved manufacturing projects were implemented — totalling over 3,000 projects — a move Tengku Zafrul said helps small and medium enterprises (SMEs) benefit faster from investment inflows. 'Of the total approved investments, a small number of projects may not proceed due to reasons such as changes in the company's strategic direction, but this accounts for less than 3%,' he said today. Digital investments continue to rise, with RM310.7 billion approved since 2021, mostly in data centres. 'Every ringgit spent on data centres yields a RM6.60 return for the wider economy,' he added. To support exporters, MITI disbursed RM15 million in Market Development Grants in the first half of 2025 (1H25), generating RM2.88 billion in export sales. Focus markets include Latin America, Africa, West Asia and ASEAN. Malaysia also improved its global competitiveness, rising 11 places to 23rd in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking — its best showing since 2020. 'These improvements were driven by strong export growth and market diversification,' Tengku Zafrul said.

Tracy Chapman revisits debut record; gives vinyl reissue audio uplift
TERMS such as 'classic', 'groundbreaking' and 'evergreen' are often bandied about but in the case of Tracy Chapman's eponymous debut album, all those plaudits and probably more apply. It is with good reason as well. It was truly a phenomenal piece of work which the singer-songwriter struggled to live up to with later albums, conceding she had a lifetime's worth of experiences to draw from for that debut record. It sold six million (physical) copies in the US alone and 20 million worldwide, meaning she never has to work again despite lacklustre sales of her later albums. But what a debut it was. Released in 1988 on the Elektra imprint, the album sold by the truck loads as music lovers everywhere fell head over heels in love with Chapman's impassioned delivery of tunes that told of escaping poverty, domestic strife and hard times. Originally recorded in the span of eight weeks at producer David Kershenbaum's studio – Powertrax – Chapman's songs caught everyone by surprise as it began to dominate radio at a time when glam rock and synth pop ruled the airwaves. This was no Madonna- or Richard Marx-type bubble gum pop. This was serious music – sincere, authentic and exceptionally produced. Though the songs were crafted as solo pieces accompanied just by an acoustic guitar, the producer set about putting together a crack band to bring these fantastic tunes to life. Boy, did these ace musicians, which included bassist Larry Klein and percussionist Paulinho da Costa, flesh out the sound with their contributions. Given the confessional nature of the songs, an unobtrusive sound was required and the assembled musicians really did do justice to these poetic gems. Which brings us to the recently released vinyl reissue, which was a close collaboration between the singer and the original producer. And what a magnificent job they have done. Every instrument on every single track has been elevated to new heights and this is not just pushing up the 'loudness' button. Each is carefully measured and inserted to allow the song to carry its emotional weight without sounding bombastic. Highlights of this exceptional 35th anniversary edition include For My Lover and Baby Can I Hold You. The bass tone on the former is just to die for while the latter is heavenly in its smoothness. Praise alone will not do this 180g vinyl edition justice. The CD version simply pales in comparison. Released on April 4, it has taken some time to reach local music emporiums but it is finally here. Most are retailing it above RM200 but one particular shop in Amcorp Mall, Petaling Jaya – The Groove – has sealed copies going for a very reasonable RM145. Grab it while stocks last as this is pretty much as good as it gets without stepping into silly money audiophile territory.
