Fire and Rescue Department adds 16 new UK-bred K9 dogs this October
Sharifah Mahsinah Abdullah KOTA BARU: The Fire and Rescue Department will strengthen its search and rescue capabilities with the addition of 16 new K9 dogs from the United Kingdom this October, costing RM2.4mil. Its director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said the procurement, each costing RM150,000 inclusive of training, is part of the department's ongoing efforts to enhance operational readiness in critical areas. He said the dogs would be deployed to three key centres: five will be stationed in Sabah, two in Sarawak, while the remaining nine will be based at the K9 unit in Klang Lama, Selangor. "Three officers will be sent to the UK to undergo handler training alongside the dogs. "Once they return, they will be responsible for training other local handlers," he said. Nor Hisham was speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Governance, Integrity, and Anti-Corruption Dialogue Programme here today. He added that the K9 unit is expected to be operational by November, in time to support various national-level search and rescue missions, particularly in disaster-prone regions. "This move will significantly improve our detection and rescue capabilities, especially in difficult terrain and during emergencies involving missing persons or natural disasters," he said. It is learnt that the additional dogs will complement the existing 20 across the country. The dogs include breeds such as the English Springer Spaniel and Labrador Retriever, which are more suited to Malaysia's tropical climate and have more effective specialised functions.

Perlis incurs RM2.4mil loss from coupon parking non-compliance
KANGAR: The Perlis government has incurred a loss of RM2.4mil from non-compliance with the coupon-based parking system, implemented by the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) between 2022 and last year. Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli (pic) said the implementation of the smart parking application system in Perlis this year, with a trial period from May to mid-June, is a positive innovation for the state government and will benefit the people. "The collection from this smart parking system will be returned to the people. "I hope that the people of Perlis will accept this reform, as we are not implementing anything that could harm them,' he told a press conference after chairing the state executive councillor meeting at the State Legislative Assembly Complex here on Wednesday (April 30). Also present was MPK president Affendi Rajini Kanth. Shukri said the charges for using the smart parking system are minimal, at only 60 sen for the first hour. Parking is also free for the first 15 minutes, he added. He added that the smart parking system would be fully managed by an appointed private company, and the state government is expected to earn more than RM1mil annually through its use. Meanwhile, Affendi noted that, from January until now, MPK had not charged any fees to users for parking, resulting in lost revenue of about RM600,000, before the full implementation of the smart application system in mid-June. – Bernama

Fire Dept to get 16 new canine members
SEREMBAN: The Fire and Rescue Department's K9 Dog Detection Unit will receive 16 new canines from the United Kingdom this year, costing RM2.4mil, says Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad. The department director-general said this would complement the existing 20 live assets across the country, further strengthening K9 operations. 'Half of the current dogs are over 12 years, compared to the recommended age range of eight to 10 years. The initial selection process for 20 dogs has already been completed in the UK. 'We will send three of our officers to work alongside trainers there in June. 'They will train them first. From the 20, they will reduce it to 16. If any of the selected puppies are not suitable, they will look for others,' he told reporters after attending the Hari Raya celebration at the state headquarters. Nor Hisham said the sniffer dogs include breeds such as the English Springer Spaniel and Labrador Retriever, which are more suited to Malaysia's tropical climate and have more effective specialised functions. There are four specialised disciplines for K9 dogs: wilderness search and rescue, fire forensics, water cadaver detection and urban search and rescue. 'If there are no obstacles, some of the 16 dogs will be trained in the country. We will conduct internal training with Genting World Bhd for other classes,' he said. Nor Hisham added that 30 new fire engine units, worth RM45mil, will be received in the next six months.
