Fire Dept to get 16 new canine members

The Star22-04-2025

SEREMBAN: The Fire and Rescue Department's K9 Dog Detection Unit will receive 16 new canines from the United Kingdom this year, costing RM2.4mil, says Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad.
The department director-general said this would complement the existing 20 live assets across the country, further strengthening K9 operations.
'Half of the current dogs are over 12 years, compared to the recommended age range of eight to 10 years. The initial selection process for 20 dogs has already been completed in the UK.
'We will send three of our officers to work alongside trainers there in June.
'They will train them first. From the 20, they will reduce it to 16. If any of the selected puppies are not suitable, they will look for others,' he told reporters after attending the Hari Raya celebration at the state headquarters.
Nor Hisham said the sniffer dogs include breeds such as the English Springer Spaniel and Labrador Retriever, which are more suited to Malaysia's tropical climate and have more effective specialised functions.
There are four specialised disciplines for K9 dogs: wilderness search and rescue, fire forensics, water cadaver detection and urban search and rescue.
'If there are no obstacles, some of the 16 dogs will be trained in the country. We will conduct internal training with Genting World Bhd for other classes,' he said.
Nor Hisham added that 30 new fire engine units, worth RM45mil, will be received in the next six months.

MIRI (June 7): Sarawak Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin joined officers and personnel of the General Operations Force (GOF) Battalion 12 here today in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration. In his brief speech, Lee said the annual occasion serves not only as a time for reflection and celebration, but also as an opportunity to acknowledge the dedication and sacrifices of security personnel in ensuring the peace and safety of the people. 'This camp is not unfamiliar to me. Over the years, I have taken part in various activities with GOF personnel and each year I make it a point to contribute in my own way. This is a token of appreciation for their continuous service,' he said. Lee thanked commanding officer Supt Mazlan Mohamed for his cooperation in organising the gathering, adding that such engagements foster stronger bonds between the force and the local community. The Senadin assemblyman also praised the GOF's ongoing commitment to supporting government agencies, particularly during emergencies such as floods or disaster response, highlighting their readiness and dedication. 'The GOF has always been willing to lend a hand whenever the need arises. Their cooperation with other enforcement bodies and agencies reflects true professionalism and responsibility,' he said. The minister also took the opportunity to reflect on Sarawak's long-standing tradition of multicultural harmony, noting how festive seasons are often celebrated across communities regardless of race or religion. 'Whether it is Gawai Dayak, Hari Raya, Chinese New Year or Christmas, Sarawakians always share in the joy together. People of all backgrounds exchange greetings and join in each other's celebrations. This is the uniqueness of Sarawak – a way of life that promotes mutual respect and unity,' he said. He hoped that this spirit of unity would remain strong and serve as an example to other parts of the country. Lee further stressed that national unity and political stability are critical enablers of development and economic progress. 'With unity and stability, we can focus our efforts on advancing Sarawak and improving the wellbeing of our people,' he said. general operations force Hari Raya Aidiladha Lee Kim Shin

Teen missing in Melaka forest while searching for cows found weak but safe after 32 hours

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — A 15-year-old boy with a learning disability who went missing while looking for cattle in a forested area near Kampung Permatang Pasir, Alai, was found safe early this morning after more than 32 hours. According to the New Straits Times, Muhamad Aidil Asyraf Fadli was found lying in the undergrowth behind a house about 600 metres from the Fire and Rescue Department's control post at 2.08am. 'He was given initial treatment by medical personnel at the scene before being handed over to the police for further action,' said Melaka Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mohd Hafidzatullah Rashid. He said the victim was found in a weak state and unable to move, and the search and rescue (SAR) operation was officially called off at 3.52am. The operation had earlier been suspended at 7pm yesterday after a search over a 2.4-hectare area yielded no leads. A total of 31 personnel were involved in the SAR effort, including 14 members from the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM), five policemen and four Civil Defence Force personnel. Villagers also assisted in the search, along with three sniffer dogs — two from the Fire and Rescue Department and one from the police. 'The operation was divided into four sectors and expanded to include riverbanks, with aerial monitoring conducted using a Fire and Rescue Department drone,' said Hafidzatullah. He added that SAR teams also drained two artificial ponds during the search. Meanwhile, Melaka Tengah deputy police chief Superintendent Halim Abas confirmed that Muhamad Aidil is currently receiving treatment at the Emergency Department of Melaka Hospital and is in stable condition.
