Kunlavut to become first Thai men's singles world No.1
KUALA LUMPUR: Kunlavut Vitidsarn will become the first Thai men's singles player to reach the world No. 1 spot following his emphatic win at the Singapore Open on Sunday. The 24-year-old reigning world champion crushed China's world No. 15 Lu Guang Zu 21-6, 21-10 in just 37 minutes to capture his fourth title of the year. "I'm having a great run this season, and to be the new world No. 1 is an honour," said Kunlavut. Currently ranked No. 2, Kunlavut has amassed 97,179 points — enough to leapfrog China's Shi Yu Qi (95,117), who dropped significant points after failing to defend his Super 750 crown. The Singapore win earned Kunlavut US$70,000 (RM297,970), while runner-up Lu Guang Zu pocketed US$34,000 (RM144,729). Kunlavut's rise has been nothing short of spectacular. The Chonburi-born shuttler was a three-time world junior champion before becoming Thailand's first men's singles world champion in 2023 and clinching Olympic silver in Paris last year. This season, Kunlavut has claimed titles at the Indonesia Masters, Badminton Asia Championships and the Thailand Open — and now adds the Singapore Open to his growing collection, taking his career tally to seven. Given his red-hot form, Kunlavut is widely tipped to win his first Super 1000 title at the Indonesia Open, which begins in Jakarta on Tuesday. The new world rankings will be released on Tuesday.

Amazon-owned Blink debuts doorbell cam with wider view, person detection
The full line-up of Blink devices. — Amazon Blink, the Inc-owned hardware brand known for its connected doorbells and video cameras, introduced new devices on May 29, the latest entries in a saturated market for smart-home gadgets. Compared with its predecessor, the newest Blink Video Doorbell provides a more expansive 150˚ "head-to-toe' field of view that should give a fuller preview of guests and package deliveries, according to the company. The device runs on three standard AA batteries and is rated for as much as two years of battery life, it added. The camera is available today for US$70 (RM297) in black or white. Also new to the Video Doorbell is computer vision-enabled person detection, letting those with a Blink subscription receive notifications when people are captured by the camera. The notification system is designed to ignore movements from animals or objects, the company said. Compared with its predecessor, the newest Blink Video Doorbell provides a more expansive 150˚ 'head-to-toe' field of view that should give a fuller preview of guests and package deliveries, according to the company. — Amazon Amazon continues to separately operate both Blink and Ring, another brand known for its smart-home cameras, despite significant overlap in their products and services. Ring's devices tend to be priced slightly higher, however, giving Amazon a two-pronged strategy in a competitive category as it faces challengers like Arlo Technologies Inc, Roku Inc and Eufy, which is owned by Anker Innovations Technology Co. Aside from price, the long battery life on Blink's cameras is another potential differentiator. Blink's basic plan covers a single camera and costs US$3 (RM13) per month or US$30 (RM127) annually; the "Plus' tier extends that to unlimited devices for US$10 (RM42) a month or US$100 (RM424) per year. The subscription is required for features such as motion event recording, 90-minute live views of the camera feed, unlimited cloud storage, automatic local backup and person detection. Other Blink cameras already support the latter, but it's new to the video doorbell. The company on Thursday also introduced a redesigned Sync Module Core that serves as a hub for as many as 10 Blink-branded devices and is compatible with Amazon's Alexa smart-home platform, including its popular Echo speakers. – Bloomberg

Penang police seize RM6.3mil worth of MDMA in car drug bust, 6 detained
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have disrupted a drug syndicate operating in George Town after uncovering 37.8kg of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) stored in a car, part of a haul valued at RM6.3 million. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the drugs seized could have reached up to 80,000 users. Six local men, aged between 33 and 41, were detained in raids carried out between 2pm on Tuesday and 4.30am today. The operation began with the detention of one suspect, which led officers to a parked vehicle used to store the drug. "A search of the vehicle revealed two fabric bags containing 532 packets of purple and gold MDMA powder weighing 18.42kg. "Five cardboard boxes in the same car held an additional 777 multi-coloured packets weighing 19.38kg," he said at a press conference at the Seberang Perai Tengah district police headquarters today. Police also found packaging materials, including paper and plastic bags, believed to have been used for mailing or distributing the drugs. The first arrest led policemen to five more suspects around George Town. All six are unemployed and believed to be part of a syndicate active since the beginning of the year. Urine tests showed one suspect was positive for benzodiazepines, while four others tested positive for ketamine. Background checks revealed one of the men had a criminal record involving 16 thefts, while four others had prior convictions related to drugs or other offences. Authorities also seized seven cars worth RM297,000, jewellery valued at RM1,500, and RM2,550 in cash, bringing the total value of seizures to RM6.6 million. Hamzah said police are investigating potential links between the group and a separate drug bust last week, in which a man was found with multiple substances, including MDMA, worth RM2.1 million. The suspects have been remanded for seven days until May 27. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
