Keeping media standards high

Yong says the sponsorship will also be spent on upskill training for media personnel, the corporate sector and government agencies. A total of 548 entries have been received from media practitioners vying for recognition in Malaysia's journalism awards. Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) said there were a total of 60 entries more than the previous year. Fifty-eight media organisations from all over the country, including Sabah and Sarawak, are participating in MPI-PETRONAS Malaysian Journalism Awards 2024, which will be held in conjunction with a media night in Kuala Lumpur on June 20. MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail said the event had garnered up to RM1.25mil in sponsorship, with PETRONAS putting in RM450,000 as the main sponsor for award night prizes. The media practitioners are competing in both traditional and emerging media formats, comprising 21 categories including environmental, social and governance (ESG) journalism, radio broadcasting, podcasting, video documentary work, live streaming, and investigative reporting. For the media night, MPI collaborated with Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and received RM799,500 in sponsorship from 51 organisations, including corporate entities, ministries, government agencies, and media organisations. 'The total amount of sponsorships is 15% more than last year,' Ainol Amriz said during a sponsors appreciation event in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. 'The number of organisations has also increased, from only 22 last year. 'The increase is a sign of confidence in MPI,' he added. A town hall on how corporations, government agencies, and sponsors could obtain opportunities for coverage in the media was also held during the event attended by 130 representatives of 41 organisations. MPI president Datuk Yong Soo Heong, in a press conference after the event, said sponsorship for the awards had several main selling points. 'One is to be able to attend a function where the best in Malaysian media will be in the same room. 'Sponsors will be able to mingle with the editors, chief editors and reporters to get to know how they work. 'They can improve their ways when it comes to interacting with the media to achieve higher visibility. 'It is also a prestigious event. This year, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof will be attending the event,' he said. Yong said the money received from sponsors would also go towards upskill training, not only for journalists but also those working in corporate and government agencies. 'What you see today is not just a form of contribution and encouragement. 'It is also a sign of lasting friendship which has taken time to build,' said Yong, adding that MPI had been receiving support for its awards night for the past 45 years. Some 1,000 guests are expected to attend the awards night. To mark the occasion, a coffee-table book detailing the generosity of its major sponsors and featuring the work of former journalists will be one of the souvenirs.

MCMC removed over 32,000 online scam content in 1Q 2025 -Teo

KULAI: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has removed a staggering 32,436 pieces of online content related to scams between January and April this year, involving losses nearing RM800 million. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching expressed concern over this trend, as the content taken down in the first four months of 2025 was almost half the total removed throughout 2024, which stood at 63,652 items. 'From January to April alone, the content taken down reached 32,436. This means in just four months, we've dealt with almost half the volume of what we took down last year. These figures are deeply worrying.' 'According to data from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the financial losses inflicted by online scams have reached RM799 million, almost RM800 million. 'A significant portion of these scams involved fictitious investments, therefore, we urgently need to intensify our efforts to educate the public,' said Teo at a press conference following the launch of the 'Nadi Aspirasi Nasional bersama Anak Muda' (NANBA) programme in Taman Mewah, here today. Also present at the event were Community Communications Department (J-KOM) deputy director-general (community communications) Suwadi Guliling and the Senai assemblyman Wong Bor Yang. Teo highlighted that the MCMC had initiated the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) and had begun implementing cyber awareness programmes in schools across the nation. To date, nine schools have participated in the KIS programme, including two in Kulai, namely SJKC Kulai Besar and SK Felda Bukit Permai. 'Our aim is to extend this programme to secondary schools and public universities. We also urge schools and educational institutions to collaborate with us in supporting online safety education initiatives,' she said. Regarding the NANBA programme introduced by J-KOM, the Kulai MP said that the initiative served as a vital platform to strengthen ties between the government and the Indian community, particularly its youth. She elaborated that NANBA this year focused on empowering the Indian community through various programmes and the dissemination of information regarding government policies. Kulai district is the first location for the NANBA programme, with plans for expansion to areas with significant Indian communities, such as Perak, Selangor, and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. 'The organisation of NANBA fosters strong cooperation between the people and the government, in addition to strengthening communication networks with Indian youth. 'Through this programme, the youth are given exposure to current and upcoming policies and initiatives of the MADANI government, while also encouraging active participation in national development,' she said. The NANBA programme in Kulai featured various activities, including the Rahmah Sale, exhibitions from government and private agencies, and colouring and poster drawing competitions, which attracted a strong turnout from the local community.

Communications Ministry ramps up online safety campaign amid RM800 million scam losses

JOHOR BARU: The Communications Ministry will ramp up its online safety campaign following a surge in scams involving non-existent investments, which have cost Malaysians a staggering RM800 million as of last month." Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the campaign would be expanded to rural areas, as well as primary schools, secondary schools, and institutions of higher learning (IPTs). She said the ministry was taking the matter seriously due to the significant financial losses suffered by the public. "According to police data, as of last month, losses from online scams have reached RM799 million. "A large portion of these scams involve non-existent investment schemes. This issue is very serious. "As such, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will train more facilitators to roll out the Safe Internet Campaign to more primary and secondary schools, IPTs, and rural areas," she said. She was speaking at a press conference after officiating the Kita Madani Carnival X Johor State Madani Rakyat Programme 2025 here today. Previously, it was reported that the campaign would be implemented in more national-type primary schools and public universities nationwide by the end of this year. Nie Ching had earlier said that the campaign had so far been successfully carried out in nine primary schools. She added that the campaign needs to be carried out more aggressively to educate the younger generation about a safer and more controlled online environment. "For primary schools, the focus will be on cyberbullying, while for secondary schools, the approach will centre on protecting personal privacy. "In addition, secondary schools and IPTs will focus on the use of artificial intelligence to prevent its misuse, including the dangers of 'deepfake' technology. "For adults, we aim to educate them to be more cautious and not easily fall for get-rich-quick schemes or non-existent online investments," she said.
