Penampang upgrade in full swing: Ewon
Published on: Thursday, May 22, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 22, 2025 By: Lorena Binisol Text Size: Ewon officiating the Penampang district-level Kaamatan festival. PENAMPANG: Twenty one public buildings in the district have been identified to be gazetted as Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) to accommodate victims during flood. Penampang Member of Parliament Datuk Ewon Benedick said the initiative follows efforts to improve flood disaster management after the district experienced severe floods last year. 'Previously, Penampang only had one PPS. This is no longer practical, especially for villagers living in remote areas such as Kampung Sugud and Kampung Kolopis who had to be relocated to the Penampang Cultural Centre during floods. 'We have identified 21 suitable public buildings which will be gazetted as PPS to facilitate evacuation and rescue operations,' he said when officiating the district-level Kaamatan Festival celebration on Sunday. Ewon, who is also Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister said several high-impact development projects have been implemented or are ongoing in Penampang since 2023. These include flood mitigation works in Donggongon, upgrading of the main drainage system, improvement of the Terian-Buayan Road, construction of the Donggongon Tamu, a new bridge in Babagon, and land surveying in Kampung Togudon under the Pantas Programme. Advertisement 'The long-delayed construction of the Donggongon Tamu finally began last month, following a site visit and discussions with the Director-General of the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), Prime Minister's Department, in January 2023. 'Issues related to land ownership on hillside areas such as in Kampung Togudon have also been resolved through the Pantas Programme,' he said. Ewon also announced that the Penampang District Council was upgraded to a Municipal Council last year. Under his ministry, several agencies have expanded their presence to Penampang, including the upgraded Bank Rakyat Penampang branch, Tekun Nasional, INSKEN Sabah, SME Corp Sabah, as well as the MSME Hub and TikTok Shop Live Hub Studio. 'New initiatives such as the BEEP Plus Grant, Tamu Entrepreneur Financing Scheme, Rural Tamu Premises Project, Sejati Madani Cooperative Programme and the Tunas Usahawan Belia (TUBE) programme have also benefitted entrepreneurs and cooperatives in the district,' he said. Ewon added that Penampang must formulate a comprehensive development plan to be included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) for the 2026–2030 period. 'The Penampang Development Master Plan launched last year was a key reference document for the Federal Government, State Government and relevant ministries in planning the implementation of RMK-13,' he said. He also expressed appreciation to all parties contributing to Penampang's development and hoped the Kaamatan Festival celebration will continue to be a platform for unity. 'Unity, cooperation and solidarity are vital to ensuring a progressive future for Penampang,' he said. Meanwhile, Sletcher Myranda Floyd was crowned Unduk Ngadau Penampang 2025 after emerging victorious among 14 contestants at the event. Her win earns her a place in the grand finale of the state-level Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan competition, scheduled for 30 May. Sletcher also took home the Tati Topiodo title, awarded for best personality and presentation, along with RM7,000 in cash, a trophy and a bouquet. The first runner-up was Carrie Terence, who received RM3,000, while Dorna Mayra Michael came in third place and who also secured the title Tati Tosuau, for grace and elegance and received RM2,000. Both runners-up also received trophies and bouquets. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Premier urges more Sarawak contractors to register as facility management providers

Speaking at the launch of International Construction Week (ICW) Borneo at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday, he said the move is part of the state's holistic sustainability strategy. 'Sustainability does not end when the last brick is laid. It must continue throughout a building's life cycle. 'This is why the Sarawak government is championing professional facility management to ensure safety, efficiency, and longevity of our assets,' he said. Abang Johari noted that over 4,000 government quarters have already been built in Sarawak, with 3,000 more underway, making effective FM crucial. 'Currently, out of over 468 FM contractors in Malaysia, only 17 are registered in Sarawak. That is far from adequate,' he said. He said Works Department (JKR) Sarawak pioneered its first official FM contract in 2024 for the Borneo Cultures Museum, which will set a benchmark for future FM contracts under RMK-13. These include the State Legislative Assembly Complex, Integrated Administrative Centres in Bintulu, Limbang, and Lawas, as well as Federal Gunasama Quarters in Bintulu. He also welcomed CIDB's initiative to organise a dedicated FM seminar and training as a follow-up to ICW Borneo. 'We want to develop what we call gunasama (shared use), where we will build housing for our officers in a sort of gated community. 'For example, it will be used by both state and federal officers. We have many doctors in the districts. We have to provide good quarters for the doctors,' Abang Johari added. He said the quarters would include condominiums or apartments with all the basic facilities.

PKR election body refutes Rafizi's claims of ignored complaints
Minister of Economy Rafizi Ramli talking to the press after the series of management and group-focussed sessions throughout Malaysia on the 13th Malaysian Project (RMK-13) known as "MADANI Mendengar," at Setia SPICE Convention Centre in Penang. (December 11, 2024) — ZHAFARAN NASIB/The Star. SHAH ALAM: PKR has refuted claims by party deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli that complaints and objections related to its elections were ignored. The party's central election committee (JPP) deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Kasim said these allegations are untrue. He said every complaint and objection received is taken seriously and handled professionally, fairly and according to regulations. 'The membership list used is the latest received from the secretary-general's office, verified through the electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) process, before being updated as the official voter list. 'Claims that the JPP ignored complaints and objections are untrue and regrettable,' he said in a statement on Sunday. Rafizi had earlier claimed that the JPP had failed to carry out its duties when individuals allegedly joined PKR temporarily for the election period, allowing them to vote and contest in recent branch elections. He also claimed that the JPP had failed to check the membership status of individuals from other parties, allowing those from parties like Umno and Pejuang to contest and win branch positions. To this, Ahmad said party election regulations were approved by the central leadership council (MPP) on Feb 23 and confirmed by the party's political bureau on March 3. He pointed out that Rafizi was a member in the two decision-making bodies. 'The regulations clearly state that every objection or appeal must be accompanied by sufficient evidence, and the burden of proof lies with the person lodging the objection or appeal. 'A total of 289 complaints and objections were received, covering various stages of the process including nominations, objections to nominations, appeals, finalising candidate lists, campaigns and voting processes. 'All these complaints have been thoroughly examined, with some referred to the secretary-general's office and the party disciplinary board for further action as per their jurisdiction,' he said. He added that the JPP also reviewed objections to voting results after the branch elections and presented them in the MPP meeting. 'The MPP has made decisions for six selected branches along with the international auditors appointed by the MPP to represent all issues related to branch voting results raised. 'The international auditor's report shared by Rafizi proves that the e-voting system is in good condition, secure, and there is no evidence of manipulation or fraud,' Ahmad said.

Pahang to reclaim encroached land using full extent of law, says MB
KUANTAN, April 24 — The Pahang government will fully enforce existing legal provisions to reclaim every inch of state land that has been illegally encroached, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail. He stressed that land encroachment is a criminal offence and the state will not compromise with any party attempting to illegally occupy government land. 'Such actions not only violate the law but also undermine the sovereignty and dignity of the state administration. We will not yield to any pressure, threats, or tactics from irresponsible individuals or groups. 'I issue a stern warning — do not challenge the resolve of the state government. Together with enforcement agencies, we will intensify monitoring operations, law enforcement, and legal actions. He said this when winding up debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address during the State Legislative Assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang here today. Earlier, the Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had called for an end to illegal land encroachments in the state, revealing that 14,494.9 hectares of government land had been unlawfully occupied and cultivated with oil palm, rubber, durian, and other produce. Wan Rosdy said since the establishment of the Pahang State Enforcement Unit (UPNP) in 2019, a total of 23 anti-land encroachment operations had been carried out over 1,362 hectares, with five more planned for this year. He also revealed that the state had submitted 11 high-impact project proposals for consideration under the First Rolling Plan of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) in 2026. These included the construction of the Lingkaran Tengah Utara linking Raub to Slim River in Perak (RM3.936 billion), upgrading of Jalan Kuantan–Segamat, Rompin Phase 2 (RM1.331 billion), and construction of the Central Spine Road (CSR) Package 6 from Karak to Simpang Pelangai, Bentong (RM750 million). To date, 114 of the 217 water supply development projects in Pahang have been completed, 32 are under construction, and 71 are in the pre-construction phase, he said. Starting this year, Pengurusan Air Pahang Berhad (PAIP) will undertake pipe replacement works totalling 713.2 kilometres, funded with RM205 million from the Federal Government and RM134.6 million via a loan from Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB). — Bernama

RM50 million religious school for Sandakan
Published on: Wednesday, April 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Apr 23, 2025 By: jozie John Text Size: Arifin further stated that once established, the school's curriculum would be aligned with that of Al-Azhar University, following the model adopted by other state religious secondary schools. Kota Kinabalu: A Sekolah Menengah Agama Negeri (SMAN) is set to be built in Sandakan at an estimated cost of RM50 million. Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, said the state government made the proposal through Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains). 'The proposal has been included as one of the development projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) and the school is to be built within the Batu 10 education hub area in Sungai Batang, Sandakan,' he said. Arifin, who also serves as the state's Education Exco, noted that the Sandakan division currently has 10 Sekolah Agama Negeri (SAN) with a total enrolment of 1,484 students. 'In view of this, establishing a SMAN is crucial to accommodate SAN students wishing to pursue secondary-level religious education in the same stream,' he said. He was responding to a question raised by Datuk Jaffari Waliam (Nominated Assemblyman) on whether the State Government planned to build a SMAN in Sandakan. Arifin further stated that once established, the school's curriculum would be aligned with that of Al-Azhar University, following the model adopted by other state religious secondary schools. 'The curriculum will cover areas such as Usuluddin, Syariah, Ulum Syariah, Lughah Arabiah, and Arabic literature,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
