Delhi Police nab man who snatched Lok Sabha MP's chain, recover jewellery and scooter
The Delhi Police, early on Wednesday, arrested a man who had allegedly snatched the gold chain of Lok Sabha MP R Sudha during her morning walk on the streets of the high-security Chanakyapuri area of Lutyens' Delhi two days ago. According to the police, the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of the Delhi Police nabbed the accused, identified as Sohan Rawat, from near his house in the Okhla area of South East Delhi. The police said Rawat has 26 criminal cases previously registered in his name, and was released from jail on July 27. 'The stolen scooter that he used for the crime, the MP's gold chain weighing 30.90 grams, four mobile phones suspected to be stolen, and the suspect's clothes at the time of the incident have been recovered,' said a police officer. CCTV footage revealed that the accused was wearing a colourful full-sleeve T-shirt and a helmet, and riding a black scooter at a very high speed, before and after he targeted the MP. He was later seen fleeing towards South Delhi's Moti Bagh area. The Delhi Police had mobilised 24 teams from various units, including the New Delhi district police, Crime Branch, Special Cell, and Special Staff, to nab the accused, the officer added. In the past two days, the Delhi Police scanned over 1,500 CCTV cameras, including 900 installed around embassies and in the vicinity of the incident, and questioned over 200 people, with a focus on those with prior criminal records, as well as snatchers recently released from jail or out on bail, said a source. They also conducted searches in more than 25 localities in Chanakyapuri, Sarojini Nagar, and R K Puram. Sudha reported that her gold chain was allegedly snatched near the Polish embassy early on Monday. The Tamil Nadu Congress MP later wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying the incident was shocking, highlighting that the area is considered a 'high-security zone'. The MP alleged that she suffered injuries to her neck and that her clothes were torn during the incident.

Habitual offender out on bail held for snatching Lok Sabha member Sudha's chain
A habitual offender out on bail facing 26 cases has been arrested for snatching Lok Sabha member R Sudha's chain during a morning walk on Monday near the Polish embassy in New Delhi's high-security diplomatic enclave Chanakyapuri, a police officer said on Wednesday Congress lawmaker R Sudha at Parliament after the snatching on Monday. (ANI) The accused, Sohan Rawat, a resident of Okhla Industrial Area's Harkesh Nagar, was released on bail on June 26. 'The cases against him are registered in Hauz Khas, Kalkaji, Sunlight Colony, Maar Colony, RK Puram, Naraina, Saket, etc,' said the officer. The chain, the scooter used in the crime, another stolen two-wheeler, four mobile phones, the clothes, and the helmet he wore during the stanching have been recovered from Rawat. The police officer said Rawat was arrested in South Delhi after he was captured on CCTV riding in Moti Bagh after the snatching. Sudha, who suffered injuries on her neck, and her clothes were also torn in the incident, was walking with Rajya Sabha member R Rajathi when the accused, wearing a full-face helmet, approached them from the opposite direction. 'He was riding slowly, so I did not suspect anything. But as he passed, he suddenly pulled my gold chain with force. I somehow managed not to fall. My neck is injured and my clothes were torn in the process,' she said. Sudha, who represents Tamil Nadu's Mayiladuthurai constituency, said they tried to raise the alarm, but no passersby came to their aid. The theft raised questions about security in the diplomatic zone housing embassies, residences of diplomats, and key installations in one of the most secure areas. Sudha questioned how safe women are in the capital. Sudha asked if they cannot walk safely in a high-priority zone in the national capital, where else could they feel safe and follow their routine without fearing for their limbs, lives, and valuables? 'In a high-security zone like Chanakyapuri, which is full of embassies and protected institutions, [it] is highly shocking to say the least,' said the Opposition Congress lawmaker in her police complaint.

MP chain snatching case: Over 1,500 CCTV cameras scanned, 200 quizzed but police yet trace suspect, scooter
A man in his early 20s, wearing a colourful full sleeve T-shirt and a helmet, is seen riding a black Suzuki 125 scooter in CCTV camera footage. This was just after he allegedly snatched a gold chain from Congress MP R Sudha, while she was on a morning walk on the streets of Chanakyapuri in the high-security Lutyens' Delhi on Monday. The suspect, who was seen driving at a very high speed both before and after he targeted the MP, then flees towards South Delhi's Moti Bagh. Police suspect he came from the same direction before he committed the crime. According to sources, the Delhi Police has so far scanned over 1,500 CCTV cameras – including 900 installed around embassies and areas near the incident spot – to identify the suspect. Police teams have also searched over 25 localities, including jhuggi jhopri clusters at Chanakyapuri, Sarojini Nagar, and R K Puram. But to no avail. A source said the CCTV camera footage is not clear enough to identify his face and the scooter's registration number. The police are taking the help of a face recognition system and other technical tools to identify the accused and the vehicle registration number, the source added. A senior officer said 24 teams from the New Delhi district police, Crime Branch, Special Cell, and Special Staff are working to apprehend the accused. According to CCTV footage, as soon as the suspect crossed the railway bridge while coming from Moti Bagh, he took the Flag Pole roundabout from Shantipath and turned onto Niti Marg, where gates 3 and 4 of the Poland Embassy are located. There, he allegedly spotted Sudha and Rajya Sabha MP Rajathi Salma walking along the roadside, snatched Sudha's gold chain, and sped away on his scooter. Over 200 people, including many with previous criminal records, as well as snatchers recently released from jail or out on bail, have been questioned, said police. Police said that Chanakyapuri, home to several embassies and high commissions, has 20 'bad characters' on record at the local police station, with the majority known to be involved in bootlegging and thefts. Five of them are currently active, said an officer. Hours after the incident, the district police chief had directed all police stations in New Delhi district to conduct early morning patrols and picket checks in Chanakyapuri and nearby areas, another officer added. Earlier this year, a similar snatching incident had taken place in Chanakyapuri, which was cracked by the police within a few hours. 'The accused, who was on a scooter, had chased a woman pillion rider on another scooter and snatched her chain. The accused was arrested from Sarojini Nagar and the chain was also recovered,' a source said.
