MP chain snatching case: Over 1,500 CCTV cameras scanned, 200 quizzed but police yet trace suspect, scooter
The suspect, who was seen driving at a very high speed both before and after he targeted the MP, then flees towards South Delhi's Moti Bagh. Police suspect he came from the same direction before he committed the crime.
According to sources, the Delhi Police has so far scanned over 1,500 CCTV cameras – including 900 installed around embassies and areas near the incident spot – to identify the suspect. Police teams have also searched over 25 localities, including jhuggi jhopri clusters at Chanakyapuri, Sarojini Nagar, and R K Puram. But to no avail.
A source said the CCTV camera footage is not clear enough to identify his face and the scooter's registration number. The police are taking the help of a face recognition system and other technical tools to identify the accused and the vehicle registration number, the source added.
A senior officer said 24 teams from the New Delhi district police, Crime Branch, Special Cell, and Special Staff are working to apprehend the accused.
According to CCTV footage, as soon as the suspect crossed the railway bridge while coming from Moti Bagh, he took the Flag Pole roundabout from Shantipath and turned onto Niti Marg, where gates 3 and 4 of the Poland Embassy are located. There, he allegedly spotted Sudha and Rajya Sabha MP Rajathi Salma walking along the roadside, snatched Sudha's gold chain, and sped away on his scooter.
Over 200 people, including many with previous criminal records, as well as snatchers recently released from jail or out on bail, have been questioned, said police.
Police said that Chanakyapuri, home to several embassies and high commissions, has 20 'bad characters' on record at the local police station, with the majority known to be involved in bootlegging and thefts. Five of them are currently active, said an officer.
Hours after the incident, the district police chief had directed all police stations in New Delhi district to conduct early morning patrols and picket checks in Chanakyapuri and nearby areas, another officer added.
Earlier this year, a similar snatching incident had taken place in Chanakyapuri, which was cracked by the police within a few hours. 'The accused, who was on a scooter, had chased a woman pillion rider on another scooter and snatched her chain. The accused was arrested from Sarojini Nagar and the chain was also recovered,' a source said.

‘Considering it': Donald Trump on ‘federal takeover' of Washington DC
President Donald Trump on Wednesday mused again about the possibility of taking federal control of the US capital Washington, including by using soldiers, to counter what he falsely suggested was rising crime in the city. US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, US, on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025.(Bloomberg) Under a more-than 50-year agreement, governance of Washington rests with the locally elected government of the District of Columbia -- including its mayor -- with Congress having an oversight role. Trump has long chafed at that arrangement and has repeatedly suggested he would like to federalize the city, giving the White House the final say in how it is run. "We're considering it, yeah, because the crime is ridiculous," he told reporters in response to a question about whether he should be in charge of the city's police force. "We want to have a great safe capital -- and we're going to have it. "The rate of crime, the rate of muggings, killings and everything else; we're not going to let it -- and that includes bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly too," he said. The comments come a day after the billionaire president took to his social media platform to threaten city leaders. "If DC doesn't get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run," he wrote. Violent crime in Democratic-controlled Washington fell in the first half of 2025 by 26 percent compared with a year earlier, police statistics show. The city's crime rates in 2024 were already their lowest in three decades, according to figures produced by the Justice Department before Trump took office. Trump's threat to send the National Guard into the capital comes weeks after he deployed California's military reserve force into Los Angeles to quell protests over immigration raids, despite objections from local leaders and law enforcement. The president has frequently mused about using the military to control America's cities, many of which are under Democratic control and hostile to his nationalist impulses. On Wednesday Washington's non-voting congressional delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton, rejected Trump's claim that violent crime was rising, and his threat to federalize the capital. "Presidents have no authority to unilaterally take control of DC. Congress would have to pass a law, and I won't let the current effort get that far," she said on X.

Govt removed LS question on mine auction, claims Cong MP
NEW DELHI: A controversy erupted on Wednesday after Congress MP KC Venugopal accused govt of removing a Lok Sabha question on the auction of 13 offshore mining blocks around Arabian and Andaman seas at the last minute, alleging it wanted to evade answering whether the socio-economic impact assessment (SIA) was done prior to the auction, which would have exposed its "dubious mining policy". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Terming it "procedural manipulation" by the Centre, he said the question, listed by BJP MPs Balabhadra Majhi and Aparajita Sarangi, was the first starred one for question hour on Wednesday. It asked govt to name shortlisted candidates for 13 mining blocks, the number of fishing villages within 20 nautical miles and whether SIA was done for each. The MP said govt had uploaded the question in the public domain but it "miraculously vanished" ahead of proceedings. He said, "What forced this abrupt deletion? Who is govt trying to protect? Was it because govt's dubious offshore mining policy was about to be exposed...?" tnn

Girl sets self ‘ablaze', dad blames cop inaction against ex-BF for her death
Kendrapada: A 20-year-old college student in the district allegedly set herself on fire on Wednesday after her former boyfriend (24) apparently threatened to leak their intimate photos and videos on social media following their breakup. The girl, a final-year political science student, was found dead at home by her father (60), who has blamed police inaction for the tragedy. According to him, when they tried to file a complaint against the former boyfriend, police officers advised them to block his number rather than taking action against him. "Around six months back, my daughter and I had gone to Pattamundai (rural) police station to lodge an FIR against her ex-boyfriend as he had threatened to leak her private photos and videos on social media platforms. But police officers did not take necessary steps to file a case and advised us to block his mobile number instead. Due to gross negligence of the police, my daughter was forced to end her life," the girl's father alleged. He also claimed that his daughter had been living in fear for six months due to threats from her former boyfriend, with whom she had been in a relationship for two years. The incident comes days after a college student in Balasore set herself on fire over alleged sexual harassment by her department head and supposed inaction by the college authorities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo Since that incident on July 12, Odisha has witnessed at least four such self-immolation cases. In response to the father's allegation, superintendent of police Siddharth Kataria assured a thorough and impartial investigation. "Every aspect of the incident will be thoroughly probed, and whosoever is found guilty will face action as per law," Kataria said. He emphasized that police personnel would be held accountable if it is found they have been negligent. A forensic team has been deployed to gather evidence, and a case has been filed under Sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of BNS. However, no arrests have been made yet. Opposition leaders from BJD, Congress and Left parties criticised the police for their handling of the case and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused boyfriend. Two platoons of police have been deployed in the village to maintain law and order as investigation continues. The girl's body has been sent for autopsy, with authorities awaiting the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death.
