27 inmates from notorious Iranian prison still at large after Israeli strike: Tehran
Print Close By Rachel Wolf Published July 22, 2025 Iranian media reported that 27 inmates from the notorious Evin Prison remain at large following an Israeli airstrike last month. After Israel's strike during the 12-day war, 75 inmates escaped from Evin prison, according to the Associated Press, which cited a news website affiliated with Iran's judiciary. In the article, Iranian Judiciary Spokesperson Asghar Jahangir said that out of the 75 escapees, 48 were either recaptured or returned voluntarily, the Associated Press added. Jahangir also stated that the escapees had been serving time for minor offenses. IRAN CLAIMS ITS PRESIDENT WAS INJURED IN ISRAELI AIRSTRIKE LAST MONTH In June, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, which was aimed at destroying Iran's nuclear capabilities. While Iranian officials said 71 were killed in the strike, local media reported that there were 80 killed, including staff, soldiers, inmates and visiting family members, according to the Associated Press. Sayeh Seydal, a jailed Iranian dissident who survived Israel's strike on Evin Prison, told relatives that being in the facility was a "slow death," according to the Associated Press, which obtained a recording of the conversation. "The bombing by the U.S. and Israel didn't kill us. Then the Islamic Republic brought us to a place that will practically kill us," Seydal said. On Tuesday, Amnesty International called for an investigation of Israel's strike on the prison as a possible war crime, saying it constituted "a serious violation of international humanitarian law." IRAN ACKNOWLEDGES DEATH TOLL FROM ISRAEL'S STRIKE ON NOTORIOUS EVIN PRISON Erika Guevara Rosas, who serves as Amnesty International's Senior Director for research, advocacy, policy and campaigns, said "the evidence establishes reasonable grounds to believe that the Israeli military brazenly and deliberately attacked civilian buildings." Evin Prison is infamous for its harsh conditions and became a place for Iranian officials to throw protesters. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP In 2022, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Iranian officials and entities responsible for a crackdown on protesters, including Evin Prison warden Hedayat Farzadi, who was known for his brutal tactics. The department said that protesters thrown in Evin Prison under Farzadi's watch were subjected to torture and physical abuse. Print Close URL

Israel strikes Syria's military headquarters as the regime clashes with Druze civilians
Print Close By Rachel Wolf Published July 16, 2025 Israel announced on Wednesday that its forces struck near the entrance of the Syrian Defense Ministry's headquarters in Damascus. "The IDF continues to monitor developments and the regime's actions against Druze civilians in southern Syria. In accordance with directives from the political echelon, the IDF is striking in the area and remains prepared for various scenarios," the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) wrote on X. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also put out a statement saying that his country's forces were "acting to save our Druze brothers and eliminate the regime's gangs" and warning Druze in Israel not to go into Syria. "I have one request of you: You are citizens of Israel. Do not cross the border," Netanyahu said on Wednesday. "You are endangering your lives; you could be killed, you could be kidnapped, and you are harming the IDF's efforts. Therefore, I ask you, return to your homes, let the IDF do its work." WHY SYRIA PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN TRUMP'S PLANS FOR MIDDLE EAST PEACE The southern Syrian city of Sweida has become a flashpoint in recent days as the country's leaders clash with armed Druze groups. Syria's Defense Ministry claimed its forces acted after militias in Sweida violated a ceasefire agreement reached on Tuesday. Syria's Defense Ministry reportedly said in a statement that its forces were continuing to fire in Sweida "while adhering to rules of engagement," including preventing harm, according to the Associated Press. Israel has threatened to increase its involvement in Syria and vowed to protect the Druze religious minority, which began as a 10th-century offshoot of Ismailism, a branch of Shiite Islam, the Associated Press reported. Most of the world's Druze population lives in Syria, with the rest predominantly in Israel and Lebanon. "And I raise the question: What else needs to happen for the international community to make its voice heard? What else needs to happen? What are we still waiting for?," Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa'ar said on Wednesday. "Our interests in Syria are known, limited and clear. First of all, to maintain the status quo in the southern Syrian region, which is also close to our border. And to prevent the development of threats against Israel in this area. The second thing - to prevent harm to the Druze community, with which we have a bold and strong relationship - with the Druze citizens here in Israel." TRUMP'S PUSH FOR ISRAEL-SYRIA PEACE GETS MAJOR BACKING AS ACTIVIST BRINGS MESSAGE TO JERUSALEM The Druze are a prominent minority in Israel, where members of the community hold key military positions. In 2015, Col. Ghassan Alian, who is Druze, became the first non-Jewish commander of the Golani Brigade. Additionally, unlike other minorities in Israel, Druze males are not exempt from conscripted military service. "Israel is committed to preventing harm to the Druze in Syria due to the deep brotherhood alliance with our Druze citizens in Israel, and their familial and historical connection to the Druze in Syria – and we are acting to prevent the Syrian regime from harming them, and to ensure the demilitarization of the area adjacent to our border with Syria," a joint statement by Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz read. The latest unrest in Syria began with kidnappings and attacks between the Sunni Bedouin tribes and Druze armed factions in the southern part of the country, according to the Associated Press. Syrian regime forces operating to restore order have also clashed with the Druze and have reportedly been carrying out extrajudicial killings and looting and burning civilian homes. Former Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose regime was toppled in December by Ahmed al-Sharaa and his group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham — a U.S.-designated terror organization, is a member of the Alawite community. Why Reform's rise isn't a surprise
It's day five of recriminations after the local elections, with politicians, pollsters and journalists alike still trying to make sense of what just happened. On today's podcast, Rachel Wolf gives her verdict: we should not be shocked by Reform's surge. She argues that Nigel Farage's success should have been predicted – that it's the same, distinctly anti-political silent majority who 'surprised' us during Brexit, 'surprised' us in 2019 and are 'surprising' us now. How will Labour respond? Will they U-turn on winter fuel? And is Boris Johnson the only one who can win back these disillusioned voters for the Tories? Oscar Edmondson speaks to James Heale and Rachel Wolf, CEO of Public First and former adviser to Boris Johnson. Produced by Oscar Edmondson and Megan McElroy.

Delta plane's landing gear collapsed during Toronto crash-landing, investigators say
The Delta Air Lines plane that landed upside down in Toronto in February suffered a landing gear collapse as it made contact with the runway, according to a new report. Investigators released a preliminary report on the crash on Thursday, saying the jet had descended at a high rate of speed, triggering a safety alarm to go off in the cockpit just 2.6 seconds before landing. The plane's right main landing gear collapsed on contact with the runway. "At touchdown, the following occurred: the side-stay that is attached to the right [main landing gear] fractured, the landing gear folded into the retracted position, the wing root fractured between the fuselage and the landing gear, and the wing detached from the fuselage, releasing a cloud of jet fuel, which caught fire," the report stated. "The exact sequence of these events is still to be determined by further examination of the fracture surfaces," it clarified. Toronto Plane Crash Timeline: Delta Flight From Minneapolis Flips Upside Down While Attempting To Land Miraculously, all 80 passengers and crew aboard the Delta flight survived the crash, though dozens suffered some level of injury. Read On The Fox News App Delta Offers Payment To Victims Amid Investigation Of Plane That Flipped Upside Down Multiple investigations into the crash are still ongoing, but Delta has pushed back against online rumors and "misleading assertions" about the crew aboard Flight 4819, operated by its subsidiary Endeavor Air. The flight's captain was hired in October 2007 by Mesaba Airlines and served as an active duty captain and in pilot training and safety capacities, the airline said. Mesaba Airlines merged with Pinnacle Airlines in 2012, leading to the creation of Endeavor Air. "Assertions that he failed training events are false. Assertions that he failed to flow into a pilot position at Delta Air Lines due to training failures are also false," the airline said Thursday in a statement. Delta also said that both the captain and first officer are "qualified and FAA certified for their positions." Shortly after the crash, Delta announced that it would be offering $30,000 to each of the victims aboard flight 4819, including 76 passengers and four crew members. Click To Get The Fox News App The payments have "no strings attached," a spokesperson for the airline told FOX Business, meaning that passengers who accept the $30,000 could potentially still take legal action.
