Delhi-Gurgaon eway set for its first major overhaul, work to start next month

Gurgaon: Work to recarpet and upgrade the 28km Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway — from Rao Tula Ram Marg in the capital to Kherki Daula in the city — will begin next month, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has finalised the contractor for the Rs 160 crore project. The expressway will undergo its first major overhaul since opening in 2008. NHAI officials said on Wednesday that the letter of acceptance has been issued to the contractor, and machinery and manpower mobilisation will begin shortly. The tender for the project was floated in May this year. The project involves recarpeting of 10km of the carriageways in Delhi and 18km in Gurgaon, along with service lanes on both sides. Pavement layers will be reinforced, particularly near flyovers, underpasses and service roads, to handle heavier traffic load. "We have awarded the work and expect it to start next month. Key improvements include rectifying road geometry at accident-prone spots, upgrading lighting to at least 40 lux (intensity), and replacing metal crash barriers with reinforced concrete ones to reduce fatalities in collisions. Service roads in Narsingpur, notorious for flooding during rains, will be reconstructed using ready-mix concrete to eliminate frequent repairs. The recarpeting of service lanes aims to improve traffic flow during diversions. The project also includes improved signage and lane markings. Commuters welcomed the move but remain cautious about timely completion. "If done efficiently, this will be a huge relief. While traffic police issue challans to drivers of two-wheelers plying on the expressway, some sections of the service lanes are not even motorable. The service road from Hero Honda Chowk to Kherki Daula is not only narrow due to encroachment but is in dilapidated condition with regular sewage overflows," said Rajat Dewan, a South City-1 resident who commutes daily to Manesar.
