Delhi-Gurgaon eway set for its first major overhaul, work to start next month
The expressway will undergo its first major overhaul since opening in 2008.
NHAI officials said on Wednesday that the letter of acceptance has been issued to the contractor, and machinery and manpower mobilisation will begin shortly. The tender for the project was floated in May this year.

The expressway, part of the Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH-8), carries an estimated 3 lakh passenger cars daily—more than double its designed capacity, making it one of India's busiest inter-city stretches.
The project involves recarpeting of 10km of the carriageways in Delhi and 18km in Gurgaon, along with service lanes on both sides. Pavement layers will be reinforced, particularly near flyovers, underpasses and service roads, to handle heavier traffic load.
"We have awarded the work and expect it to start next month. Although we have been maintaining the highway as part of routine annual maintenance, this will be a major overhaul focusing on strengthening and resurfacing, addressing engineering issues and improving road safety," an NHAI official said.

The upgradation will be executed in phases over two years to minimise disruption. Key improvements include rectifying road geometry at accident-prone spots, upgrading lighting to at least 40 lux (intensity), and replacing metal crash barriers with reinforced concrete ones to reduce fatalities in collisions.
Service roads in Narsingpur, notorious for flooding during rains, will be reconstructed using ready-mix concrete to eliminate frequent repairs.
The recarpeting of service lanes aims to improve traffic flow during diversions. The project also includes improved signage and lane markings.
Commuters welcomed the move but remain cautious about timely completion.
"If done efficiently, this will be a huge relief. While traffic police issue challans to drivers of two-wheelers plying on the expressway, some sections of the service lanes are not even motorable. The service road from Hero Honda Chowk to Kherki Daula is not only narrow due to encroachment but is in dilapidated condition with regular sewage overflows," said Rajat Dewan, a South City-1 resident who commutes daily to Manesar.

E20 rollout sparks consumer concerns: Mileage dip, engine woes reported — what car owners say about use of ethanol-blended petrol
Ethanol-blended petrol worries consumers (AI-image) The nationwide rollout of 20 per cent ethanol-blended petrol (E20) has triggered a wave of questions and concerns from vehicle owners, with many claiming declining fuel efficiency, sluggish performance and higher maintenance costs. Service centres say non-E20-compliant vehicles — which still account for a majority on Indian roads — are facing engine wear and gasket failures, forcing consumers to recalibrate or replace parts. Car owners were quoted by Economic Times an their experience and opinion on government's Ethanol-based fuel. Mileage and performance hit? Rahul Vaidya, who owns a 2019 Volkswagen Vento, saw his car's mileage fall from 11–12 kmpl to 7–8 kmpl. 'The ride felt heavier, and the response wasn't as crisp,' he said, before a service centre confirmed his car wasn't E20-compliant. After replacing critical components and recalibrating the engine, performance was restored. Mahesh Nair, who drives a 2021 Suzuki Brezza, reported a similar drop of over 20 per cent in mileage, along with jerky drives and poor pick-up. His vehicle required ECU tuning and E20-compatible parts to resolve the issues. 'I had no idea my car wasn't ready for E20 in the first place,' he said. Industry executives estimate non-E20 vehicles may see fuel efficiency fall by around 7 per cent, while official studies, including those by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and the Petroleum Ministry, peg the drop at 1–6 per cent. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why this MBA won't break the bank SRM Online Learn More Undo ARAI director Reji Mathai said field trials had shown 'no abnormalities,' though some plastics and elastomers did degrade under testing. Policy push vs consumer awareness The ethanol-blending programme is central to India's energy strategy. From April 2023, all new vehicles were required to be E20-compliant, with stricter enforcement beginning April 2025. Yet, nine out of ten cars currently on the road are only E10-ready, designed to handle a maximum of 10 per cent ethanol. Consumers, however, appear largely unaware. 'There's a glaring gap in awareness. OEMs must educate car buyers. Consumers are stakeholders too,' said Naveen Soni, former president of Lexus India. Two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp has issued advisories warning older vehicles may need modifications to run smoothly on E20. Some automakers have also hinted warranties may not hold for vehicles running on higher ethanol blends. Oil companies maintain additives are being introduced to limit corrosion. Brazil's decades-long experience with flex-fuel technology is often cited as a model, though experts note India's consumer transition is proving more abrupt. For the government, the programme has saved over Rs 1.44 lakh crore in foreign exchange since 2014, substituted 245 lakh metric tonnes of crude, and cut CO₂ emissions by the equivalent of planting 30 crore trees. Ethanol demand has also boosted sugarcane farmers' incomes, with payments this year alone expected to touch Rs 40,000 crore. But for vehicle owners, the immediate impact is higher fuel bills and repairs. 'E20 has a lower heat content than pure petrol, so a marginal drop in fuel efficiency is inevitable,' said IV Rao, Distinguished Fellow at TERI. 'The extent will vary by manufacturer and model, but consumers must not be left in the dark.' FASTag Annual Pass Records 1.4 Lakh Buyers On Day One Of Sale: Price, Benefits And More
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has successfully implemented the 'FASTag Annual Pass' facility at about 1,150 toll plazas on National Highways and Expressways across the country. Also, the FASTag has received an overwhelming response as it recorded 1.4 lakh buyers on its Independence Day launch. According to NHAI, till 7:00 pm on the first day of implementation on August 15, around 1.4 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass, and around 1.39 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plazas. Also, around 20,000-25,000 concurrent users are using the Rajmargyatra App at any point in time, and annual pass users are receiving SMS messages for zero deduction of toll fee, according to the NHAI. FASTag Annual Pass: Benefits As mentioned earlier, the FASTag Annual pass will allow up to 200 toll crossings or one year's validity (whichever comes first). This will reduce the user's stress for frequent transactions. Like the current FASTag system, the annual pass will also feature contactless transactions, allowing commuters to pay without longer halts. The existing FASTag users need not get a new FASTag, and just need to update it to the annual subscription. This will help them to be eligible for the new norms without hassle. FASTag Annual Pass: Price The FASTag annual pass costs Rs 3,000 only, and users can make the transaction through multiple payment options like credit cards, UPI, or net banking. Also, when the validity or the toll limit expires, users can then recharge their annual pass in the same way as the current FASTag. FASTag Annual Pass: How To Buy? The FASTag Annual Pass is now live as an optional service. Users preferring the existing FASTag system must continue paying under the current scheme and will retain associated benefits. However, users who wish to get the FASTag annual pass need to visit the Rajmarg Yatra app or the NHAI/MoRTH website using their vehicle number and FASTag ID. Users must ensure that their FASTag is active, attached properly, and linked to the registered vehicle ID. After following the instructions and filling in details, users will then have to initiate a Rs 3,000 transaction and await confirmation. After the confirmation, the FASTag annual pass will be ready to use with immediate effect.

EVs set to dominate 2025 festive launches, rare-earth crunch a concern
The August–November window is expected to be one of the busiest for electric vehicle (EV) launches in India's history. Alongside the e-Vitara, Tata Sierra EV, and VinFast SUVs, luxury carmakers will unveil the BMW iX 2025, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric. Mahindra's Vision S and SXT concepts are also progressing towards production. The two-wheeler segment will see new scooters and premium electric motorcycles, though mass-market e-motorcycles remain at least a year away. Nikhil Dhaka, Vice-President at Primus Partners, said: 'The August to November festive window could be the heaviest EV launch season India has ever seen. We're looking at mass-market SUVs, luxury EVs, and accessible scooters all hitting the market at the same time, a rare confluence that could energise both urban and semi-urban demand.' The first half of 2025 has already brought a surge of EV activity in India, with global giants and domestic automakers ramping up launches ahead of the festive season. Tesla's long-awaited debut with the Model Y in July set the tone, followed by mass-market entries such as the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Harrier EV, Kia Carens Clavis EV, Hyundai Venue EV, and Mahindra's BE 6 and XEV 9E. The Tata Safari EV was also confirmed, while two-wheeler makers introduced fresh options such as the Kinetic Green DX electric scooter. The Tata Harrier EV, launched on 3 June, opened bookings in early July with prices expected between Rs 24 lakh and Rs 30 lakh. Kia rolled out its Carens Clavis EV on 15 July, starting at Rs 17.99 lakh. In the pipeline, Maruti Suzuki's first all-electric SUV, the e-Vitara, is slated for a September launch with two battery options and a range of up to 500 km. Vietnamese automaker VinFast is also preparing for its India entry with the VF6 and VF7, manufactured at its Tamil Nadu plant. Despite the momentum, industry stakeholders warn of headwinds. 'EV penetration will grow only if raw material availability is secured,' said Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada) President C.S. Vigneshwar, pointing to rare-earth magnet supply concerns. Passenger vehicle EV penetration is currently estimated at 4–4.5 per cent, while two-wheelers are at 5–7 per cent. Analysts note that adoption is heavily tied to new product launches, with penetration often plateauing after the initial demand surge. Other barriers flagged by analysts include reduced incentives, charging infrastructure gaps, and resale value concerns. Regulatory pressure from stricter emission norms is pushing OEMs to invest, but supply chain bottlenecks — especially in sourcing rare-earth materials — could delay festive-season rollouts. 'EV adoption in India is very much launch-driven — we see a spike in penetration after new models hit the market, but it often plateaus without sustained demand drivers. Supply chain issues, especially rare-earth shortages, could slow down the pace we are expecting this festive season,' said Kumar Rakesh, Analyst at BNP Paribas. Still, the breadth of upcoming products, from affordable scooters to aspirational luxury SUVs, signals a widening of India's EV market. If launches proceed as planned, this festive season could mark a new high point for electric mobility in the country.
