BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — The Raleigh County Sheriff's Office is cracking down on drunk awarded grant funding will allow for the sheriff's office to expand its resources to identify drivers who get behind the wheel after too many drinks. A recent meeting of the Raleigh County Commission saw funds secured for the department to conduct a greater number of DUI checkpoints throughout the county. Sheriff's office members said drivers should think twice before operating a vehicle under the influence.'You don't want to be in that position where you caused a fatality because you have to live with that your whole life,' says Corporal Eikost of the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office. 'It's very important for you to have public safety at your main focus when you're driving.' $15,000 in grant funding approved by the Raleigh County Commission was awarded during a Raleigh County Commission meeting on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 to allow for more frequent roadside checkpoints from the sheriff's office, which are expected to be conducted in the area over the next several months. BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – One Raleigh County road will be closed after an accident. Raleigh County Commission, Solid Waste Authority announces Litter Pickup Program From Northwestern Avenue to Carriage Drive, Harper Road will be closed, according to the Beckley Police Department Facebook page. This is because of a tractor trailer rollover. All traffic heading westbound on Harper Road is being diverted onto Westwood Drive. The Raleigh County Commission will convene in regular session at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6. The commission will address a full agenda of items during the meeting, which will be staged in commission chambers at 116 1⁄2 N. Heber St. in Beckley. Among the new business items on the agenda are the following: • Introduction of a new employee for Raleigh County Sheriff Law Enforcement. Edward D. Vaught will be an animal control officer; • Consideration of an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Beckley, the Raleigh County Commission and the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority; • A resolution authorizing Gregory A. Duckworth to apply for and use the funds from the Courthouse Security Grant to upgrade cameras at the Judicial Annex; • Open bids on a new vehicle for the Raleigh County Day Report Center to be reimbursed by a grant from the West Virginia First Foundation; • Consideration of an O&M agreement with Segra for the airport broadband project; • Consideration of renewal of Delta Dental insurance for Raleigh County employees; • Estate of Margaret Dare Bailey; • Consideration of increasing the annual allocation to the WVU Extension Service to $22,000; • Consideration of a grant of $72,650 for the Harper/Eccles sewer project; • Consideration of a $10,000 grant to the Trap Hill Little League; • Consideration of a $10,000 grant to Raleigh County Crime Stoppers; • Consideration of a $3,000 grant to Raleigh County Special Olympics; • Consideration of a $2,000 grant to Chornwood Trout Unlimited for a veterans fishing retreat; • Consideration of drawdown No. 14 on the Piney View sewer extension for the North Beckley PSD in the amount of $673,458; • Consideration of a proposal from Enterprise Fleet Management; and • Consideration of a litter pickup program with the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority. BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – Members of the Raleigh County Commission have voted unanimously to give preference to resident vendors for certain purchases. The development will offer an advantage to tax-paying businesses based in Raleigh County for certain bids and contracts within a 2% range of offers from competing out-of-county vendors. Governor Morrisey announces Mountaineer Mile State Park Trails 'If you're a Raleigh County business owner who pays taxes here, you should get preference if you're doing business with the county government,' says Raleigh County Commission President, Greg Duckworth. 'So we're very happy to extend that vendor preference if you're a Raleigh County business, and we want to buy from you first.'Raleigh County Commission President Greg Duckworth tells 59News that, while the commission doesn't want to put walls up to neighboring counties, Raleigh County-based vendors should in fact receive preference for purchases and contracts pertaining to the Raleigh County area. Occasionally, gambling may become more than a social past time and may begin to interfere with the finances and emotional health of those who gamble. Local WWII veteran, Purple Heart recipient dies at 98 Addictions experts say a preoccupation with gambling, making larger bets, chasing losses and a compulsion to gamble are all signs of a gambling addiction. Roy Shrewsbury II, the vice-chairman of the West Virginia Lottery Commission, said there is help available in West Virginia for those who suspect they may be addicted to gambling. 'We have various options that you can use, one of them being to call 1-800-GAMBLER,' Shrewsbury said on Monday, March 17, 2025. 'That's a helpline to help you if you have gambling issues.' Raleigh County Commission honors WWII veterans Shrewsbury said the hotline provides a variety of resources and help. In addition, he said that the West Virginia Lottery Commission can provide extra help by barring someone who is addicted to gambling from entering state gaming establishments for one year.
