Addictions experts say a preoccupation with gambling, making larger bets, chasing losses and a compulsion to gamble are all signs of a gambling addiction.
Roy Shrewsbury II, the vice-chairman of the West Virginia Lottery Commission, said there is help available in West Virginia for those who suspect they may be addicted to gambling.
'We have various options that you can use, one of them being to call 1-800-GAMBLER,' Shrewsbury said on Monday, March 17, 2025. 'That's a helpline to help you if you have gambling issues.'

Shrewsbury said the hotline provides a variety of resources and help.
In addition, he said that the West Virginia Lottery Commission can provide extra help by barring someone who is addicted to gambling from entering state gaming establishments for one year.
Shrewsbury directed those who need help to visit the West Virginia Lottery website if they have more questions about responsible gambling and resources for help.

Why are veterans protesting Trump Administration on D-Day? What to know about VA cuts

Veterans across the U.S. are planning to gather on D-Day, June 6, in order to protest the Trump Administration's cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as cuts to other government staff and programs. The veteran-led protests will take place at the nation's capitol in Washington, D.C., as well as at 16 state capitol buildings and over 100 other venues within 43 states. The protests are being held on D-Day in honor of the sacrifices WWII veterans made during the Normandy invasion in order to defeat fascism and, now, veterans are coming together to defeat fascism in the U.S., says activism organization Indivisible. There are two planned protests on June 6 in Louisiana, and all abled-body veterans, military families, allies and civilians are being called upon to come together for a peaceful rally advocating for the protection of veteran benefits. The "D-Day 2025: A Veterans Rally and March," hosted by Indivisible New Orleans, will take place from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Lafayette Square, located at S Maestri St., in New Orleans. The second protest, "Unite for Veterans. Unite for America Rally" by Indivisible Lafayette will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. at 107 E. University Avenue, in Lafayette. "Veterans are facing cuts to the VA and other benefits they earned, while watching an administration roll over the U.S. Constitution, which as those who wore the uniform know, they took an oath to protect," says Indivisible. Video: Legendary singer gifts Purple Heart vet a new home

Legendary country singer George Strait recently gifted a U.S. veteran and Purple Heart recipient a new home during a concert in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. According to Taste of Country, the iconic country music singer gifted Sergeant Derek Austin, a U.S. veteran and Purple Heart recipient, with a new house during his Pittsburgh concert on May 31 in partnership with the Military Warriors Support Foundation. In a video from Strait's concert, an announcer with Military Warriors Support Foundation can be heard sharing Austin's story of service to the United States during his deployment in Afghanistan. 'I want to tell you a story about this American hero — and tell you what he did for our freedom,' the announcer told the crowd. He explained that Austin was 'injured severely from shrapnel wounds when his convoy was attacked' in Afghanistan. 'Because of that, he also suffered severely from TBI, and PTSD,' the announcer said. 'We're gonna say thank you in a very, very, very special way,' he added. 'We're gonna give this hero a beautiful home!' 'George, it's about $61 million worth we've given away together,' the announcer said. According to the Military Warriors Support Foundation's website, Strait has partnered with the organization for almost 14 years in 32 different states to give away over 120 homes to Gold Star Families and veterans who were wounded in combat. 'As a veteran himself, George Strait has long supported American military personnel,' the website states. 'During his sold-out concerts, George Strait stops his performance to recognize and honor our country's combat-wounded veterans and Gold Star spouses. These Heroes are brought on stage to meet George and are celebrated by thousands in the crowd as they are presented with a mortgage-free home. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these Heroes and their families.'
