Kuladalli Keelyavudo Movie Review: Promises fire, delivers ash

Some films arrive flaunting big names and even bigger messages. But when the narrative lacks grip and the emotions fall flat, what remains is a muddled mess. Kuladalli Keelyavudo, written by Yogaraj Bhat and Isla Uddin, and directed by Ramnarayan, is a prime example of this cinematic misfire—ambitious, noisy, but ultimately incoherent. The film sets out to address caste disparity—a subject deeply rooted in reality and worthy of nuanced storytelling. Yet, despite societal progress on the ground, this attempt feels dated and poorly translated to the screen. The narrative begins on land rights and identity only to devolve into confusion wrapped in half-baked symbolism. Director: Ramnarayan Cast: Madenur Manu, Mouna Guddemane, Sharath Lohithaswa, Tabla Nani, and Karisubbu

Kuladalli Keelyavudo Team Interview: 'The story called for an ordinary face to reflect extraordinary truths'

Director Ramnarayan, known for films like Snehitaru, Paipoti, Tyson, Crack, Rajamarthanda, and Abbara, takes an unexpected turn in his latest venture, Kuladalli Keelyavudo. After decades of working with stars like Srujan Lokesh, Vijay Raghavendra, Guru Jaggesh (son of Jaggesh), Vinod Prabhakar (Tiger Prabhakar's son), Prajwal Devaraj (Devaraj's son), and Chiranjeevi Sarja, he has chosen to back a complete newcomer. 'This film didn't require a celebrity—it needed someone real,' says Ram Narayan, adding, 'Yogaraj Bhat's story called for an ordinary face to reflect extraordinary truths," says Ramnarayan ahead of the film's release this week Kuladalli Keelyavudo tackles deeper societal issues, moving beyond a commentary on caste. It questions systemic biases—from food and love to religion and land rights—layered with hard-hitting moments meant to provoke. 'It's not about upper or lower caste. It's about why caste still defines our identity today,' Ram asserts. 'When someone is questioned about what they eat or who they love based on caste, we're not talking tradition—we're talking regression.'

Kannada filmmaker K Ramnarayan on removing Sonu Nigam's songs from Kuladalli Keelyavudo after Bengaluru concert row: ‘He must pay a price for that'

Veteran Kannada filmmaker K Ramnarayan has taken a firm stand against playback singer Sonu Nigam following the controversy surrounding the latter's comments at a Bengaluru concert. On Thursday, May 8, Ramnarayan announced that he has removed two songs sung by Sonu Nigam from his upcoming film Kuladalli Keelyavudo , stating that the singer's apology was not sufficient. Connecting Kannada pride to the national tragedy that happened in Pahalgam is a very grave mistake. He must pay a price for that." Ramnarayan revealed that the film, set to release in theatres on May 23, had originally featured three songs in its promotional rollout, two of which were sung by Sonu Nigam. One of those tracks was particularly significant: the title song, which is a tribute to the iconic 1965 Kannada film Satya Harishchandra, starring Dr. Rajkumar. "In fact, he sang the title track, which is a tribute to possibly the most famous Kannada song, featured in legendary actor Rajkumar's 1965 film, Satya Harishchandra. The original Kuladalli Keelyavudo is so sacred for the Kannada film industry – our orchestra, while recording songs, ends by playing this song. How can this song be sung by someone like Nigam, who thinks so lowly of us?" In music production, track singers typically provide demo vocals before final recordings. While the film's team has already removed Sonu Nigam's versions from their official YouTube channels, Manasu Haadtade remains live on the singer's personal YouTube page. The controversy began at a Bengaluru concert, where Sonu Nigam allegedly shut down a student's repeated request to sing in Kannada. The singer linked the request to the 2023 Pahalgam terror attack, a comment that was widely criticized. He reportedly said, "I had started singing Kannada songs even before he was born. This is why the recent attack happened... for such a kind of attitude. At least see who is in front of you before making such demands." Though Sonu Nigam later issued an apology on Instagram, stating that his love for Karnataka is greater than his ego, Ramnarayan believes that isn't enough. Kannada director who replaced Sonu Nigam's songs says apology ‘not enough': How can someone who thinks so lowly of us…

Singer Sonu Nigam's apology is not enough, he must also face repercussions for saying such harsh words, said Kannada director K Ramnarayan on Thursday. Ramnarayan said he replaced two songs sung by Sonu in his upcoming film, Kuladalli Keelyavudo, with track versions. (Also Read: Sonu Nigam's song removed from Kannada film despite his apology: 'We are very upset, cannot tolerate insult') "Just saying sorry will not cut it. Connecting Kannada pride to the national tragedy that happened in Pahalgam is a very grave mistake. He must pay a price for that," said Ramnarayan to PTI. According to him, his latest film, Kuladalli Keelyavudo, is expected to be released in theatres on May 23. To publicise the film, three songs have already been released, two of which are by Sonu. How can this song be sung by someone like Nigam, who thinks so lowly of us?" said Ramnarayan. The director said both songs sung by Nigam—the other one is Manasu Haadtade—are being replaced with the 'track singer' versions. "Track singer is Chethan Sosca. We actually liked the track versions of both the songs that we had sent to Nigam so he could get an idea of the tune. Now, we are fine-tuning them, so we could release them with Chethan's voice," added Ramnarayan. In music production, a 'track singer' refers to a singer who initially records a vocal performance for a song, often as a demo. While the makers of Kuladalli Keelyavudo have already removed it from YouTube, Sonu's version of Manasu Haadtade is still available on his YouTube channel. "I have a very long association with Nigam, who has sung more than 1,000 songs in Kannada. The song that I wrote, Ninna Nodalentho for the film Mussanje Maatu, featuring Kannada stars Sudeep Kichcha and Ramya, was sung by Nigam almost 12 years ago," said Ramnarayan, who wrote scripts and lyrics before he started directing. The director, who has seven films to his credit, including the blockbuster Tyson, said the song won a Filmfare award for Sonu. "We were all so happy for him then. He deserved that award. Just like now, he deserves a ban from the Kannada industry. Someone of his stature should think more before they hurl hurtful words at others," said Ramnarayan. Sonu on Monday issued an apology following his Bengaluru concert row. He shared a post on his Instagram handle and said his love for Karnataka is bigger than his ego. "Sorry, Karnataka. My Love for you, is bigger than my Ego. Love you always," he wrote in his post. A complaint was filed by the pro-Kannada organisation Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) against the singer for reportedly retorting, 'Kannada. Kannada. This is the reason behind the incident in Pahalgam,' in response to an audience member's request to sing in Kannada. The incident occurred during a live concert on April 25 at a college in Bengaluru. Nigam paused his performance when someone from the audience loudly demanded that he sing in Kannada. Frustrated by the repeated shouts of 'Kannada, Kannada,' the singer responded sharply from the stage.
