'BJP will win 10 out of 12 zones in MCD standing committee polls', says BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri

BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri (Image credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said on Monday that the party is confident it can secure a majority in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing Committee elections. Speaking to ANI, Bidhuri said, "We will win the election of the standing committee. The BJP will win 10 out of 12 zones." He further said that the party's presence in the central government, the Delhi administration, and the MCD would ensure that development work continues without hindrance. "The BJP is in the centre, state (Delhi), and MCD, and all the work will go smoothly. The triple-engine government works according to the wishes of the people of Delhi," he added. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) chairmen, deputy chairmen of 12 ward committees, and two standing committee members--each from the South Zone and City-SP Zone--will be elected today. The election of the two standing committee members was necessitated after Prem Chauhan and Punardeep Singh Sawhney, who had been elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly, tendered their resignations. Prem Chauhan and Punardeep Singh Sawhney were the standing committee members from the Wards Committee South Zone and the Wards Committee City-SP Zone, respectively. "In pursuance of Sub-section (5) of Section 45 of the Act, these vacancies are to be filled up by the concerned wards committees in a meeting from amongst the Councillors of the Wards Committee", a notice from MCD said. The BJP and AAP are making every effort to ensure their candidates win. Out of the 12 ward committees, elections in three zones will be uncontested, as only one candidate is in each zone. The results will shape the standing committee's formation and reveal which party gains majority control to appoint its Chairman. Meanwhile, AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj said on Sunday that the election will reveal the relationship between Congress and the BJP. "Tomorrow, there are elections for the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the MCD Rohini zone. On one side is the panel of BJP-supported IVP, and on the other is the Aam Aadmi Party . The Congress president should tell whom the two Congress councillors will vote for tomorrow. Tomorrow, the relationship between Congress and the BJP will be revealed," he said on X. On May 24, with over two years still to go, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) shifted into mission mode for the 2027 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, setting its sights on forming a huge majority in the civic body, a press release from the Aam Aadmi Party said. In a high-level strategy meeting held on Friday, senior AAP leader and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the MCD House, Ankush Narang, met with all party councillors to start the preparations. Former Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia reviewed ward-level issues in detail and directed councillors to ensure immediate redressing. "Arvind Kejriwal has pioneered alternative work politics across India. Our goal now is to take this model to every household and make it even stronger," said Manish Sisodia.

Delhi Unveils South Asia's Largest 20-MW Battery Energy Storage System to Boost Power Supply

New Delhi: Delhi power minister Ashish Sood on Thursday inaugurated a 20-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at Kilokari, said to be the "largest" in South Asia. The system is also India's "first commercially approved" utility-scale energy storage system that will ensure improved power supply in different south Delhi areas, covering a population of over one lakh people, according to a statement from power discom BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Limited). The 20-MW (40 MWh) BESS installed at the BRPL substation at Kilokari is the "largest" utility-scale system in South Asia. "The energy storage system is designed to deliver up to four hours of reliable daily power—two hours each during the day and night—directly benefiting over one lakh residents in the densely populated Kilokri area in south Delhi," it stated. The system offers multiple benefits such as improved power supply, enhanced grid stability, optimised power purchase costs, peak shaving, reduced overloading of the network, and renewable power integration. Strategically located at the 33/11 kV Kilokri substation, it will deliver up to four hours of reliable daily power, two hours each during the day and night, directly benefiting over 1,00,000 residents in the densely populated Kilokri area in south Delhi, said discom BSES. This initiative significantly enhances grid reliability, especially during peak demand periods, setting a new standard for urban energy management. The project, completed within a year, leverages advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology known for superior safety, thermal stability, and durability. The system's temperature-controlled containers ensure optimal operations under Delhi's diverse weather conditions, making it ideally suited for dense urban locations, the discom said. South delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, BSES director and group CEO Amal Sinha, BRPL CEO Abhishek Ranjan, and many other officials were present at the inauguration ceremony. The power minister said that the govt would deploy this new technology in Delhi and ensure the required investment for the same. "Entrepreneurs keen to work in the solar energy sector will also be supported with necessary facilities to help ensure continuous and sustainable power supply. The project will not only aid clean energy storage and green energy promotion but also marks the beginning of a new era of innovation," he said. Sood stated that implementing this 20 MW storage system will reduce the strain on Delhi's power infrastructure. The govt will scale up the model further, particularly in unauthorised colonies and areas with limited land availability or no existing grid. He said the Delhi govt's top priority is to overhaul the neglected and outdated power infrastructure of the last 10 years. The aim is to rapidly adopt new technologies to ensure smooth and round-the-clock electricity supply for the people of Delhi, he said.

Sainik Farms demolitions: Delhi's unauthorised colonies and the plan to regularise them

After the recent demolition drive in South Delhi's Sainik Farms area, there is renewed attention on unauthorised colonies in the national capital and the government's plan to grant ownership rights, with the Delhi Development Authority planning further action in such posh areas. What are unauthorised colonies? Unauthorised colonies are residential areas that have come up on land not approved for residential use under Delhi 's Master Plan. These colonies lack basic infrastructure and have been developed without necessary permissions, often on agricultural or government land. Residents typically possess general power of attorney or sale agreements, which are not legal ownership documents. How many unauthorised colonies are there? There are 1,800 unauthorised colonies in the city, housing around 50 lakh people spanning over 175 sq km (approximately 43,000 acres). What is PM-UDAY? The Pradhan Mantri–Unauthorised Colonies in Delhi Awas Adhikar Yojana (PM-UDAY) was launched in October 2019 by the central government to confer ownership rights to residents. The DDA is the nodal agency for implementation. Eligible residents have to submit proof of residence and pay a one-time registration charge based on the size and location of the property. Which colonies are included? Of the 1,800 colonies, 1,731 have been identified for regularisation under the PM-UDAY. However, colonies such as Sainik Farms, Mahendru Enclave, and Anant Ram Dairy were excluded based on criteria including land use violations and affluence. In March, the Delhi High Court, while hearing a petition seeking regularisation of Sainik Farms, pulled up the central government for not deciding on the issue and said the Centre and the Delhi government should iron out the regularisation issue. In February, South Delhi BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri raised in Parliament the issue of regularising Sainik Farms and 68 other such colonies to provide ownership rights and civic amenities.
