Motha MLA seeks details of STF for identification of illegal migrants

Agartala: Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has formally requested chief minister Manik Saha to clarify details about the newly formed Special Task Force (STF) aimed at identifying illegal migrants. This comes after the CM announced the state's intention to proceed with the identification process, using Dec 31, 2014, as the cut-off date. Debbarma's letter raises concerns about the transparency and structure of the STF, which has been tasked with curbing infiltration in the state. Despite the public announcement of the STF's formation, Debbarma notes that the official notification only lists a few police officers' names under the West Tripura unit, without detailing the force's structure, composition, or operational procedures. Highlighting public unease, Debbarma urged the CM to provide a written clarification to address the confusion surrounding the STF's mandate. He questioned the location of the STF headquarters in West Tripura and sought details on the number of members deployed. The MLA also inquired whether central paramilitary forces like BSF and Assam Rifles are part of the task force, as per MHA directives. Additionally, he asked if civil administration officials are included in the STF and requested information on logistical support. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo He expressed concern about the readiness of detention camps to handle detection, detention, and deportation tasks. 9-member Tipra Motha delegation to meet EC officials in New Delhi, raise issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh

Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma Saturday announced that the Election Commission (EC) has invited a delegation of his party to New Delhi to discuss the issue of illegal migration from Bangladesh. In a post on X, Pradyot Kishore said, 'After continuous uproar and media attention from all of us from TIPRA Motha, the Election Commission of India has invited us to discuss the matter of illegal migration from Bangladesh to India on the 23rd of July…' He also said, 'My only answer to all those who continue to criticise us – at least we are trying to protect our next generation and looking beyond party politics. This is not just a fight of the TIPRA Motha Party but every Indian. Please rise above party politics and unite against illegal migration.' A Tipra Motha spokesperson announced that the party would send a nine-member team headed by Pradyot Kishore to meet EC officials. The other members of the team are Minister Animesh Debbarma, Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma, Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Chairman Jagadish Debbarma, TTAADC Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia, and MLAs Ranjit Debbarma, Pathan Lal Jamatia, Philip Kumar Reang, and Sadagar Kalai. Tipra Motha legislator Ranjit Debbarma had recently said that though BJP-ruled states like Assam and Gujarat have adopted strong steps against illegal immigrants, the Tripura government was yet to do so. The EC invite also comes just days after Pradyot Kishore demanded a Bihar-style Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tripura, alleging that scores of Bangladeshis have procured Aadhaar cards illegally in the northeastern state in connivance with corrupt government officials. Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the state government has decided to form a task force in each district to detect and deport illegal migrants. Each task force would be headed by a senior police officer, while officers-in-charge of different police stations of the district concerned would be members. Earlier in the month, such a task force was formed only in the West Tripura district.

The Tripura government's actions followed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs circular , directing all states and Union Territories across the country to verify the credentials of persons suspected to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. If the documents of the foreign citizens are found to be fake or illegally procured, they would face deportation, the MHA circular had said. The ruling BJP ally Tipra Motha Party (TMP) has been organising different types of agitation for the past two months, demanding the push-back of "illegal migrants" from Bangladesh and Myanmar. The tribal past party has demanded strict implementation of the orders from the MHA concerning the identification, detention, and deportation of illegal migrants. TMP senior leader and party's legislator Ranjit Debbarma noted that the BJP-ruled states like Assam and Gujarat had taken firm steps against infiltrators, but the Tripura government had not taken adequate steps in this regard. The party's senior leader and Forest and Environment Minister Animesh Debbama had said that no infiltrators would be allowed to stay in Tripura. Debbama said that a nine-member delegation of the party led by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma would meet the Election Commission of India next week to raise several key issues related to the electoral roll preparation in Tripura. He said, "A major demand would be for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Tripura, similar to the process recently carried out in Bihar to identify the fake voters and infiltrators.'

TIPRA MLA writes to PM to rename a Delhi road after Tripura's last king

Agartala: TIPRA Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, an ally in Tripura's ruling BJP-led govt, has written to the Prime Minister urging national recognition for Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya — the last king of the erstwhile princely state — by naming a road in New Delhi after him. Citing the example of Delhi's Tikendrajit Marg, named after the crown prince of the Kangleipak kingdom (present-day Manipur), Debbarma argued that Tripura's royal heritage deserves similar honour. He proposed naming a road in the national capital as Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur Marg, erecting a statue in his memory at a prominent junction, and constructing a replica of the Tripureswari Temple — featuring all 14 deities of the Chaturdash Devta tradition — at the Indian National Museum. Debbarma's letter highlighted Maharaja Bir Bikram's role in laying the foundations of modern Tripura and facilitating its merger with the Indian union. The Merger Agreement was signed on Sept 9, 1949, by Maharani Kanchanprava Devi, the Maharaja's wife, and other state representatives, leading to Tripura's formal accession to India on Oct 15, 1949. The proposal also advocates symbolic installations representing Tripura's cultural and spiritual heritage, including replicas of the Tripureswari Temple in Udaipur and the Chaturdash Devta Temple in Khayerpur, reflecting the state's diverse faith traditions. The letter was also sent to the chief minister of Delhi, seeking her support and coordination in implementing the proposal.

Tripura rally seeks identification, deportation of illegal immigrants

Agartala: Civil Society Organisations and NGOs held a rally here on Monday, demanding the state govt identify and deport illegal migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. The demonstration, featuring a national flag, aimed to draw attention to the issue of illegal immigration in the state. Notable figures from various tribal bodies and community leaders attended the rally, including BJP's ally in the govt, TIPRA Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma. Debbarma appealed to all political parties to unite in combating illegal immigration to ensure greater unity and secure the future for the next generation. The organisers alleged a significant influx of Chakma tribes from the Chittagong Hill Tracts into the state. In the hills, these migrants have constructed Buddhist monasteries and established settlements over the years. In Agartala, a Chakma colony emerged rapidly, housing individuals from Bangladesh with illegal documents, they added. A substantial number of Chakmas secured govt jobs, including executive positions, by managing illegal documents within the state. Most mango orchards in Gandacherra of Dhalai district are owned by Chakmas who reside in other Indian cities or Chittagong, enjoying dual citizenship. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Il gioco di fattoria più rilassante del 2025. Addressing the gathering, Debbarma said that shortly after the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, the Centre issued orders to all states and territorial administrations to eliminate illegal immigrants, but these efforts failed in Tripura. Subsequent orders in 2017 and 2021 by the then Left Front and BJP govt, respectively were neither publicised nor executed. On May 19 this year, the MHA issued directives to all state govts following the Pahalgam incident to identify and deport illegal migrants to their respective countries. Consequently, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Haryana began implementing the order. "Unfortunately, the Tripura govt sat on the direction, making the indigenous people angry. These people are infiltrating Tripura and managing forged documents, buying lands, creating imbalance to our employment opportunities and resources," Debbarma said. "We should not engage in vote-bank politics regarding infiltration. Everyone must unite against illegal immigration," he asserted, adding that his party does not support community-based politics.
