Playboi Carti Performs ‘I Am Music' Cuts at 2025 BET Awards

Playboi Carti performed at tonight's BET Awards in Los Angeles. His set included 'Like Weezy' and 'Rather Lie' (sans The Weeknd, who is featured) from his chart-topping album, I Am Music. He decked out the stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles with two black, luxury SUVs, with one dancer getting down on top of one of the vehicles. His smoky set was black and white, with logos for his album, music itself, and his label, Opium, flashing rapidly behind him and his DJ. He, however, stood out in a colorful hoodie. Carti released I Am Music in March, and the highly anticipated album quickly rose to the top of the charts. Known for raucous live shows, Carti was relatively mellow during his BET Awards performance, smiling and telling the crowd, 'I love y'all, I appreciate y'all,' before leaving the stage. Carti was among a night full of performances from acts like Lil Wayne, Teyana Taylor, and more. The Weeknd Joins Taylor Swift, Drake And Bad Bunny With A New Top 10

The Weeknd scores his fifteenth top 10 on the Billboard Global 200 with 'Rather Lie,' a new ... More collaboration with Playboi Carti that debuts at No. 6. LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 07: Abel 'The Weeknd' Tesfaye performs live at the London Stadium as part of his After Hours til Dawn Tour on July 7, 2023 in London, England. (Photo by Samir Hussein/WireImage) The Weeknd is once again one of the most successful artists in the world. That's always the case, but now an important chart proves it. The Canadian superstar recently released a new full-length, and now he's back inside the top 10 on one of Billboard's most competitive charts. He joins one of the biggest names in hip-hop, and together, they score a global hit – and The Weeknd reaches a new milestone that only a handful of artists have approached. The Weeknd's new song 'Rather Lie' launches at No. 6 on the Billboard Global 200. The track is fronted by rapper Playboi Carti, and it's one of the highest-debuting titles on the roster that ranks the most-consumed cuts throughout the entire world, as the tally focuses on both streams and sales. As 'Rather Lie' starts at No. 6, The Weeknd claims his fifteenth top 10 on the Billboard Global 200. That's a feat only a handful of musicians have accomplished since the chart was launched in 2020. He becomes just the fifth act in history to land 15 top 10s on the list, joining a small but extremely successful group of artists. Drake leads all artists with 35 appearances in the top tier, while Taylor Swift follows close behind with 33. Bad Bunny has now pushed 25 cuts into the region, and 21 Savage comes in just ahead of The Weeknd, with 16. Despite having sent 15 songs into the top 10 on the Billboard Global 200, The Weeknd has only managed to lead the tally once. 'Save Your Tears,' a collaboration with Ariana Grande, landed at No. 1 in May 2021. Several other cuts have come close. 'Blinding Lights,' arguably his signature hit, made it to No. 2. So did 'Sacrifice' and 'Die For You,' another duet with Grande. While 'Rather Lie' is the highest-charting collaborative debut on the Billboard Global 200 this week, it's not the biggest new arrival overall. That honor belongs to another Carti track. His solo release 'Evil Jordan' starts off at No. 4, besting even his team-up with The Weeknd. Not far below them, Chappell Roan's 'The Giver' kicks off its time on the chart at No. 10.

The Weeknd Joins Taylor Swift, Madonna And Drake With A New Hit

The Weeknd earns his twentieth Hot 100 top 10 with 'Rather Lie,' a Playboi Carti collab that debuts ... More at No. 4 and helps him join an exclusive club. INDIO, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 21: The Weeknd performs with Metro Boomin at the Sahara tent during the 2023 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 21, 2023 in Indio, California. (Photo byfor Coachella) Throughout the past decade-plus, The Weeknd has evolved from an underground R&B favorite to a true global pop icon. He's spent years racking up hit after hit and crossing genre lines. This week, the Canadian superstar is back in familiar territory — but this latest success isn't a solo effort. He joins forces with Playboi Carti on a brand new track that launches high, earning both artists a major win. For one of them, it's the continuation of a stellar streak, while for the other, it's a milestone moment that places him into an elite group of superstars. Playboi Carti will dominate the Hot 100 this coming week (once Billboard refreshes its charts tomorrow, March 25) with two brand new smashes debuting inside the top 10 – and he may fill as many as 30 spaces with new releases. The bigger of the pair inside the top 10, 'Evil J0rdan,' narrowly misses out on ruling the tally, starting at No. 2. Just behind it, 'Rather Lie' opens at No. 4. That latter track credits both Carti and The Weeknd, who adds another hit to his already-packed discography. With 'Rather Lie,' The Weeknd officially claims his twentieth top 10 hit on the Hot 100. That figure places him among a select group of musical acts who have reached the same tier of chart success. According to Billboard, he is now the twenty-seventh artist in history to reach that mark. While The Weeknd's 20 top 10 hits are impressive, he still has a long way to go to match some of the all-time leaders. Fellow Canadian superstar Drake currently stands far ahead of the competition with 80 appearances inside the top 10 on the Hot 100. Taylor Swift follows with 59, and Madonna isn't far behind with 38. The list of artists who've landed at least 20 top 10 hits also includes global legends like The Beatles, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Mariah Carey, to name just a few. This new top 10 hit follows closely behind The Weeknd's recent album Hurry Up Tomorrow, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 earlier this year. That release produced a sole top 10 on the Hot 100, and — just like his latest success — it was also a team effort with Carti. Their previous collaboration, 'Timeless,' soared to No. 3, becoming the biggest cut from Hurry Up Tomorrow. Another focus track, 'Cry For Me,' came close to hitting the top 10, but ultimately stopped just short, peaking at No. 12. The Weeknd's 20 top 10 hits include seven that went all the way to No. 1. His roundup of wins span a variety of styles and collaborations, and he's earned his success through a mix of solo smashes, superstar pairings, and featured appearances. Throughout his career, The Weeknd has not only conquered the pop world, but has also earned wins in electronic, R&B, and hip-hop spaces.

Playboi Carti, rap's Nosferatu, sails into town with ‘Music' at Rolling Loud

Sunday night at Rolling Loud at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood looked like the biggest night of Playboi Carti's life. But for about 15 minutes in the middle of the set, his show nearly boiled over. On Friday, Carti — the gothic Atlanta emcee whose mix of extreme-metal sonics and disorienting trap music made him a Gen Z megastar—released 'Music,' his long-awaited third album. Carti rug-pulling the album last minute was a longstanding meme, so when the 30-track LP actually hit the streamers, fans were delirious. Rap's Nosferatu had finally sailed into town. With tens of thousands of fans packed into the main stage on Sunday night, matching Carti's cryptic but unhinged energy, the mood was intense. Mosh pits were inevitable, but Carti's are a breed apart. To Rolling Loud's credit, once things got heated, the promoters left no chance of disaster. A dozen songs in, the house lights went up, Carti left the stage and the screens told fans to back up, now in an effort to stop the crowd from pushing forward and crushing each other. 'We'll pay any curfew fines so Carti can do his whole set,' the organizers said over the loudspeakers as they pulled people out of the crowd. 'Everyone calm down and take three steps back.' Twenty minutes later, the show was back on, with the Weeknd crooning 'Rather Lie' and 'Timeless' surrounded by Carti's Opium crew while pyro and chugging guitars flared around them. Carti fans come for the chaos — is the rest of the music industry ready for him on the A-list? Since his 2017 mixtape debut, Carti has captivated rap fans for the feral intensity of his sound and his Suicide-riffing album art, facial piercings and occult mystique. He's not a technically-astute rapper in the way Kendrick Lamar is, but he's a visionary of smeared ad libs, freaky voices and inside-out timing. Kendrick loves him; Lamar guests on 'Music,' and calls Carti 'my evil twin' on 'Good Credit.' Much of the pre-show chatter was speculating if Lamar would pop out during Carti's set. He did not, alas, though it's fair to raise an eyebrow at Lamar vigorously co-signing a guy recently arrested for choking his pregnant girlfriend just weeks after winning Grammys for calling Drake a deadbeat pedophile. But Lamar is no one's moral savior, and if you think Carti's atypical in extreme music circles, well, we've got a burned church in Norway to sell you. What Carti brought to Rolling Loud was a volatile proposition — some of the most truly transgressive music to ever top streaming and Billboard charts, aesthetically uncompromising and veiled with real menace. Carti is to the TikTok era what Black Sabbath was in the '70s: bracing, wicked, new. This was Carti's first show since the release of 'Music,' and he got to most of it on Sunday. Long-teased tracks like 'K Pop' and 'Mojo Jojo' found their context in the red-lining churn and digital degrade of Carti's catalog. Cackling descents into trap hell like 'Cocaine Nose' and 'Evil J0rdan' flipped into plaintive, melodic singles like 'BackD00r,' which proved Carti can dip his keys into a songwriterly streak as well (there's a reason the Weeknd has him as an opener on his stadium tour right now). When Carti has more traditional rappers like Lamar or Skepta as a guest, or especially the Weeknd's keening romance on a hook, there's a hint of how generationally good this music could be if he put a little more ballast into his rapping and writing. The same goes for his live performances. Carti's famous for his misdirection onstage, only appearing in flashes on screens and hiding in a roiling sea of fog and flames. But there's a line between entrancing vagueness and just not being that present — there were long stretches where Carti seemed to leave the stage entirely while pre-recorded lead vocals still played. That was probably fine for this show to the faithful, and no one working today can match the mercurial strangeness of Carti's complete vision. But Carti clearly wants to be regarded as a defining, boundary-pushing artist of our time. He absolutely is, and he's smashing streaming records while doing it. His Rolling Loud set reaffirmed that one-of-one status — even if he can't coast on his plague ship forever.
