Netflix Reportedly Cancels New Movies In Fan-Favorite Franchise

Netflix had major plans to launch a big-budget film franchise that could rival the likes of Star Wars . The series even had a visionary director attached to bring the story to life. However, with the release of only two films, it looks like Netflix is now canceling their plans to make any other movies in this fan-favorite franchise. While the films do have dedicated fans, it looks like the fanbase just isn't big enough, as Netflix is reportedly uninterested in making any additional sequels. With hopes that it could have been their own Star Wars , they must've been banking on a bigger widespread commercial appeal, and they seemingly just haven't reached it. This was shared by Kurt Johnstad, a co-writer for the two existing films, who revealed they outlined the plots for an additional four movies. Sadly, however, it looks like those plans won't becoming to fruition. Here's what Johnstad shared via the MINUTEMEN podcast: 'We outlined movies 3, 4, 5, and 6… very detailed outlines,' Johnstad revealed, referring to potential additional films in the Rebel Moon franchise. While they had plans for a total of six films, however, he continues to explain that the Rebel Moon series seems to be dead with only two releases. 'Zack has literally plotted out the whole world. We know where we can go… we've written… detailed outlines…The second movie was to find the princess. And the third movie is to make sure that the princess is where she should be — sitting on the throne and properly ruling… over the Mother World.' 'With some luck and an act of God, we'll get to go back to that world.' While there might be some life left in the franchise, he does emphasize that it would take 'an act of God' to make more movies, so it seems likely that Netflix has absolutely no interest at this time. However, fans will no doubt keep hope alive for a Rebel Moon comeback. After all, Zack Snyder fans have proven their dedication with other infamous Snyder projects. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news regarding the Rebel Moon franchise and the future works of Zack Snyder as we have them. For now, those interested can still view the original two Rebel Moon films on Netflix.

A Third REBEL MOON Movie? 'An Act of God' Might Be the Only Way, Says Writer Kurt Johnstad — GeekTyrant

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon was meant to be a sprawling six-part space opera, a big swing at building a new sci-fi mythology for Netflix. But after two films and a mountain of mixed reactions, mostly bad, the dream seemed to crash and burn. Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver didn't land the way it needed to. Sure, it opened strong and briefly topped Netflix's viewership charts, but the drop-off was steep. Engagement plummeted after the premiere, and critical reception has been cold. Rotten Tomatoes has the film sitting at a 16% with a brutal 3.8/10 average score. Critics described it as 'an uninvolving space opera full of flat notes.' And while Part One: A Child of Fire was no critical hit either, there was still a sense of curiosity, but that curiosity seems to have burned out. Despite Netflix sinking an estimated $166 million into the first two chapters, the response has likely given executives second thoughts about funding another big-budget sequel, let alone four more. The silence from Netflix since the release of Scargiver has been telling. Still, screenwriter Kurt Johnstad, who co-wrote both Rebel Moon films with Snyder, says there is a plan. A very detailed one. On a recent episode of the I MINUTEMEN podcast, he shared just how far down the road the team had gone in building out the universe, and how unlikely it is that fans will ever see where that road leads. 'We outlined movies 3, 4, 5, and 6… very detailed outlines, and Zack has literally plotted out the whole world. We know where we can go… we've written… detailed outlines. 'The second movie was to find the princess. And the third movie is to make sure that the princess is where she should be — sitting on the throne and properly ruling… over the Mother World.' It sounds promising, but those first two movie were not good. When asked point-blank about the odds of a third film happening, Johnstad didn't sugarcoat it: 'With some luck and an act of God, we'll get to go back to that world.' Not exactly a confidence booster. For now, Snyder and Johnstad are shifting gears and pivoting away from space rebellions and into a new Netflix project: a gritty LAPD thriller. It's reportedly lower-budget and more grounded, a notable departure from the recent string of high-concept Snyder-verse spectacles (Army of the Dead, Rebel Moon, 300). At this point, Rebel Moon's legacy might be less about the saga we were promised and more about the reality of ambitious worldbuilding in the streaming era… no matter how big your galaxy is, if people aren't watching, the universe collapses fast. So unless divine intervention shows up wielding a checkbook and a greenlight, don't expect to see another Rebel Moon movie.

Production Assistants' Union Drive Gets Boost From Bernie Sanders Rally: 'Studios Will Push Back'

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's 'Fighting Oligarchy' tour stop in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday featured politicians, famous musicians, labor leaders — and Hollywood production assistants. Echoing the event's ethos of challenging corporate interests and billionaires, labor organizers focused on one of the entertainment industry's most crucial but unglamorous roles made a fiery unionization pitch to the reported 36,000 attendees. In the process, they put a spotlight on wages and working conditions as they described production assistants as being primed to build 'working-class power.' More from The Hollywood Reporter Green Day Blaze Through Headline Set, Charli XCX Brings Star Power at Coachella Day 2 Bernie Sanders Blasts Trump and Musk During Surprise Coachella Appearance SAG-AFTRA and Advertisers Reach Tentative Agreement on Successor Contracts Thousands of production assistants are 'sick and tired of being underpaid, overworked and unprotected,' said LiUNA Local 724 business manager Alex Aguilar, whose Local is heading up the union-organization effort, in a speech. 'That stops!' Organizer Clio Byrne-Gudding, a production assistant who has in the past worked on Rebel Moon parts one and two, addressed production assistants directly: 'Will you continue to allow the corporate class to walk all over you and your coworkers? Or will you stand up and put your talents to use to protect your life and the lives of your fellow PAs?' The appearance was the highest-profile yet for LiUNA organizers aiming to create a nationwide production assistants' union. The group went public at a Labor Day parade in 2024 and now have organizers in New York, Texas, Illinois and Georgia, Byrne-Gudding said on Saturday. The group's key objectives are to raise wages, address turnaround times and institute union-administered health insurance coverage. But, as organizers mentioned at the rally, they're also looking to revolutionize a typical career pathway for entry-level workers in Hollywood. 'We're organizing not just to fix one job but to transform the entire industry for future generations of workers,' said Ethan Ravens, another organizer with the group. Ravens spoke to waking up at 2 or 3 a.m. for the job, working 16-plus hour days and then getting 'five or less hours of sleep' before repeating the cycle the next day. He said he knew PAs who had fallen asleep at the wheel while working productions' sometimes-punishing hours. 'Some of Hollywood's biggest players are the largest, most profitable companies in the world,' Ravens said in his speech. 'We're talking about Apple, Disney, Amazon. And as a PA, we're expected to carry the weight of these Hollywood productions on our backs.' Organizer Nalani Rodgers speculated on how Hollywood companies might respond to the half-a-year-old union drive in a speech. 'Studios will push back, they'll tell you you're just lucky to be here, that things will never change and it is what it is,' she said. 'You and your fellow workers must resist giving into fear.' The appearance preceded a rally that will take place for the organizing effort on May 4 in Burbank. The organizers are ramping up their efforts at a challenging time for crew members, especially in Los Angeles, where on-location production days fell 22 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared with a year prior. State-wide, film, TV and sound jobs were down 25 percent in California in 2024 compared with 2022, before the double strikes of 2023. Byrne-Gudding acknowledged that they have seen PAs endure 'joblessness and poverty' during their time in the industry. 'Things have been hell in Hollywood and in the world,' Byrne-Gudding said. Still, Byrne-Gudding urged their cohort to keep their eye on the ball. 'Many in the film business would tell you that winning protections for PAs in impossible. But you know what? Here in the film business, we do the impossible on a daily basis.' Zack Snyder's New UFC Movie ‘Brawler' Could Have A Star-Studded Cast

A unique fictional story about the UFC is headed to the big screen, and the cast could include familiar faces from film and mixed martial arts. According to a statement released by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia and owner of boxing magazine The Ring, acclaimed film director Zack Snyder (Justice League and Rebel Moon) has teamed up with UFC CEO Dana White and Alalshikh to direct Brawler, a new film. The story is about a man in pursuit of a spot on the UFC's main roster and his journey through the promotion. While the remake of Road House had some ties to the UFC based on Jake Gyllenhaal's character's (Dalton) past—and Conor McGregor served as the primary antagonist—it wasn't a movie about the UFC. Brawler appears to be a film with a story heavily rooted in the dream of reaching the UFC and the experience associated with the promotion. As of now, there's been no official news on the cast, but I do not expect to see fighters placed in the key roles of the film. However, I do believe the film will have some noteworthy cameos from people in the UFC stratosphere. Based on Snyder's history and the UFC's involvement, here are some casting concepts and people to consider. Take this as nothing more than deep-thought spitballing and fodder for conversation about an exciting film concept. Fisher has history with Snyder. The 37-year-old from Maryland played Cyborg in Justice League and Darrian Bloodaxe in Rebel Moon. Fisher has already shown his level of commitment to fitness, as he has gotten jacked to play Cyborg and other roles. Also, Snyder has shown continued support for Fisher, particularly after Joss Whedon took over the original Justice League film and clashed with Fisher. It would be easy to see Fisher de-aged a bit and placed into the lead role for the film. While he is 48 years old, Joe Manganiello would seemingly be a strong fit to play an established champion and the man Fisher's character is aiming to face and defeat. Perhaps Manganiello would be a guy who was once a mentor, but has now become an enemy. There are so many stories of gym drama associated with the UFC to pull from to add a level of familiarity. Team Alpha Male's fallout involving TJ Dillashaw, Cody Garbrandt, and Urijah Faber is perhaps the most noteworthy situation. In any case, this dynamic could be one direction for the story. There are a plethora of options for female leads in the film, but consider Sofia Boutella—someone else who has history with Snyder from Rebel Moon. Boutella is also a trained dancer and martial artist. That would seemingly make her a strong fit for the role—on top of her skills as an actress. If she's also a fighter in the film—even without being the main character—her presence would provide some spotlight on the female experience in the UFC. While this kind of thing isn't typically something we'd see White do, I'd be shocked if he didn't have a cameo or at least a couple of impact scenes in the film. It's pretty tough to imagine anyone doing an authentic film about the UFC without having White in it in some capacity. I'd also pencil in people like Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier, Megan Olivi, and possibly Michael Bisping, Paul Felder, Brendan Fitzgerald, and Laura Sanko. It depends on the way Snyder shoots the in-Octagon scenes, but traditionally there is some inclusion of commentary with modern combat sports films. The UFC's commentary teams have become synonymous with the product, and in order to convey the grandness of a UFC event, the crew would seemingly be needed. Last but not least, you can bet on Alalshikh being in the film—especially if there is an event in Saudi Arabia captured in the film. With the combat sports powerbroker involved, it would be a major surprise if he has no face time in the movie.

Zack Snyder Partners With UFC, Turki Alalshikh for New Film ‘Brawler'

Zack Snyder's next movie will see him team up with the UFC for a film set within the world of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The filmmaker will direct, write and executive produce 'Brawler' with fellow writers/EPs Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, with whom he worked on 'Rebel Moon.' The new movie's logline reads: 'Rising from the rough streets of Los Angeles, a young fighter gets a shot at a UFC championship, battling his inner demons as he fights for redemption.' 'Behind every great fighter is the story of how they got there,' Snyder said in a Monday statement. 'UFC is the world leader in combat sports and I'm honored to be partnering with them to tell this incredible story.' Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia and owner of The Ring Magazine, added: 'I've been a fan of Zack's work for years, his unique style — from his iconic action sequences to his sweeping visuals and intensely emotional storytelling — coupled with his humanized portrayal of deeply-flawed characters is singular, I couldn't think of a better person to partner with to bring the UFC to the big screen. The Ring Magazine, with its 103-year legacy, will support to ensure the project's success.' 'Turki Alalshikh and Zack Snyder have a shared vision to create a film about UFC,' UFC CEO Dana White agreed. 'They are both very passionate about this project to show fans what it takes to become a UFC champion. It's an incredibly ambitious project and I look forward to seeing it come to life.' Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller will also produce through Stone Quarry, with Alalshikh and UFC CCO Craig Borsari serving as additional executive producers. Snyder is repped by CAA, Sloan, Offer, Weber & Dern and ID PR. WME negotiated the deal on behalf of the UFC.
