Great British Sewing Bee's Scottish star Patrick Grant opens up on making tough show decision

The Great British Sewing Bee judge Patrick Grant has opened up about the difficulties of being on the show and making the tough decisions with fellow judge Esme Young. In July, the 11th series of The Great British Sewing Bee launched as a new group of seamsters were all eager to wow judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant. ‌ Viewers of the BBC show witnessed 12 skilled participants display their needlework abilities and battle for the crown of Britain's Best Amateur Sewer. ‌ This year, the standard has been exceptionally impressive, as Esme and Patrick have faced some challenging choices about which contestant to eliminate. ‌ Nevertheless, Patrick revealed to RadioTimes that fortunately they're typically in agreement, though he emphasised the tricky elements of the programme. The judge remarked: "There are two difficulties. There's obviously the difficulty of choosing, in my head, my order, and then there is the difficulty of squaring that with the order that Esme has in her head. ‌ "That one is less difficult because, as I say, we are mostly on the same wavelength." Patrick did disclose that there have been instances when other crew members have needed to be brought in 'to mediate and bounce ideas off'. This week, audiences will witness the surviving participants confront the fast fashion sector in Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Week, reports Wales Online. ‌ Since none of the material in the haberdashery is fresh, they'll be challenged with creating a zero-waste workwear jacket and then crafting complete ensembles from abandoned camping equipment. Featuring on The One Show this week, Patrick spoke about the forthcoming episode and explained that between 40 and 50,000 tents get abandoned at festivals. ‌ He continued: "Tents have essentially become single-use plastic. They are 100% plastic. You could use one for a weekend and leave it behind. But where does all that fabric go? "Our contestants made some amazing stuff. They have to make a festival outfit out of the tents left behind at last year's festivals." ‌ The BBC judge was full of admiration for the remaining participants, saying: "They're an amazing bunch with a brilliant eye and just the loveliest people." This series also witnessed the comeback of presenter Sara Pascoe, who stepped away from the BBC programme last year for maternity leave. Last year, viewers saw Kiell Smith-Bynoe step into the presenting role, which proved popular with audiences. The Great British Sewing Bee is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Shun plastic and use eco-friendly products, urges Collector

District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad on Saturday urged the citizens to strictly avoid plastic items and only use eco-friendly alternatives to protect the environment. He also stressed on the need for collective efforts to fight against plastic ban. The Collector attended 'Swachh Andhra-Swarna Andhra' programme organised by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) at the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (RRR) centre at Yendada Junction. Speaking at the programme, Mr. Prasad said that the government has been organising 'Swachh Andhra - Swarna Andhra' programmes across the State every third Saturday of the month to raise awareness on cleanliness. He called on citizens to support this cause in large numbers by not using single-use plastics and switch to environment-friendly alternatives. 'Single-use plastic waste often clogs drains and water bodies, leading to serious health risks during the rainy season. Sanitation workers risk their lives to remove plastic waste from drains every day. Plastics entering the ocean are consumed by fish, which eventually enter human consumption and may lead to severe diseases such as cancer,' he said. He urged the public to use alternatives like paper, cloth, jute bags, steel and glass utensils, ceramic plates and cups, and reusable water bottles. He also administered a 'Swachh Andhra Pledge' against plastic and released an awareness poster titled 'Let's End Plastic Pollution Together'. Corporator Lodagala Apparao, GVMC Additional Commissioner D.V. Ramana Murthy, Chief Medical Officer Dr. E.N.V. Naresh Kumar and others attended. Sanitation workers and NGO representatives who contributed significantly helping the city win 'Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher' award were felicitated. He later visited various stalls showcasing eco-friendly alternatives and applauded their efforts.

Egypt urges equitable funding in global plastics treaty talks - Foreign Affairs

Egypt's environment minister, Yasmine Fouad, has called for greater fairness in financing a proposed global treaty to curb plastic pollution, warning that the burden must not fall disproportionately on developing countries. Fouad raised the issue during a meeting with the European commissioner for the environment, Jessika Roswall, on the sidelines of the third United Nations (UN) Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice. The discussions come ahead of significant treaty negotiations scheduled for 5-14 August 2025 at Geneva's Palais des Nations. Egypt is concerned that 'financial resources would become a burden on developing countries or be placed on the private sector, it must stem from a shared responsibility,' Fouad said, according to Egypt's environment ministry. The treaty, which aims to establish a legally binding agreement on plastic pollution, including marine waste, has emerged as a key focus for international environmental cooperation. Fouad said progress would depend on consensus over contentious provisions, including financing and implementation. She proposed Articles 3, 6, and 11 as particularly important and called for changes to ensure that developing countries are not sidelined in access to funding or technology. Fouad also advocated creating an independent funding mechanism to support the treaty's goals rather than relying on existing bodies such as the Global Environment Facility (GEF). She said this would ease pressure on limited multilateral funds and mirror Egypt and the European Union's (EU) shared approach to financing the new global biodiversity framework. She also stressed the importance of technology transfer as part of the treaty, particularly for countries transitioning away from single-use plastic, which struggle to transition effectively due to the lack of viable alternatives. Egypt has introduced several domestic measures to address plastic waste, including its first waste management law in 2020, which contains specific provisions to regulate single-use plastics. National awareness campaigns, including the recent Qallelha (Reduce) initiative, have also been launched to curb plastic consumption. According to UN data, less than 10 percent of the seven billion tonnes of plastic waste produced to date has been recycled globally. Much of the remainder ends up in landfills or in the environment, damaging ecosystems and public health. The estimated annual economic costs are between $300 billion and $600 billion. Egypt's plastic consumption was estimated at around five million tonnes in 2022–23. According to a report from the cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC), the sector remains one of the country's largest employers, supporting more than 550,000 jobs across the value chain.
