Disability screening resumes across state after 8-month freeze
Vijayawada: Bringing long-awaited relief to thousands of physically challenged individuals, the state govt has decided to reopen online slots for disability screening under the Software for Assessment of Disabled for Access, Rehabilitation and Employment (SADAREM) from Monday.
The screening process had been on hold for the past eight months under the previous regime, citing certificate verification concerns.
Several thousands of physically disabled people are left in lurch due the delay in opening the slots for screening as they were unable to access any welfare benefits. The NDA govt briefly opened the window after coming into power and suspended it following objections from the senior officials.
The finance department has also escalated a complaint that huge amount is going into the hands of ineligible people in the form of welfare pensions and other benefits due to the possession of certificates.
Then, the state govt has decided to go for complete reverification of all the certificates and also disabilities by withholding the disbursement of pensions. In fact, family members of several people with more than 70-90 percent disability approached the local legislators and senior officials with a request to grant exemption from the reverification for such people on humanitarian grounds.

However, they could do little as finance department is firm on revival of pensions only after completion of the reverification.
Taking the demands from public representatives into consideration, the state govt finally directed the health department to resume screening of disabled people under Sadarem. The screening will be taken up two days a week in all designated hospitals across the state. The screening will continue for next three months.
