File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo June 26 (UPI) -- Nicholas Hoult says he thought David Corenswet would be the "perfect" Superman when they met during auditions for the part. The Mad Max: Fury Road actor, 35, also auditioned for the iconic role but was ultimately cast as Lex Luthor. He discussed what it was like meeting Corenswet, 31, on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday. "I walked around the corner and there was like, lots of shadows on the studio lot and then one ray of sunshine, and David had taken a seat into this ray of sunshine and was sitting there, like charging up from the sun, like Superman does, getting his power," Hoult told Diego Luna, who is guest hosting Kimmel this week. Hoult immediately noticed that Corenswet was taller than he is. "Look at his hair, look at his jawline. And then he started speaking. I shook his hand, and I was like, 'His hands are a bit bigger than me,' and then he spoke and I was like, 'Oh, his voice is a little bit deeper too'... and in that moment, whilst we were shaking hands, I was like, 'I'd be happy if this guy was Superman.' I was like, 'You're perfect for it. Really, genuinely.'" The admiration was mutual. "I've admired Nick as an actor for a long time and to get to meet him, in this context, both dressed as Clark Kent... It was wonderful," Corenswet said. "And then the day that I found out that he had agreed to play Lex Luthor, I thought, 'This may be the best thing that happens to this film because a superhero is only as interesting as their villain.'" DC Entertainment's upcoming Superman film is directed by Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn and stars Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) and Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific). Superman lands in theaters July 11.

Nicholas Hoult had an 'instinct' that he would play Lex Luthor in Superman
Nicholas Hoult had an "instinct" that he could play Lex Luthor in Superman. The 35-year-old actor is playing the Man of Steel's arch-nemesis in the forthcoming DC Universe (DCU) blockbuster and felt that he was perfect for the antagonist, even though he was auditioning for the lead role that ended up going to David Corenswet. Speaking to Empire magazine, Nicholas said: "I remember reading the script for the first time and there was a tiny little piece of my instinct that was like, 'You might be a good Lex', or, 'You might have fun playing this character.' "But I brushed it aside. I wasn't listening to my instincts, which I guess is not a good thing. So I went and did the test and enjoyed that, but then when James (Gunn) called me (and told me he wanted me for Lex Luthor), I didn't say anything at first – I just cackled! Because there was an instant flash in my brain where I went, 'Oh, you knew this would be best.' "So there was a moment of excitement, joy, thrill, and then also I'd say relief or something, where I was like, 'Oh, this has ended up how it should have done if I had kind of listened to my gut early on.'" Hoult also felt that the role of Lex Luthor provided him with the opportunity to "combine" all the things he has learnt during his recent film projects. The Nosferatu actor said: "There was something about Lex where I looked at it and (thought that)... Mishmashing all these things that I've been doing recently together, or I feel like I've learned as an actor, and grown into these last few years – all of these things combined and put into this could be a good flavour." Nicholas explained that he took inspiration from previous depictions of the villain by the late Gene Hackman during the 1970s and 1980s and Michael Rosenbaum's portrayal in the TV series Smallville. He said: "Gene's one of my all-time faves, just as an actor in general. I went back and watched Gene. "And Michael Rosenbaum, who was the first Lex I saw, growing up watching Smallville (on TV). "It's interesting when you play a character that's been played before – you're working from a different script, but it's fun to draw inspiration from all of those places." Nicholas is relishing the parts he is being able to play at this stage of his career and plans to carry on doing "unexpected things" on the big screen. The Renfield star said: "I don't have a master plan. (But) it seems like a lot of the performances that I grew up loving, or specifically when actors would go on runs of things, (it) seemed to be in their thirties and forties. "So I've always been excited about this period of my career. So, keep trying to do unexpected things. And take some risks."

Nicolas Cage calls famous Terry Wogan interview 'obnoxious' 35 years later
Nicolas Cage has called his infamous 1990 interview with Terry Wogan, where he somersaulted and stripped off, 'obnoxious.' The Oscar-winning actor, 61, is well-known for his onscreen meltdowns – from Deadfall to Leaving Las Vegas and many more – but one notorious interview trumps them all. In 1990, Cage appeared on the talk show Wogan promoting the iconic David Lynch film Wild At Heart, in which the actor stars as Sailor Ripley, who goes on the run with girlfriend Lula Fortune (Laura Dern). And Cage really was wild at heart as he was introduced on the show, immediately proceeding to do a somersault and several karate kicks. After throwing money into the audience, he finally sat down for his interview – but not without removing his t-shirt and handing it to Wogan halfway through. The bizarre momentum kept going throughout, with the National Treasure star admitting that if he hadn't become an actor, he might have enjoyed 'robbing banks' instead. Now, 35 years on, Cage has said he feels the fever-dream chat show appearance might have been a little bit 'obnoxious.' 'I remember Terry Wogan was a very nice man and I enjoyed the interview with him, although I thought I was both obnoxious and somewhat wild,' the Longlegs star told The Guardian. 'I guess it's no secret that I was promoting a movie called Wild at Heart, so I was sort of play acting to that.' The Renfield actor also elaborated on why he decided to wear nothing but a leather jacket for his talk with Wogan, who died aged 77 in 2016 of prostate cancer. 'I remember, as a child, I was in a car, a guy was walking down the street, and he had a leather jacket on and no shirt on underneath. I thought: 'Well, that's an interesting look',' Cage continued. 'I don't know why that came back to me when I went on Terry's show, but I thought, 'I'm going to create that look again.' It was incredibly absurd and irreverent. I don't have that leather jacket anymore.' It comes as Cage's latest film, bizarre thriller The Surfer, comes to cinemas. In the film, there is yet another signature wild Cage moment that sees his character killing a rat and later eating it, a moment the actor has revealed was entirely his idea. In a new interview with The Guardian, Cage confirmed that it was he who wanted to say 'Eat the rat!' before being inspired by the quality of the rubber prop to go one step further. More Trending 'I had gotten the idea from an old Billy Wilder movie called Sabrina, where Humphrey Bogart takes an olive out of a martini glass, puts it in his uncle's mouth and says: 'Eat it',' he revealed. 'I couldn't stop laughing when I saw that moment. When I saw the prop rat, I said, 'I'll put it in my pocket,' because I liked the way the rubber tail was moving,' he explained, adding that he found it 'amusing' and felt he could 'use' it in some way. Cage decided to 'channel it in more of a punk rock way than Bogart did with the olive, by shoving the rat in Pitbull's [Alexander Bertrand] mouth'. He continued: 'It was a cathartic moment. By that point in the movie, I thought my character has gone through enough suffering and that he's earned the right to go big and shove a rat in the guy's mouth.' Got a story? Nicolas Cage reveals terrifying moment he 'could have died' filming new thriller
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Hollywood icon Nicolas Cage has revealed his latest film could have killed him during a terrifying stunt. The Surfer, directed by Lorcan Finnegan, follows Cage as the eponymous Surfer who returns to his hometown by an idyllic Australian beach to purchase his family home. The beach he loves so dearly is defended from outsiders by a group of local bullies led by Scally (Julian McMahon), who take a dislking to The Surfer and his son, The Kid (Finn Little). As he desperately tries to close the deal on the house by Christmas, he becomes entangled in escalating conflicts between the town's eclectic characters. With a title like The Surfer, you can rest assured the film does indeed include the water sport – and it put the Longlegs star, 61, in a dangerous situation as he entered surfing training for the role. 'I have surfed, but every time I've attempted surfing, I've been pounded to smithereens,' he told The Hollywood Reporter. 'I surfed down on Sunset Beach. When I was trying to learn, my teacher gave me a shortboard. I said, 'Look, I want a longboard.'' However, the longboard didn't help the Pig actor as he 'just got pounded' by the waves and 'got stuck in the rip tide.' 'They said they saw my board, they call it 'tombstone,' like that triangle top. I'm climbing up the leash as I'm somersaulting, and I could have died.' He added: 'Now I have a young kid, I don't know if I want to do it anymore.' Cage is the father to August Francesca Coppola Cage, 2, whom he shares with wife Riko Shibata, as well as Kal-El Coppola, 19, with Alice Kim, and Weston Cage Coppola, 34, with Christina Fulton. It comes as another Cage flick has climbed the Netflix charts to become the ninth most-watched film of the week. Directed by The Crow filmmaker Alex Proyas, Knowing stars Cage as MIT professor John Koestler, who stumbles across a time capsule containing a seemingly prophetic string of numbers. Discovering that these numbers correlate to major disasters over the past 50 years – including September 11 and Hurricane Katrina – John is quick to notice that the list is almost at an end. With a devastating solar flare on the horizon, John realises that this impending cataclysm could be the world's last – and he faces a race against time to get himself and his son (Chandler Canterbury) to safety before it's too late. More Trending In February, his vampire flick Renfield came to Netflix, which also stars Nicholas Hoult as the titular servant to Cage's Dracula. The film follows Renfield as he attempts to extricate himself from life under horror cinema's most horrible boss. Aided by cop Rebecca (Awkwafina), Renfield navigates life as a free man for the first time – only to be drawn back into Dracula's web as the Count seeks to get his former assistant back under his thrall. The Surfer comes to UK cinemas on May 9 Got a story?
