Nicolas Cage reveals terrifying moment he 'could have died' filming new thriller

Hollywood icon Nicolas Cage has revealed his latest film could have killed him during a terrifying stunt.
The Surfer, directed by Lorcan Finnegan, follows Cage as the eponymous Surfer who returns to his hometown by an idyllic Australian beach to purchase his family home.
The beach he loves so dearly is defended from outsiders by a group of local bullies led by Scally (Julian McMahon), who take a dislking to The Surfer and his son, The Kid (Finn Little).
As he desperately tries to close the deal on the house by Christmas, he becomes entangled in escalating conflicts between the town's eclectic characters.
With a title like The Surfer, you can rest assured the film does indeed include the water sport – and it put the Longlegs star, 61, in a dangerous situation as he entered surfing training for the role.
'I have surfed, but every time I've attempted surfing, I've been pounded to smithereens,' he told The Hollywood Reporter.
'I surfed down on Sunset Beach. When I was trying to learn, my teacher gave me a shortboard. I said, 'Look, I want a longboard.''
However, the longboard didn't help the Pig actor as he 'just got pounded' by the waves and 'got stuck in the rip tide.'
'They said they saw my board, they call it 'tombstone,' like that triangle top. I'm climbing up the leash as I'm somersaulting, and I could have died.'
He added: 'Now I have a young kid, I don't know if I want to do it anymore.'
Cage is the father to August Francesca Coppola Cage, 2, whom he shares with wife Riko Shibata, as well as Kal-El Coppola, 19, with Alice Kim, and Weston Cage Coppola, 34, with Christina Fulton.
It comes as another Cage flick has climbed the Netflix charts to become the ninth most-watched film of the week.
Directed by The Crow filmmaker Alex Proyas, Knowing stars Cage as MIT professor John Koestler, who stumbles across a time capsule containing a seemingly prophetic string of numbers.
Discovering that these numbers correlate to major disasters over the past 50 years – including September 11 and Hurricane Katrina – John is quick to notice that the list is almost at an end.
With a devastating solar flare on the horizon, John realises that this impending cataclysm could be the world's last – and he faces a race against time to get himself and his son (Chandler Canterbury) to safety before it's too late. More Trending
In February, his vampire flick Renfield came to Netflix, which also stars Nicholas Hoult as the titular servant to Cage's Dracula.
The film follows Renfield as he attempts to extricate himself from life under horror cinema's most horrible boss.
Aided by cop Rebecca (Awkwafina), Renfield navigates life as a free man for the first time – only to be drawn back into Dracula's web as the Count seeks to get his former assistant back under his thrall.
The Surfer comes to UK cinemas on May 9

The 37-year-old is leading the way in the action spin-off of Keanu Reeves' iconic franchise, which hit the big screen today. In the blockbuster, directed by Len Wiseman, she played Eve Macarro, an assassin trained by the Ruska Roma who is on her own journey of revenge over her dad's murder. Unpacking a brutal sequence in which her character used a flamethrower against some bad guys, the James Bond actress explained that she became emotional during the first time she rehearsed the stunt before the cameras started rolling. 'I remember the first day the stunt team was practicing with the fire, and they told me to go do it before the shoot, and I said, 'No, no, no, I'll be fine',' she told Entertainment Weekly. 'They got the main fire guy that gets burned, and he's all covered in this sticky grease or whatever they put for protection, and they're like, 'Okay, go ahead. Just burn him.' And I did, and I started crying. 'It was really emotional,' Ana said of the 'intense' scene. 'I've never seen anyone burning, even though it's fake. Thankfully, she was able to gather herself quickly, and continued on with the rehearsal. 'Then I was fine,' she laughed. 'Then I burned like a hundred people. I'm glad I practiced the day before, and I cried the day before. 'But it's amazing to see what [the stunt team] do – I can't believe you guys put yourself through this. It's unbelievable.' 'The fire scene was risky, but we did it,' she added. 'It was all done the right way, and everyone was super careful, and it turned out to be an amazing experience.' After years of waiting, Ballerina is finally in cinemas now and has been met with rave reviews from fans and critics alike – it currently commands a huge audience Rotten Tomatoes score of 93% compared to a critics ranking of 72%. Many on the platform heaped praise on Ana's efforts at leading the latest instalment of the franchise alongside Keanu's John Wick. Andreas Udland wrote: 'Super entertaining. Renewed Or Cancelled? Mercy for None is the latest Netflix K-drama, boasting compelling characters and a bloody, action-packed storyline. This one has been quite the rollercoaster ride over the season! If you've been following this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Well, wonder no more. Here's what we know about a renewal: What is Mercy for None about? 11 years after going into hiding, an ex-gangster called Nam Gi-jun returns to Seoul's criminal underworld to find out the truth about his brother's death — and get some sweet, sweet revenge. His weapon of choice? A baseball bat. We have ongoing coverage of Mercy for None on the site, including recaps for every episode. You can find those HERE! Has Mercy for None been renewed for season 2? At the time of writing, Netflix have not renewed Mercy for None for season 2. Generally Netflix would gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly. Other times, it can take months before a decision over a show's future is made. So far, Mercy for None has had a good reaction online from critics and audiences alike. Given the way this show is set up, and the ending we receive, we're predicting that this will not be renewed for a second season. Having said that, we do also know that completion rate is a massive metric for these streamers so that could play a pivotal role here. However, it's also rare for these Netflix K-dramas to be renewed – especially when they're labelled as Limited Series like this one is! Given most Korean dramas are reserved to one season, it's rare to find these renewed. With the rare exception of ongoing Netflix shows (Love ft. Marriage and Divorce, Hospital Playlist etc.) then it seems unlikely that this one will be renewed. Having said that though, we have seen Taxi Driver and Tale of the Nine Tailed renewed recently, alongside Alchemy of Souls too. Given how steady the ratings are for this series, could we see this one buck the trend? It seems very unlikely that Mercy for None will buck the trend. There is always the possibility that the actors return for a follow-up for a sequel or a spin-off featuring the same characters but considering all of this, we believe this will not be renewed. TV fans have days to binge BBC's 'best crime drama' before return
One of the BBC's best crime dramas is returning for a second season this weekend. The Gold is based on one of Britain's biggest ever real-life heists, the 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery, in which six armed men stole £26million in gold from a security depot near Heathrow. The majority of the gold was never recovered and it's understood most gold jewellery bought in the UK from 1984 onwards contains traces of the stolen stuff. The brilliant ensemble cast is led by Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville as detective Brian Boyce, who sets up a police task force to route out the gold from the criminal underworld of south London. With all six episodes of the second season set to arrive on iPlayer this weekend, TV fans have just a couple of days to binge the first season if they missed it in 2023. The show defies the normal heist drama fare by plunging into that robbery in the first scene. The robbers only expected to find a small amount of currency, but chanced upon an amount of gold that would now be equivalent to around £100m. The rest of the first episode, and drama as a whole, then follows the hunt to find the gold before its melted down and vanishes – which most of it did. In the drama they do so with the help of gangster Kenneth Noye, played by Slow Horses' Jack Lowden, and a crooked solicitor, played by Dominic Cooper, who uses the cash to buy up land around the London Docklands. When the show first aired it was hailed as not only British TV at its best, but a modern crime classic and The Gold was nominated for a Best Drama Bafta in 2024. TV fans took to X – then Twitter – when the drama first aired to praise the the tremendous episodes and the show's knockout cast. @charlieray47 wrote that the show was an 8/10, tweeting: 'Stunningly shot, well-paced series that had me hooked. A gripping real story with a masterclass performance from Hugh Bonneville. 'One of the best British dramas I've seen in a long time. Only critique was a slightly rushed finale but thoroughly enjoyed.'
