Steven Ogg: 'Revival' character is saving town from Devil's children

Photo by Lavivier Productions/SYFY NEW YORK, July 3 (UPI) -- Snowpiercer, Better Call Saul and The Walking Dead alum Steven Ogg says he wanted to be part of the supernatural drama Revival because it allowed him to play Blaine Abel, a man who finds purpose in a crisis. "His father was a preacher, so, early in his life, he kind of rejected all of that," Ogg, 51, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. Instead of leading a church congregation, Blaine does odd jobs to pay the bills and hosts a radio show in his down time. "On Revival Day, when the dead come back to life, literally, for him, everything becomes very myopic in that moment. This is my goal now. My goal is to save people from the Revivers, which he considers to be the Devil's children. So, his faith and everything he had as a youth, growing up, just floods back into him and it is almost like he's ironically becoming his dad," Ogg said. "He believes he's doing the Lord's service," he added. "This becomes his calling." Created by Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce, the comic book adaptation airs Thursdays on Syfy. It follows the residents of a small Wisconsin town where the recently dead are coming back to life and wreaking havoc. It stars David James Elliott and Melanie Scrofano as the father-daughter, sheriff-deputy duo of Wayne and Dana Cypress. Romy Weltman plays Dana's resurrected sister Em and Andy McQueen plays Ibrahim, a CDC scientist sent to figure out what is going on. Despite its extraordinary circumstances, the show is both funny and scary, while maintaining emotional authenticity as it explores issues of grief, community, addiction and isolation. "The tone is dark. It looks visually stunning. The characters are very interesting and reveal themselves consistently. It's consistently pulling back layers," Ogg said. "What Melanie does with her sense of humor and the portrayal of the character, I think, is unique. I'm not a huge TV watcher, but I certainly think it's different than things I have seen or know of." Ogg said he thinks viewers who lived through the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns or who have felt ostracized because they march to a different drummer may connect to the show's characters and themes. "It's very interesting how people deal with differences," he added. "Are we going to come together? Are people going to meet in the middle? Or are we just completely divisive? I think it's going to be fun to continue to see how that's explored on the show." Although Ogg has starred in some of the most famous graphic novel adaptations of the 21st century, he insists he is not a real-life connoisseur of the medium, other than loving Alan Moore's Jack the Ripper tale, From Hell. "I think it's just this face, maybe," he laughed about why the universe seems to bring him so many jobs based on this specific type of visual, printed storytelling. "When I'm not on a project, I'll read five or six novels in a week. I read copious amounts, but graphic novels, I've never been into," Ogg said. "Give me a George Eliiot, 1,000-page novel, I can sink my teeth into that, but graphic novels with the pictures? Even as a kid, I never looked at comic books," he added. "I love art and art books. I can sit and go through an entire Taschen Egon Schiele book and go page by page, but the combination [of art and narrative]? I don't know, with graphic novels."

REVIVAL's Romy Weltman on Becoming Em and Working With Melanie Scrofano
One miraculous day in Wisconsin, the dead rise from their graves. The town of Wausau hurtles into chaos in the wake of 'Revival Day' as its residents attempt to adapt to this new normal. Among the Revived is Martha 'Em' Cypress (Romy Weltman), younger sister to Officer Dana Cypress (Melanie Scrofano), who scrambles to piece together the mystery surrounding her death, which now looks an awful lot like murder. Recently, I had the privilege of chatting with Romy about how she approached playing Em on Revival , what we can expect for the rest of the season, developing a sisterly bond with Melanie and more. Romy Weltman REVIVAL — 'Keeping Up Appearances' Season 1 Episode 2 — Pictured: (l-r) Melanie Scrofano as Dana Cypress, Romy Weltman as Martha 'Em' Cypress — (Photo by: Naomi Peters/Lavivier Productions/SYFY) Melody McCune: I've been loving the show so far. At the start of all this, what would you say stood out to you about the source material? What drew you into this world? Romy Weltman: Oh my gosh. Honestly, I wish I had a clear answer for you, but it really was everything: the genre, the writing. I love an adaptation when done correctly. Just getting to be a part of a universe that already was preexisting, that's huge for me as well. MM: Besides diving into the comics, how did you approach Em? How did you prepare to play this character? RW: Everything happened pretty quickly with this for me. So, the preparation was also just trusting the process. A lot of what came from me was doing research on Em's backstory in terms of OI (Osteogenesis Imperfecta — also called brittle bone disease). Making sure I understood what OI was and how it impacts people's lives. Then, [the] same with drug addiction, given her addiction to oxycodone. I wanted to make sure I was representing everything correctly and was able to be part of this conversation. In terms of taking care of Em's backstory, that's really what I focused on. And growing with her [over the] course of the season was part of my preparation as well. RW: Aw, thank you. That was just one of the coolest experiences ever. Mel is exactly who you'd expect her to be, but even better. When I met her, it was an instant connection, and [I loved] getting to work with her and learn from her as well. This was my first leading role on a series. MM: Congratulations. RW: Thank you so much. There's no lead like Melanie Scrofano. Having her hold my hand the entire way through was so special. I got to learn from a really strong, empowering woman. Through that, I hope that resonated on screen, that Em was starting to learn from Dana as well. I think your close bond definitely resonates on screen. I'm going to get into spoiler territory here since episode three just aired. Em is starting to piece together the mystery of her murder, and as she's jumping off that bridge, she remembers Blaine (Steven Ogg) was there the night she died. What can we expect going forward from her story and the investigation as it unfolds? RW: The biggest thing you can expect is answers, but also potentially more confusion along the way. Something about Revival — without spoiling anything moving forward — is that everyone knows each other. That's a little teaser I'll give you. With Em's journey, we're going to find this young woman who's finally allowed to really explore herself and give herself permission to make mistakes and live a life she never got to live before. RELATED: TV Review: Resident Alien Season 4 To Feel Alive MM: Piggybacking off that, she tells Rhodey (Kaleb Horn) in episode three that she had to die to really feel alive. What was it like getting to tap into that shift in Em as she steps outside her comfort zone? RW: That line is the most beautiful line ever. Our writers are incredible. Aaron [B. Koontz] and Luke [Boyce], our creators and showrunners, said early on [that] this line is really what Em's journey and story are built around. In that moment, she realizes it while sitting on the bridge next to this cute boy. The special thing about Rhodey is that he didn't know Em prior to Revival Day, so he never knew this version of her that she was so stuck in, based on other people's perspectives. Just sitting there and realizing, 'Life isn't scary anymore. It's not bad anymore. It's me against the world at this point, and potentially could be us against the world at this point.' We really did shoot that scene on a bridge. Kaleb Horn — he plays Rhodey — and I were both harnessed in. We did not actually jump into the water, though. MM: Oh, good. RW: I want to make that clear. But I was thinking, 'Wow, I'm really living my dream. And I feel like I'm just starting to live hers.' What was it like getting to film those sequences? RW: I'm so happy you asked. Those are just the coolest things ever. To be transparent, I'm 5'1″. I'm quite petite. This is why Em is such a cool character. I got to play this physically strong character because the consequences aren't the same for her as they would be for Romy in real life. It was cool getting to learn about my own body through those sequences. Max White, our stunt coordinator, is incredible. He was so open to allowing me to do as much as possible, so I didn't have a stunt double for either of those scenes, which is cool. I do have a stunt [double] later on, which I want to make clear for certain things in this season, but for those specific scenes, they let me go for it. Through that, I got to learn so much. RELATED: Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week: SurrealEstate 's Susan Ireland There was something so freeing about getting beaten up and not worrying. Obviously, I'm not really getting beaten up. The beautiful thing about that, too, is the partnership we were working with, and everyone I had the opportunity to work with has been so awesome. RW: I'd say the biggest one is that I journal a lot, the same as Em. I don't journal as much as she does in the first season, but that's something I keep close to me. I'm also the youngest in my family. For so long, I've wanted people to see me as an adult. We tend to fall into how people make us feel. I can relate to Em feeling small sometimes, and not being sure why. Then, also getting to power through that and learn and grow through that is awesome, so those are big similarities as well. RELATED: Our 15 Favorite Wynonna Earp Moments My brother and I have a similar age gap to Em and Dana. Also, Em, similarly to me, probably more so when I was a bit younger, feels so much. I don't think she knows how to express it to the people she cares about. That is difficult to navigate growing up. She has all these people she could turn to, but she doesn't know how. That's the thing — just growing up in general. MM: Describe the rest of this season using three words. RW: Bloody. Heartfelt. Revived. What Romy Is Watching MM: Love it. All right, last question. I like to ask this question to everyone I interview. Are you watching anything interesting right now? RW: Well, I'm watching Revival . MM: Of course. RW: I'm also watching The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives . MM: I haven't seen that yet. RW: I am not a reality show girl, but I am obsessed. I also just started the show Paradise . You know what? RW: Please throw that in there because I am such a Tim Rozon fan, and I actually really love the show. Definitely one that I watch to get into the sci-fi genre a bit more. I get a kick out of the show. MM: It's a great gateway to sci-fi. I got to chat with Tim and Melanie last year for Wynonna Earp: Vengeance , and that was really fun. RW: They're both just the coolest people ever. I had the pleasure of meeting Tim on a film called Terror Train . Mel had actually seen my demo. Tim and I have a small two-second fling in that movie. Calgary's Steven Ogg returns to the dead (sort of) in Revival
Steven Ogg first heard about the new supernatural-horror series Revival when he received a flattering note from co-creator Aaron B. Koontz, who told him that he wanted the Calgary-raised actor to take on the role of the wonderfully named Blaine Abel. Article content It's the sort of note that every actor would love to receive. Article content 'He actually wrote a really lovely letter to me,' says Ogg, in an interview with Postmedia from Montreal. 'I find it interesting when people approach with, 'Well, I know I could never afford you,' or 'You're too busy.' Of course, neither is the truth. But he had written a letter saying he was a big fan of my work and wanted to chat with me about if I was available. It was just a really lovely letter that moved me to tears, with him being so gracious and lovely. I spoke to him and he described the concept of the show, and then he also said this character was a preacher, a preacher's son. That opportunity to play a preacher, I was already interested. They had my interest with that.' Article content Article content Revival, which was filmed in New Brunswick and is currently airing Thursdays on Syfy, is based on the comic book series of the same name by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. It's a novel take on the undead subgenre. In a small Wisconsin town, the recently deceased are resurrected on Revival Day and appear to maintain their memories and personalities. So they are not really the 'undead,' but mysterious 'Revivers' who divide the small town. At the centre of the show is a murder mystery that finds our protagonist, single mother and cop Dana Cypress, played by Wynonna Earp's Melanie Scrofano, investigating the death of her troubled sister Em, played by Romy Weltman. Em, like many of the recently departed, doesn't stay dead for long. Article content Article content While the Hollywood Reporter described the series as Syfy's midwestern zombie mystery, the Revivers are not the mushy-brained nuisances of the variety Ogg faced as Walking Dead chief antagonist Simon in seasons 6 through 8 of AMC's The Walking Dead. Nevertheless, Blaine Abel considers them to be demons and the work of Satan. He begins to attract a cult-like following among the townsfolk and, at least as of episode 3, is setting the stage for what he calls a 'holy war.' Article content For now, it's hard to tell if Blaine will become a full-blown villain in the show. Ogg has a talent for playing bad guys, of course. He not only played Simon in The Walking Dead, but also a murderous synthetic android named Rebus in HBO's Westworld. He is also adept at playing characters that reside in a morally ambiguous grey zone, such as Pike, the former criminal turned rebel leader in TNT's runaway-train sci-fi series Snowpiercer. Whatever the case, Ogg traded in his trademark facial hair for a stringy mullet to play Blaine, and he manages to exude maximum creepiness in the role. Article content 'We collaborated quite easily and effortlessly, and he became more of this character who, as you will see, progressed throughout the series, and literally and figuratively becomes bigger,' Ogg says. 'Revival Day, for Blaine, gives him this mission in life to save souls, essentially. The Revivers are the devil's children for him. So it really brings back this passion and devoutness to a cause. That all appealed to me. When you get to speak verse from the Bible, it's Shakespeare in a sense with the language. So all of that was super exciting for me.'

REVIVAL Recap: (S01E02) Keeping Up Appearances
Revival Season 1 Episode 2, 'Keeping Up Appearances,' effectively builds on that jaw-dropping cliffhanger from the series premiere. It fleshes out core character dynamics, introduces a few new supporting players and lays the groundwork for what's to come. I'm digging the Wynonna Earp / Preacher vibes I'm getting from this series. Bring on more narrative weirdness (and the not-zombies). RELATED: Read our recap of the previous Revival episode, 'Don't Tell Dad' Revival, 'Keeping Up Appearances' We open with a flashback — Em (Romy Weltman) wakes up on Revival Day. She's near a waterfall. She coughs up water and the same wedding band we saw in the series premiere. Bewildered, Em returns to the bridge. She discovers one of her boots and her coat. Then, Em returns to her dorm. Her roommate, Kay (Maia Jae), is watching the news, which so happens to feature Sheriff Wayne Cypress (David James Elliott). Em makes a beeline for her room. Three days later, Em emerges from her room. She heads into the bathroom, crushes up some pills and snorts them. However, she can't get high. Em does this repeatedly and gets the same result — zero high. Frustrated, Em punches the bathroom mirror. Kay reveals her plan to stay with her parents and ride out the quarantine. Regeneration After she leaves, Em notices the gash on her hand from punching the mirror has healed. Weird. She grabs a Swiss Army Knife and cuts her palm, only for said cut to close almost instantly. The news segment on the screen features Wayne getting increasingly irritated as May (Katharine King So) asks questions he doesn't — or perhaps can't — answer. RELATED: Revival : Co-Creators Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce on Crafting 'Weird' New Series Now, we're back in the present. Dana (Melanie Scrofano) is in full-on panic mode. Em is still holding the scythe while looming over Arlene's (Nicky Guadagni) corpse. Backup has arrived. Dana and Em attempt to get their stories straight. Dana urges Em to tell the officers that she killed Arlene, not her. Arlene just so happened to be a violent Reviver. Meanwhile, Cooper (Hudson Wurster) stumbles upon a peculiar display in the woods. He also trips on what looks like a premeditated trap. However, someone helps Cooper to his feet. This is Blaine Abel (Steven Ogg). He's an enigma. Blaine encourages Cooper to find his way back to civilization. He eventually reunites with Wayne. REVIVAL — 'Keeping Up Appearances' Season 1 Episode 2 — Pictured: (l-r) David James Elliott as Sheriff Wayne Cypress, Hudson Wurster as Cooper Cypress — (Photo by: Lavivier Productions/SYFY) Anxiety Outside the Dittmans' barn, paramedics check out Em. She has a panic attack, so they take her to the hospital. Dana chats with J.P. Brissett (Glen Gould). Both agree it's best to keep the sheriff far away from this situation. Upon discovering the ambulance with Em is en route to the hospital, Dana makes a beeline for it. They can't discover Em's a Reviver. RELATED: Revival : Check Out 9 First-Look Photos From Melanie Scrofano-Led Series Next, Ibrahim (Andy McQueen) and Carla (Paige Evans) prepare to perform an autopsy on Arlene. What makes her different from the other Revivers? After Ibrahim and Carla step out of the room, we see Arlene isn't exactly dead. In fact, the top of her head is already regenerating, and her eyes are open… Meanwhile, the Cypress family reunites. Wayne chews Dana out for taking Em with her on the job. Of course, Dana gives her father a taste of his own medicine when she learns he temporarily lost Cooper. Em is fed up with both of them and storms off. REVIVAL — 'Keeping Up Appearances' Season 1 Episode 2 — Pictured: (l-r) Melanie Scrofano as Dana Cypress, Romy Weltman as Martha 'Em' Cypress — (Photo by: Naomi Peters/Lavivier Productions/SYFY) Red Alert Then, Wayne orders Ibrahim and Deputy Rogers (Aryelle Morrison) to keep a lid on the Arlene thing. Oh, and no one talks to the press. He also orders Dana to take Cooper home. May enters the room. Dana urges Rogers to take Cooper to the cafeteria while she handles May. We know how Wayne feels about the media. May asks Dana for the truth. What's going on? RELATED: Revival : The Dead Have Rejoined the Living in Official Trailer Elsewhere, Wayne and Ibrahim discover that Arlene is MIA, and the guard stationed outside the room is dead. Wayne calls for reinforcements. The alarm blares. Dana makes a break for Wayne's location, with May hot on her heels. Dana spies Arlene as she kills a hospital employee. Her head is in one piece again. Dana urges May to get the hell out of Dodge before she's next on Arlene's murder list. Then, Arlene wanders into the maternity ward. Wayne finds her with a baby. Unfortunately, she speeds away with said baby before Wayne and his officers can react. They give chase. Wayne and the others wind up in the parking garage, guns raised. However, there, they discover Blaine, who's holding the baby. Arlene is nowhere to be found. Wayne asks about Arlene, but Blaine recites some vaguely ominous, apocalyptic-esque language. REVIVAL — 'Keeping Up Appearances' Season 1 Episode 2 — Pictured: (l-r) Carla Morel as Carly Morel, Andy McQueen as Ibrahim Ramin — (Photo by: Naomi Peters/Lavivier Productions/SYFY) The Truth Later, Wayne and Ibrahim chat with Mayor Dillisch (Conrad Coates) about Arlene. Wayne believes this supports his case for locking up all the Revivers. Ibrahim reminds Wayne that the cops have a history of mistreating and abusing marginalized people. I love that Revivers are a clever tool to explore this, and how underprivileged or even those deemed different are ostracized by society. Not all the Revivers are like Arlene. However, Ibrahim concedes that they should pool their resources to capture Arlene. RELATED: TV Review: Resident Alien Season 4 Then, Dana searches Em's dorm. She discovers a bevy of creepy drawings adorning Em's bedroom walls. She also finds Em's stash of pills. Dana confronts Em about it. Em discloses that she's clean — she can't get high anymore since coming back from the dead. Dana wants to know how Em got her hands on 1,000 pills. Em claims she bought them from the pain clinic. The conversation pivots to Em's death. Dana tearfully asks if Em overdosed. Em knows she didn't. However, the other details are admittedly fuzzy. Dana urges Em to tell her something . Em reveals she went to the bridge on Revival Day because it was their mom's birthday. Then, she woke up near the waterfall. To Solve a Murder Dana really wants to solve her sister's death. Well, it's looking more like murder. She persuades Em to join her at the station for a hot minute. Dana plans to show her face before the pair can go to the bridge to retrace Em's steps. Em reluctantly agrees to this plan. RELATED: 10 Out-of-This-World Predictions for Resident Alien Season 4 At the station, Dana encourages Em to get them both chocolate from the vending machine while she joins Wayne in a meeting. Instead, Em takes Dana's keys and steals her vehicle. Meanwhile, Dana approaches Deputy McCray (Nathan Dales) — and his rat tail — with questions about Em's pill stash. McCray identifies them as oxy. One would normally deal them or steal them. He gives Dana a file on those in Wausau arrested for drug possession before returning to his game. I can't believe Daryl and Mrs. McMurray work together now. Later, Dana realizes that Em stole her car. The only one available in the parking lot is Ibrahim's vehicle. At the same time, Nithiya (Gia Sandhu) gets ready to go out to eat with her husband, Aaron (Gianpaolo Venuta). So, he was cheating on his wife, who has cancer, with his student? Ew. Anyway, they head into Nella's. We see Em follow them inside. Dana explains that Em has a rare disease — her bones break very easily. Because of this, she's lived a sheltered life. At Nella's, Em follows Aaron to the bathroom. He tells her that it's over. Em isn't there to rekindle their affair. She wants to know what happened at the bridge. She doesn't remember, well, anything. RELATED: 10 Predictions for The Ark Season 3 Aaron reveals he blocked her phone and email after she inundated him with texts, calls and emails. He didn't want her to blow their cover. Em doesn't recall sending those. Aaron learns that Em is a Reviver, and, like Dana, he jumps to conclusions about her death. He assumes she took her own life based on the aforementioned texts, calls and emails. Oh, and the wedding band she coughed up? It's not his. Em apologizes before leaving him. Next, in the bar, Em overhears a patron talk smack about Revivers. She declares that they were supposed to die, so they should've stayed dead. Em whirls around and punches her. The woman retaliates. She proceeds to beat the snot out of Em. Em asks her if that's all she's got … with a face covered in blood. Be My Escape Elsewhere, Dana tells Ibrahim about the accident. Two years ago, she and Em were in a car accident with their mother. Unfortunately, their mom died, and Em was behind the wheel. The family hasn't recovered from it. RELATED: Read our Wynonna Earp recaps Then, Nella (Lanette Ware) calls Dana. Dana learns about Em's bar fight. A man named Rhodey (Kaleb Horn) escorted her out of the pub. Outside, Rhodey reveals he knows she's a Reviver. Why? Because he's one, too. Rhodey gives Em a flyer for an upcoming show with his band, November Dismember (sick moniker). Em grabs a black hoodie from Dana's car and leaves behind a chocolate bar with the November Dismember flyer. She also discards her phone before Rhodey drives them away. I Know Who Did It Ibrahim drops Dana off at the bar. She tells him they should do this again — hang out. These two are cute together. Dana discovers a note from Em along with the chocolate. Em claims she needs space for a while, but she's okay. She'll reach out in due time. Melanie Scrofano Returns to Syfy to Investigate Atypical Zombies in ‘Revival' Trailer
'Wynonna Earp' star Melanie Scrofano is returning to Syfy, this time to investigate atypical zombies in 'Revival.' In the trailer for 'Revival,' which premieres Thursday, June 12, Scrofano stars as a detective investigating what a rural Wisconsin town has dubbed 'Revival Day,' a miraculous day which saw the recently deceased suddenly rise from their graves. 'Hello, officer, I don't know what's going on,' a man emerging from a dark cemetery says to Scrofano, who looks onward at the deceased, horrified. Meanwhile, Scrofano is dealing with her own drama at home, as her daughter returns after going missing. 'Em, no one's seen you for weeks — dad's been freaking out; the dead have come back to life,' the detective tells her daughter. While the revived are not your typical zombies, the town quickly has their guard up, with leadership telling locals to report the whereabouts of the revived 'immediately to authorities,' and scientists discover that reviver tissue enables their cellular structure to regenerate, leading to a particularly spooky encounter for Scrofano. Though the revived look and act the same as they were when they were alive, there's something off about them, with one pair of parents telling authorities the child who returned as their recently murdered daughter is 'not our daughter.' 'She came back wrong,' the father says. The official logline for 'Revival' is as follows: 'On one miraculous day in rural Wisconsin, the recently deceased suddenly rise from their graves. But this is no zombie story as the 'revived' appear and act just like they once were. When local officer and single mother Dana Cypress is unexpectedly thrown into the center of a brutal murder mystery of her own, she's left to make sense of the chaos amidst a town gripped by fear and confusion where everyone, alive or undead, is a suspect.'
