Sainsbury's launches UK supermarket war with budget brand and reduces 800 items
A major UK supermarke has now reduced 800 products in its Aldi Price Match campaign to attract more shoppers as the cost of living crisis takes effect Sainsbury's has added over 100 products to its Aldi Price Match campaign, totalling 800 products which it claims is more than any UK retailer. Bills are rising, and many households are struggling to make ends meet whilst still being able to have some sort of social life and save money. Now with the warmer temperatures and summer around the corner, beloved supermarket Sainsbury's is trying to compete with the budget brand. And shoppers should be able to notice a difference now, as from April 23 the 'supercharge summer value' includes summer favourites, picnic essentials and household essentials. For the first time, the initiative will also include some alcoholic beverages, including red, white, and sparkling wines priced matched to Aldi's. The supermarket is also cutting prices on items such as shower gel, hand wash, period care and cotton pads. Richard Crampton, Sainsbury's Commercial Director, Fresh and Convenience said: 'With household costs going up, we're working tirelessly to keep prices low for customers when doing their big shop at Sainsbury's. With the biggest ever Aldi Price Match, we're introducing hot weather favourites such as dips, ice cubes and fizz as well as family staples such as shower gel, cotton wool and period care, ensuring shoppers' budgets can go even further this summer.' The Aldi Price Match is also part of a wider saving strategy from Sainsbury's, aiming to attract customers to do their weekly shopping. This includes Nectar Prices on over 9,000 products, tailored discounts for loyalty members and Low Everyday Prices on over 1,000 big brand products. Price matching refers to matching a lower product price from a store in a competitive market. By doing so, it helps retailers to build a relationship with their customers, by ensuring that they're getting the best products at the cheapest price. The initiative has become common practice among the Big Four supermarkets ( Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons) as the cost-of-living crisis has led shoppers to seek out the cheapest products to save money. Meanwhile, Asda axed the Aldi Price Match Campaign in January 2025 after a year, leaving Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's as the three remaining supermarkets. Instead, Asda launched a new 'Rollback' scheme, reducing the cost of more than 4,000 products.

Sainsbury's launches 'biggest ever' Aldi price match with over 100 new items
Sainsbury's has ramped up its price match war with Aldi in a bid to save shoppers money. Adding over 100 new items, it is now said to be offering "more than any other retailer." The supermarket's price match scheme with the budget German rival first launched in 2021. It followed numerous other retailers that made the same decision in an attempt to attract customers with lower prices. As of Wednesday, April 23, the initiative with Sainsbury's is now said to offer 800 popular and staple products, making it "the biggest ever Aldi price match" on the market. The latest addition has price-matched a selection of family essentials that are a staple of the weekly shop. This includes everyday items such as shower gel, hand wash and cotton wool. Shoppers will also find great value on everyday items including bacon, sausages, feta, and pet food. Meanwhile, summer picnic favourites such as quiche, flavourful dips, sausage rolls and more are included in the price match scheme. There's also a few brand new additions, as the Aldi Price Match now offers period products for the very first time. Another first will be prosecco, champagne and cava, as the supermarket has expanded its wines and sparkling options that are perfect for summer evenings. Richard Crampton, Sainsbury's Commercial Director – Fresh and Convenience said: "With household costs going up, we're working tirelessly to keep prices low for customers when doing their big shop at Sainsbury's. "With the biggest ever Aldi Price Match, we're introducing hot weather favourites such as dips, ice cubes and fizz as well as family staples such as shower gel, cotton wool and period care, ensuring shoppers budgets can go even further this summer." News of the Aldi Price Match expansion comes after Sainsbury's expanded the initiative into its smaller branches for the very first time at the end of last year, offering 200 'go-to' staples across 1,400 stores. However, earlier this year, we reported that Sainsbury's had reduced its price match scheme by 115 products from November 2024 to February 2025. Many cut items were included in the supermarket's own-brand labels, alongside everyday staples and food. It followed a similar move made by Tesco. The fellow supermarket pulled 150 products from its own price match with the German rival in February following a change in its methodology that decided what products could be included. While many retailers began to offer products price matched to Aldi in a bid to attract customers amidst rising prices, Asda confirmed at the start of this year that it had axed its own initiative to focus more on its own great prices. We previously reported that the supermarket giant "phased out" its price match scheme to relaunch its iconic 'Rollback' offer . Launched alongside popular fitness influencer Joe Wicks, it provides shoppers with over 4,000 price cuts with an average saving of 25 percent.

Tesco and Asda have both reduced the number of items in their Aldi price match schemes this year, leaving fewer savings on offer. While Sainsbury's had also trimmed its list earlier in the year, this latest move marks a strong return to value-focused competition. The Aldi Price Match is just one of several ways Sainsbury's is helping customers save. It comes after a number of supermarkets have scaled back their Aldi price match schemes, as they struggled to keep up with the ultra-cheap supermarket. Back in February, Asda said it would no longer run the offer and instead launched a new "Rollback" scheme which saw it reduce the cost of over 4,000 products. In the same month ,Sainsbury's said it would reduce the number of products offered in the scheme. Tesco also removed over 100 products from its Aldi Price Match scheme. Morrisons also runs an Aldi and Lidl price matching scheme for its customers. It comes after Sainsbury's price squeeze earlier this year, when the retailer quietly cut its Aldi Price Match list by 75 items, dropping from 681 products in November to just 606. The move followed a similar rollback from Tesco, which also scaled back its own price match offer. MORE WAYS TO SAVE The Aldi Price Match is part of a wider savings strategy from Sainsbury's. Sainsbury's adds 100 products to its Aldi Price Match range
Sainsbury's has added more than 100 products to its Aldi Price Match lines, as supermarkets ramp up their quest to lure in shoppers. Sainsbury's is now offering around 800 products price-matched to Aldi in its stores, which, it claims, is 'more than any other retailer.' Among other products, bacon, pork pies, sausages, shower gels, handwashes, cotton wool, period products, houmous, tzatziki, certain wines and ice cubes are now price-matched with Aldi, Sainsbury's said. Sainsbury's launched Aldi Price Match in its convenience stores in November and claimed it was the first grocer to do so. As well as Aldi price-matching, Sainsbury's has over 9,000 products in its Nectar prices range, which anyone with its loyalty card can access. Richard Crampton, Sainsbury's commercial director of fresh and convenience, said: 'With household costs going up, we're working tirelessly to keep prices low for customers when doing their big shop.' He added: 'With the biggest ever Aldi Price Match, we're introducing hot weather favourites such as dips, ice cubes and fizz as well as family staples such as shower gel, cotton wool and period care, ensuring shoppers budgets can go even further this summer.' The expansion comes despite rival grocer Asda having axed its Aldi and Lidl price matching scheme earlier this year. In February, Sainsbury's reduced the number of products covered by its Aldi price match campaign, after Tesco axed more than 100 items in its scheme in the same month. However, Sainsbury's has now scaled-up its Aldi price matching scheme and has doubled down on its food-first mission. This week, Sainsbury's confirmed it planned to shut its remaining in-store patisserie, hot food and pizza counters 'by early summer.' In January, Sainsbury's announced plans to cut 3,000 jobs and revealed that all its in-store cafes would be closing. At the time, Sainsbury's said it was enduring a 'particularly challenging cost environment.' On 17 April, Sainsbury's told shareholders to expect profits to fall or flatline this year. The chain, which is Britain's second biggest supermarket, expects its income to fall by £1billion this year as it ramps up investment in lowering grocery prices for shoppers. Chief executive Simon Roberts said the group had invested £1billion into lowering price for shoppers over the past four years. Earlier this month, Tesco conceded that it could take a significant hit if it is forced to cut prices after Asda revealed it would reduce its prices for shoppers in a bid to boost its fortunes.
