Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam undergoes surgery after knee injury at Bells Beach

After injuring his knee at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach held in April in Australia, Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam has undergone surgery and begun the long road to recovery. In an Instagram post shared with his fans and followers on Wednesday, he announced that he had «TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) surgery», a procedure where the bony prominence at the front of the tibia (shin bone) is moved forward and secured in its new position. «After six weeks of waiting, my knee was finally ready for surgery», he wrote, adding, «It ended up being a bit more complicated than expected, but I was ready to face it». Boukhiam, who had the surgery at a sports clinic in Mérignac, France, said his «rehabilitation hasn't started yet, but the road to recovery begins now», promising to share updates along the way. His knee injury happened just after the first-round heat of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, as he was paddling back to shore. «My leg got stuck in the reef and a wave broke right behind me», he explained on Instagram. «Getting a major injury, again, and during a contest I felt so ready for, just breaks me», he sadly shared right after the incident. Boukhiam, who had to withdraw from the event, said the injury hit him hard. «With everything I've already been through, it honestly hits deep».

Hawaii surfers rise in WSL rankings after Bells Beach

Over the weekend, Hawai'i surfers made waves at the World Surf League's Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in Australia, with standout performances from Gabriela Bryan and Seth Moniz. Kaua'i's Bryan climbed to No. 1 in the world rankings following a fifth-place finish, earning the yellow jersey at the halfway point of the Championship Tour season. It marks a major milestone for the 21-year-old, who has been consistently strong in 2024. On the men's side, O'ahu's Moniz vaulted four spots in the rankings to No. 18 after a season-best, ninth-place finish. His performance was highlighted by a full-rotation aerial in the Round of 16 that earned a 15.70 — one of the highest-scoring waves of the event. 'Yeah, I was kind of just having a shocker in the beginning,' Moniz said. 'I knew I just had to go for it. Everyone is really good right now. I've been having pretty good free surfs and kind of working on my airs a lot, so I felt pretty confident.' 'It's been a tricky year for me,' he added. 'I feel like I've been surfing really well but just not putting it together in heats. So that felt really nice — kind of a big confidence booster.' Next up for Bryan, Moniz and the rest of the Hawai'i contingent on tour is the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro, set for May 3–13 in Queensland, Australia. Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam's Rip Curl Pro ends in agony with knee injury

Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam's run at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Australia, came to a painful end after he sustained a serious knee injury while exiting the water following his heat. Boukhiam, who placed last in Heat 6, was walking across rocks back to shore when a wave struck him from behind, causing his left knee to twist. A video captured him crying out in pain, clutching his leg, and being helped from the water by fellow surfers. The 31-year-old was later taken off the beach in a medicab and seen limping on crutches into the event's medical suite. World No. 1 Italo Ferreira, who competed in the same heat, described the moment on the event broadcast: Injury update ? Ramzi has been injured exiting the water following his Opening Round heat. Wishing Ramzi a speedy recovery ? #RipCurlProBellsBeach @ripcurl @originalbonsoy @visitmelbourne — World Surf League (@wsl) April 22, 2025 «He'd just finished the wave and was waiting for the score. I saw him walking, then he went into the rock. The other wave hit him from behind… he said, 'I'm gone, I'm gone.'» On Instagram, Boukhiam shared a photo of himself being helped from the water by two surfers, writing: «Life doesn't always make sense… and right now, it's really tough to accept what happened». «Getting a major injury — again — and during a contest I felt so ready for, just breaks me», he added. «With everything I've already been through, it honestly hits deep». He thanked fellow surfers for their support and vowed to come back «stronger than ever», saying, «everything happens for a reason». Boukhiam was competing at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the longest-running event in professional surfing and one of the most iconic stops on the World Surf League Championship Tour.
