Five Indian nationals from Qatar killed in road accident in Kenya
A bus ferrying a number of tourists, 28 of whom were confirmed to be Indian nationals from Qatar, rolled and landed in a ditch in central Kenya, killing six people. The Indian Embassy in Doha confirmed that five of the deceased had belonged to the group of Qatar-based Indian nationals. The deceased have been identified as Riya Ann (41), her daughter Tyra Rodriguez (8), Jasna Kuttikkattuchalil (29), her 18-month-old daughter Roohie Mehrin, and Geetha Shoji Isaac (58). The identity of the sixth victim is yet to be confirmed. The group had departed from Qatar on June 6 for Eid holidays and were scheduled to return on Wednesday. Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that the Nyandarua County Commissioner, Abdrisack Jaldesa, had stated that the accident happened as the bus was carrying the tourists from Nakuru County to Nyahururu Thomson Falls in Laikipia County, before tumbling into the ditch in the Gichaka area, 41 km south of Nyahururu Town. Xinhua further added that eyewitnesses said the bus was traveling along the road in the rain when the driver lost control and careered off the road before ultimately hitting a tree and the vehicle rolling over several times, killing the six tourists in the process. Local residents had stated that they rushed to the scene of the accident in an attempt to rescue survivors trapped inside the bus. Five Keralites From Qatar Killed in Tragic Bus Accident
At least five Indian nationals from Kerala were killed and several others injured in a devastating road accident in Kenya on Monday. The victims were part of a 28-member tourist group, reportedly all Indian nationals residing in Qatar, who were on a sightseeing trip to Kenya. The deceased have been identified as Riya Ann (41) and her daughter Tyra Rodrigues (8) from Palakkad, Geetha Shoji Isaac (58) from Thiruvalla, Jasna Kuttikkattuchalil (29), and Roohi Mehreen (18 months). Reports indicate that the group included 14 Malayalis, with the deceased hailing from the districts of Palakkad, Thrissur, and Pathanamthitta. According to Kenyan media, a total of six people died in the accident, which occurred while the group was travelling in a private tour bus. The accident happened at around 4:00pm on Monday in the Gichakha area along the Ol Kalou–Nakuru Road in Kenya's Nyandarua County. The tourists were en route from Nakuru to a resort in Nyahururu, where they had planned to spend the night. Amid heavy rainfall, their bus lost control while navigating a steep curve on a downhill slope. The vehicle veered off the road, overturned several times, and crashed onto a farm below. The impact was severe enough to tear off the bus's roof. Six people died instantly on the spot. At least 20 others sustained injuries, five of whom are reported to be in critical condition. Among the injured are Riya's husband, Joel, and their son, Travis, who are currently undergoing treatment. Local residents and police quickly responded, rushing the injured to a hospital in Nyahururu, where they are currently receiving treatment. PALAKKAD: Five Keralites died and several others suffered injuries after the bus in which they were travelling met with an accident in the Nyandarua region of central Kenya on Monday. They were part of a 28-member tourist group of Indian nationals based in Qatar. The deceased are Riya Ann, 41, and her daughter Tyra Rodrigues, 7, from Mannur in Palakkad; Jasna Kuttikkattuchalil, 29, and her 18-month-old daughter Roohie Mehrin from Thoyakkavu in Venkidangu, Thrissur; and Geetha Shoji Isaac, 58, a native of Cherukol near Mavelikkara. The tourist group had 14 Keralites. The others were from Karnataka and Goa. According to reports from Kenya and Qatar, the group was en route to Nyahururu town approximately 200km from Nairobi, where they had planned to stay at Panari Hotel. Indian Embassy promises help to families Their bus reportedly skidded on a rain-soaked road and crashed into a tree, causing it to overturn. The group had departed from Qatar on June 6 for an Eid vacation and was scheduled to return on Wednesday. Riya Ann's husband, Joel, and son, Travis,14, are among those critically injured. Hussain Shafeek A, local ward member from Mannur panchayat and family friend, said the victims' bodies are currently at a government facility in Kenya, awaiting repatriation. 'The family here came to know about the accident on Monday morning. Joel, who is employed in the travel industry in Qatar, and Riya, an airport employee, were on a vacation with their children when the tragedy struck,' Shafeek told TNIE. Geetha Shoji Isaac, who also worked in Qatar, was on tour with her husband Shoji Isaac and their youngest son Abel. Both Shoji and Abel have been admitted to the Nyahururu general hospital with serious injuries. Abel is said to require surgery for a compound fracture. Shoji remains unaware of his wife's death. After coming to know about the accident, their family members in Cherukol made a frantic search for local hospital contacts.
