Fans call out Kourtney Kardashian over son's safety on boat: Why parents still skip safety gear and the risks they're taking

Kourtney Kardashian Barker just dropped some sweet summer boat pics of her family, probably thinking they'd get the usual 'so cute!' and 'mom goals!' comments. But the internet had other plans. Instead, a wave of followers zoomed in on the fact that her 1-year-old son, Rocky Thirteen, wasn't wearing a life jacket. Cue the mom-shaming, safety lectures, and heated debates in the comments section. Kourtney replied back to her fans. 'Update: bought a life vest that fits.' She also wrote, 'Good looking out. Honestly didn't think about some of the dangers. Thank you for making me aware and hopefully this helps make other mommies aware of the dangers of certain types of boating without a life vest." As per PEOPLE, she shared the post on her Instagram story. Now, celebrity or not, this isn't new territory. Every summer, someone gets called out for letting their kids skip the safety gear, especially when there's water involved. But it begs the question: why do so many parents still skip the life jacket rule, even when they know the risks? The 'it's just a quick ride' mindset One of the most common reasons parents give for skipping the vest? 'It's just a quick trip,' or 'We're not going far.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing you Can be Too Old for Learn More Undo It's like thinking you don't need a seatbelt because you're only driving around the block. But boating accidents and falls overboard happen in seconds—and often in calm, sunny weather when people least expect it. Comfort vs. safety Let's be real, life jackets aren't the comfiest thing for little ones. They're bulky, they ride up, and toddlers aren't exactly known for sitting still. Parents sometimes give in to whining or think, 'I'll just hold them.' But even the strongest swimmer or most attentive parent can't always react in time if a child slips overboard. The 'I'm right here' illusion A lot of parents believe that because they're right next to their child, the risk is basically zero. But on a moving boat, distractions happen fast, adjusting a rope, grabbing a snack, answering a phone. That split-second of looking away is all it takes. Water safety experts say supervision is critical, but it's never a substitute for a life jacket, especially for kids under 13. In fact, in the US and Canada, most provinces and states have laws requiring them. When it's a Kardashian, the stakes get higher, not because the risks are any different, but because millions of followers are watching. Public figures are unofficial role models, whether they like it or not. When parents see celebrities skipping safety gear, it can normalize the idea that it's 'not a big deal.' Why this matters more than you think Here's the thing, life jackets aren't just for 'non-swimmers' or 'bad swimmers.' They're for everyone, because cold water shock, boat wakes, or even a sudden lurch can throw anyone off balance. For kids, their small size means they can't recover as easily if they hit the water. In Canada, drowning is the second-leading cause of death for kids under 5. In the US, it's the leading cause of unintentional injury death for kids ages 1–4. Most of these tragedies are preventable with proper safety gear.

Kourtney Kardashian Criticized for Breast-Feeding Pic of Rocky, 20 Months, on a Boat Sans Life Vest

UPDATE 8/9/25 5:15 p.m. ET — Kourtney Kardashian responded to her controversial photo of son Rocky forgoing a life vest during a boat trip. "Update: Bought a life vest that fits! Good looking out," she wrote via her Instagram Stories on Saturday, August 9, sharing an image of a child's size life jacket from the Stohlquist brand's website. "Honestly, didn't think about some of the dangers. Thank you for making me aware and hopefully this helps make other mommies aware of the dangers of certain types of boating without a life vest." Original story continues below: Kourtney Kardashian's latest breast-feeding photo of her 20-month-old son, Rocky Thirteen, has sparked backlash. "Food for the soul ✨,' Kardashian, 46, captioned an Instagram carousel on Friday, August 8. In the first pic, The Kardashians star breast-fed Rocky while they were sitting on a speedboat on a body of water. (Kardashian welcomed Rocky with husband Travis Barker in November 2023.) Several social media users flooded the comments section, inquiring why neither she nor Rocky appeared to be wearing life jackets. Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker's Son Rocky Thirteen's Baby Album: Photos 'Please, please put a life jacket on that sweet babe,' one Instagram user wrote, while another added, 'What no life vests? Isn't that against the law???' A third commenter claimed, 'I would consider keeping life vests on anyone under 18 on a boat. I know Idaho is basically lawless, but if that lake were a few miles west in [Washington] it would be the law and for good reason. Let's make fun and safe water time the norm.' Another photo in Kardashian's roundup seemingly indicated that her family had traveled to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The state requires all minors to wear life vests on the water. 'Children 14 and under must wear an approved life jacket when they are aboard a boat 19 feet in length or less whenever the boat is underway or under power,' a statement on the Parks and Recreation department website reads. 'This applies to manually propelled boats such as canoes and rafts in addition to powerboats, sailboats, personal watercraft (jet skis) and fishing float tubes.' Kourtney Kardashian Shares Empowering 'Reminder' About Postpartum Body While Posing in a Bikini Kardashian has not publicly addressed the backlash. Us Weekly has reached out for comment. The Poosh founder did, however, take to her Instagram Stories on Friday to discuss the breast-feeding aspect of the portrait. 'World Breast-feeding Week! 21 months and going strong,' Kardashian wrote via her Instagram Stories. 'I told my baby, we would breast-feed when he was in my tummy every day after doctors told me he probably wouldn't be able to breast-feed.' She continued, 'I prayed about it, and I believed it. Blessed and grateful for this beautiful life and experience together with my baby.' Rocky is Kardashian's fourth child. She also shares sons Mason, 15, and Reign, 10, as well as daughter Penelope, 12, with ex Scott Disick. Barker, 49, also has children from a previous relationship. The Blink-182 drummer coparents Landon, 21, and Alabama, 19, with ex-wife Shanna Moakler and is a father figure to Moakler's 26-year-old daughter Atiana. Solve the daily Crossword

'true love will always bring you back home to your own soul 🖤,' she captioned a Friday, June 13 Instagram carousel. Kardashian welcomed her baby boy with husband Travis Barker in November 2023. She also shares Mason, Penelope and Reign with her ex, Scott Disick, while Barker, 49, is father to his son, Landon, daughter Alabama and his stepdaughter, Atiana, all of whom he shares with ex-wife Shanna Moakler. Rocky sat on his mother's lap in the cover image, looking away from the camera. Another photo showed some of the toddler's steps as he and his mommy walked side-by-side down a hallway. He wore a black jersey with the number '13' written in white on the back, paired with gray bottoms. Kardashian extended her hand toward him in case he needed assistance. The roundup ended with a picture of several flower vases situated underneath a painting of a baby drumming. The POOSH founder and the Blink-182 drummer were recently photographed at WWE's Money in the Bank event on June 7 at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. Baby Barker was also present for the fun outing, sitting on mommy's lap once again as cameras focused in on the family as the event announcers acknowledged them. According to Rocky's outfit, the images Kardashian shared Friday appear to be from last week's sporting event. Kardashian has been vocal about holding on to her baby boy as much as possible while he's still young. While answering fan questions on her Instagram Stories in May 2024, she gave a fellow new mother parenting advice after she was asked, "Any tips on a baby who only likes to be held to take a nap?" "Enjoy every second! We do the same," Kardashian said in her response. 'He's never been in his crib. It's my favorite thing in the world.' She recently revisited the conversation again, almost one year to the exact date. "And, also with the attachment style parenting, I hold him for his naps," Kourtney continued. After confirming to her sister that she holds him "the whole time" and shared that she once held him for five hours, she explained, "I'll sit in my little chair, usually in the room, and then I still have my little breastfeeding pillow, and he'll kind of lay on there with my arms under, and then I have a little radiation blanket that I put over to protect from EMFs."
