Ricardo Aguilar's family calls for a conviction, defendant racked with guilt

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A tale of two mothers, one who lost a son, and one who was driving the car that killed October, 8-year-old Ricardo Aguilar was crossing the street on the intersection of Bank Street and Holtby Road…the heart of the Oleander neighborhood. Judith Deval, was driving a Toyota Camry when she hit Ricardo. Deval stayed on scene and immediately called 911. She has been full of guilt since that day. Ricardo's mother is still struggling with her son's loss. Carmen Aguilar is Ricardo's mother. He was the middle child of her three kids. 'It's been horrible, I cry every day…I can't sleep at night I just….I just can't sleep and I miss him,' said Aguilar. Ricardo was a student at Roosevelt Elementary, just two blocks from where he was hit. His family said he was an aspiring chef and had a smile that would light up the room. Judith Deval was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter and a felony, according to a recent court filing. The documents say Deval drove north on Holtby Road while using her phone. She stopped at Bank Street to let children and parents cross from the south sidewalk, then started moving forward after they passed, failing to see Ricardo walking east from the north side of the intersection. Deval's car hit Ricardo, knocking him forward and driving over him. She stopped and got out; but left the car in reverse instead of park. It traveled backward over Ricardo. He was taken to Kern Medical, and airlifted to another facility, but the best efforts of doctors couldn't save him. A witness said they saw Deval with her phone up to her ear and Bakersfield police extracted data from that phone, which proves she was on it the time of the crash. Aguilar's family wants a conviction. 'I hope she doesn't just get a slap on the hand either,' said Aguilar. 'Distracted driving is just as dangerous as drinking and driving.' We met with Deval's lawyer, Kyle Humphrey, who says that this is a tragic accident. 'She is devastated by it, she has so much…pain for that family and understanding for what they're going through. There was no alcohol, no drugs, no intention. A simple accident that could happen to anybody,' said Humphrey. On that fateful day, Deval was headed to read in the park on her lunch break. Like Ricardo's mother, Deval is also a mother of three, with her youngest being seven. Humphrey says she hasn't gotten behind the wheel of a car since. 'If I were able to diagnose her myself I would say she has PTSD, as well as extreme emotional difficulty with this. She's in therapy, she hasn't driven a car, she's afraid,' Humphrey said. Deval is scheduled to be in court on April 30. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Florida elementary school principal is arrested after 100 kids found at her home for alcohol-fueled party: cops

An elementary school principal in Florida was arrested after 100 children were found at an alcohol-infused party she hosted, police said. Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan, the 47-year-old principal of Roosevelt Elementary School in Cocoa Beach, was arrested on January 19 after police were called for a reported house party. When offices arrived, they found more than 100 kids dressed in 'matching t-shirts.' Many of them were consuming alcohol that was available in coolers inside the house. One child was suffering from an 'alcohol-related medical event' on the principal's lawn. The kid was 'so heavily intoxicated' that the Brevard County Fire Rescue was called to treat the child, police said. Officers saw Hill-Brodigan in her driveway turning off the outside lights before walking into her home. That meant the fire rescue team had to use their vehicle's auxiliary lights while treating the child with the medical episode, police said. Another child was arrested for DUI near the principal's home, authorities said. An 'intoxicated' Roosevelt Elementary teacher — Karly Anderson — approached the officers at the scene, telling them she was a teacher and had been at the party, police said. Both Hill-Brodigan and Anderson were arrested. They each face one felony charge of child neglect and one misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Hill-Brodgian also faces one misdemeanor count of holding an open house party. Brevard Public Schools told WESH in a statement that both women had been placed on administrative leave. 'Both employees have been immediately placed on administrative leave pending the results of an active police investigation,' the school district said. 'We are extremely troubled by these accusations and are fully cooperating with the Cocoa Beach Police Department. Our commitment to student safety remains our top priority.' According to her bio on the elementary school's website, Hill-Brodigan was once awarded 'Teacher of the Year.' 'I have had the pleasure to serve the students and parents of Brevard County for the last 23 years. Students, families, and staff are very close to my heart, I really enjoy what I do,' her bio states.

Elementary principal hosts 100 kids for alcohol-fueled house party, Florida cops say

An unusual house party led to the arrest of an elementary school principal, after police discovered 'many' of her party guests were juveniles drinking alcohol, according to Florida investigators. It happened Sunday, Jan. 19, in Cocoa Beach, and the host was identified as Roosevelt Elementary School's principal, Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan, police said in a Jan. 24 news release. Cocoa Beach is about a 60-mile drive east from Orlando. 'Upon arrival, officers observed over 100 juveniles at the residence in matching T-shirts, many who were consuming alcohol ... available in coolers at the residence,' police said. 'While officers were investigating the party, a juvenile was located on the front lawn experiencing an alcohol related medical event. The juvenile was so heavily intoxicated that Brevard County Fire Rescue (BCFR) had to respond to treat them.' Hill-Brodigan turned off the home's outdoor lights as the rescuers worked, forcing them 'to use auxiliary lighting on their vehicle to treat the juvenile,' police said. An 'intoxicated adult female' approached first responders at the scene, identifying herself as Karly Anderson, a teacher at Roosevelt Elementary, police said. 'A traffic stop was conducted near the residence resulting in the arrest of the juvenile driver for DUI,' police said. Interviews with 'numerous juveniles and parents' resulted in police issuing arrest warrants for Hill-Brodigan for child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and holding an 'open house party,' police said. Anderson was also charged of child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, police said. Brevard Public Schools placed both women 'on administrative leave pending the results of a police investigation,' WKMG reports. Hill-Brodigan's is a former 'Teacher of the Year,' and her career includes stints as a kindergarten teacher and later as an assistant principal at Oak Park Elementary in Titusville and Ocean Breeze Elementary in Indian Harbour Beach, according to Roosevelt Elementary Website.
