Baltimore County teacher receives award from Ravens, M&T Bank for impact in community
The Baltimore Ravens presented the M&T Bank Touchdown for Teachers Award to Kenwood High School's Andrew Goldbeck on Monday for his outstanding service to his school community. "It was pretty exciting," said Goldbeck. "I didn't really believe it for a few seconds there." Students gathered in the school auditorium for what they were told was a special assembly during fourth period. Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith made a guest appearance at the assembly and presented Goldbeck with a custom jersey and a $5,000 grant to help further his work in the community. "It's amazing to see the type of impact that he's made in so many different students' lives and to see the way they celebrate him," Smith said. "I just speak from experience, you know, there are many teachers that I've had throughout my childhood and high school who taught me things in life that you'll never quite forget." Students were given passes to attend the assembly, which is typically Goldbeck's job to write. However, Kenwood principal Kate Smith kept it a secret. "She lied to me a little bit, but it's OK," Goldbeck said. "It's fun. It's exciting and just shows that a lot of the things that we've done to move our school forward a little bit are working." This is the 12th year that the Ravens and M&T Bank have given the award. School community leader Goldbeck has led the charge in moving the Kenwood community and school forward. In his first year at Kenwood as the community school facilitator, Goldbeck introduced numerous community programs, including a monthly food drive that has served over 450 students and staff. He has facilitated the distribution of over 3,000 clothing items and 500 hygiene products to community members in need. Maybe one of the most impactful initiatives that Goldbeck established this year was a free-of-charge laundromat at the school to serve its homeless families. "In our community, there are almost 80 students that we serve who are homeless," Goldbeck said. "You don't realize how much it can be expensive to get laundry service if there's a family of four living in a hotel room." It's a program that Goldbeck hopes to be able to expand in the future. When asked what he's been most proud of this year, Goldbeck said it's the way they've been able to change the narrative surrounding the Kenwood community. "I've had so many conversations where the narrative of our school was negative, and I've had to change that conversation over and over again," Goldbeck said. "The majority of our kids are good kids who do the right thing, and those [kids] don't have a voice. So, when I go out and I'm talking to people, I'm going to represent them and tell [business and community leaders] like, 'no, you might have seen something negative about our school, but that is not every kid in our building. We have good kids.'"

Roquan Smith named the Ravens bounce-back candidate in 2025 despite earning All-Pro honors
Roquan Smith named the Ravens bounce-back candidate in 2025 despite earning All-Pro honors PFF revealed the bounce-back candidate for the AFC North teams and Roquan Smith was Baltimore's candidate despite earning All-Pro honors in 2024 The saying "heavy is the head that wears the crown" is a metaphorical expression, and the Ravens have several players on the roster under immense pressure. On offense, quarterback Lamar Jackson and running back Derrick Henry are expected to lead a powerful and explosive unit. On defense, Kyle Hamilton is A Swiss army knife, but Roquan Smith is the engine that powers the ship. All four players earned All-Pro honors in 2024 and are among the best at their positions. Pro Football Focus recently revealed their bounce-back candidates for all four AFC North teams, and Smith made the list for Baltimore despite being among the league leaders in tackles and an All-Pro. Last season, Smith played in 16 regular-season games, logging 154 tackles (81 solo), including 1.5 sacks, four pass defenses (including one interception), one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. PFF insinuates that Smith had a down year, but the veteran linebacker was four combined tackles shy of matching his production from the 2023 campaign, according to CBS Sports. He finished the 2024 season with the fifth-most tackles in the NFL behind Zaire Franklin (173), Budda Baker (164), Robert Spillane (158), and Jamien Sherwood (158). During the playoffs, Smith played every defensive snap, logging 13 tackles (six solo) over that span. The 2018 first-round pick has been among the league leaders in tackles since being traded by the Bears to Baltimore in October 2022.

Ravens LB Roquan Smith on Week 1 vs. Bills: Revenge a dish best served cold
When the 2025 NFL schedule dropped this week, the first thing most Buffalo Bills fans noticed was their Week 1 game. On the NFL's opening weekend, the Bills will be hosting the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football. It's a rematch of last year's divisional round at the same location, in which the Bills won a close one, 27-25. Advertisement These are two teams that have some recent history and they are both chasing the feeling of being on top of the league at season's end. We didn't have to wait long to see the Bills play a serious contender. Although the Week 1 matchup doesn't have as high of a stakes as the divisional round on a frigid night in Buffalo, it is one of the best matchups of the entire NFL season. In fact, in ranking of the top-10 prime-time games in 2025, Bills vs. Ravens took the top spot. Showcasing Josh Allen's Bills vs. Lamar Jackson's Ravens to the world is an electric way to kick off the NFL season. But, why wait till then to get fired up about it when you can get your popcorn ready in May? Advertisement Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith joined NFL Network this week to share his thoughts on the Week 1 game. "Just how I like it," Smith said. "Revenge is best served as a cold dish. It will be nice to get up to Buffalo and get a little payback for those guys from the end of the year." Although the Ravens blew out the Bills in the regular season last year, 35-10, Buffalo came through when they had to have it. "Those guys won the game fair and square last year, and you know that misery sets in all offseason," Smith said. "Just knowing that we have everything it takes to be the best team in this NFL... and it's gonna start up there in Buffalo... just like everything we've gone through in the offseason and how the season ended and just unleashing it on those guys... and I'm sure they have the same plan." Advertisement The NFL doesn't need to do much marketing for this game as the vast majority of NFL fans will be tuned in, but Smith is getting the people going four months early. With the two most recent league MVPs squaring off, if this one is anything like the divisional round we'll be in for an instant classic. The Bills opened as 1.5-point favorites for Week 1, the first of 17 games that they are currently favored in. Roquan Smith earns respectable (but lower than deserved) placement in a PFF LB ranking
Roquan Smith earns respectable (but lower than deserved) placement in a PFF LB ranking The Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears don't play very often. In fact, since 1998, it has only happened seven times. Given the unbalanced nature of an NFL schedule, their paths are only scheduled to cross once every seven years. That doesn't mean that Baltimore hasn't occasionally peeked over into the NFC to see if any baby monsters are growing in the midway. In 2022, they found one, and at the trade deadline, they shipped A.J. Klein, a 2023 second-round selection, and a 2023 fifth-round pick to the Windy City to land him. The prize was Roquan Smith, and after a little over two and a half seasons, we can safely state that decision worked out pretty well for them. He's landed on the Pro Bowl roster after the 2022, 2023, and 2024 regular seasons, and he's seemingly on his way to Canton, Ohio, when his playing days are done. In the meantime, he has plenty of good football left in him, and no one would argue against that. Roquan Smith is ranked too low in a recent PFF linebacker ranking. Who doesn't love Pro Football Focus? If someone says they don't, they're probably fibbing. Do they confuse us? Oh, they do, but even if they sometimes frustrate the viewing public, they're always great for a conversation or two. The zany stat engine... More numbers than anyone could ever commit to memory... The daily content... With the NFL season fast approaching, they've been on the money. They've been stacking the top 32 players at every position. Recently, the spotlight fell on the linebackers. Roquan Smith landed in the top four, and successful arguments can be made that he still isn't ranked high enough. First, let's discuss the explanation. "On the surface, Smith's 66.8 PFF overall grade in 2024 would seem like a drop that would push him further down this list, but the personnel around him was a contributing factor. After Kyle Hamilton's move back to safety in Week 11, Smith returned to form. His 81.8 PFF coverage grade from that point on ranked fourth at the position — much closer to his usual level of play. A full season with that structure will have Smith right back in the elite conversation." Okay, though there isn't much there that would constitute error, it's hard not to look at who ranks ahead of him. Fred Warner grabbed the top spot. No one would argue with that, but Smith was slotted behind Zack Baun and Bobby Wagner. Again, those are two worthy players deserving of a top-five ranking. But, hold on a second. Say what you will about scheme and numbers, let's rely on the eyeball test for a second. Wagner has been an ageless wonder and is still an elite run defender. His coverage skills have slipped some. Baun had a phenomenal season in 2024, but that's a small sample size. The First-Team All-Pro ranking was valid, but more evidence is needed that he's one of the top two players at his position. In addition to Smith's three consecutive Pro Bowl nods, he's been named a First-Team All-Pro in each of the past three NFL seasons. You have to love the consistency. You have to love the motor, and at 28, Roquan can play at an elite level for several more seasons. Roquan's off-year, as PFF sees it, was one that most professional linebackers would pay money to boast about, so here's a statement that shares what PFF should have. While a top-five ranking is respectable, it doesn't do enough to encapsulate Smith's brilliance last season. Hopefully, this fuels a revenge tour of sorts, and Roquan is in the top spot at this time following calendar year.
