Ex-Liberal MP Arrested, Accused of Breaching Bail

A former Liberal MP accused of sexually assaulting a teenager is back in police custody after being accused of breaching his bail conditions. Rory Amon, 35, has pleaded not guilty to five charges of sexual intercourse with a person aged 10 to 14. But Amon was arrested on the night of May 14 after police alleged he breached his bail conditions. He will front the Downing Centre Local Court later on May 15. The former NSW MP was arrested at the Day Street police station, in Sydney's CBD, about 10 p.m. on May 14. Police declined to detail the nature of his bail breach. Amon had been on bail awaiting a trial set down for February 2026. Prosecutors allege the boy, then 13, said he was 15 and later agreed to meet in person. Amon insisted on meeting in a private place and led the 13-year-old to a bathroom in a car park where the sexual assaults occurred on two separate occasions, prosecutors allege. At the time, Amon was a local councillor and later rose to win the safe Liberal seat of Pittwater on Sydney's northern beaches. When he faced court in April, prosecutors said further material from Snapchat, where Amon and the boy communicated, was expected to be served within the next three months. The complainant, now aged in his 20s, alleges Amon continued to send him explicit images until he was charged over the alleged child sex abuse in August 2024. Amon was elected to the NSW parliament in March 2023 and was the opposition spokesman on youth issues at the time of his arrest. He resigned soon after, with a subsequent by-election taking the seat out of Liberal hands for the first time in 50 years. 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) National Sexual Abuse and Redress Support Service 1800 211 028

Why a former MP accused of child sex offences breached bail - as he's released from custody

A former Liberal state MP accused of child sexual abuse has been released from police custody after his arrest for breaching bail. Rory Amon is awaiting trial after he pleaded not guilty to five charges of sexual intercourse with a person aged 10 to 14. The former NSW MP was required to report to the Day Street police station in Sydney 's CBD on Tuesday as part of his bail supervision conditions. But he was arrested about 10pm on Wednesday after attending the station one day late. The 35-year-old had simply 'forgotten' to attend, his barrister Dev Bhutani told Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday. Amon appeared on screen wearing handcuffs and a blue jumper from custody at Surry Hills police station. Prosecutors told the court they did not consider the breach serious, as Amon appeared the next day admitting fault and it was his first breach. His release was not opposed. Magistrate Daniel Covington ordered Amon to return to his previous bail conditions and be released from custody. 'Appearing the next day is not consistent with a person who is a flight risk,' the magistrate said. A stony-faced Amon walked out of the police station about 5.30pm on Wednesday, flanked by his brother and mother, as he was surrounded by waiting journalists. He refused to answer questions as to why he forgot to check in for bail. He will face a trial in February 2026 to contest accusations he abused a teenage boy before entering parliament. Amon is accused of masquerading as a 17-year-old after matching with a boy on a website in mid-2017. Former NSW Liberal MP Rory Amon charged with breaching bail while fighting child sex offences

A former NSW Liberal MP charged with child sex offences has been arrested after allegedly breaching his bail conditions. Former Pittwater MP Rory Amon was arrested at the Day St police station in Sydney's CBD about 10pm on Wednesday after allegedly breaching the conditions of his bail. In a statement, NSW Police said Mr Amon had since been charged and was refused bail to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday. The 35-year-old pleaded not guilty earlier this year to five counts of sexual intercourse with a child aged between 10 and 14. He is also facing two counts each of charges of attempted sexual intercourse with a child of the same age and indecent assault of someone under 16. Mr Amon resigned from the NSW parliament within hours of being charged with the sexual assault of a 13-year-old boy in Mona Vale, North Sydney in 2017. The charges relate to two separate alleged encounters with the boy who prosecutors alleged in documents tendered to court in March met Mr Amon on a gay hook-up app. The first alleged incident was said to have occurred in the bathroom of an underground carpark where the 13-year-old is alleged to have performed oral sex. The second alleged incident occurred in the same bathroom, during which police allege Mr Amon performed oral sex on the teen and attempted anal intercourse. Police allege the complainant told Mr Amon in their initial discussion online – before they had met – that he was 17 years old, while the former Pittwater MP claimed to be 15. The documents state the boy ceased contact with Mr Amon sometime after before making disclosures to a head teacher at his school who made a report to police. The boy resumed contact with Mr Amon years later on the app Grindr where Mr Amon allegedly sent sexual messages from multiple accounts. Mr Amon had sought to relocate from North Sydney where he claimed to have 'faced difficulties' to Potts Point in March. The application was dismissed by the court following evidence that the complainant feared running into Mr Amon, a circumstance the boy said could be 'personally catastrophic'.
