Billy Slater forced into unwanted move with Kalyn Ponga after Reece Walsh blow

Reece Walsh's latest injury blow and the poor form of Kalyn Ponga has left Queensland coach Billy Slater with a massive headache before Game 1 of this year's State of Origin series. The Broncos confirmed over the weekend that Walsh is set to be sidelined between 4-6 weeks with a knee injury he picked up in Saturday's heartbreaking golden point loss to the Warriors, which would all but rule him out of Game 1 of the Origin series. "Reece has sustained a PCL injury and will undergo a scan early this week on return to Australia to understand the full extent," the Broncos said in a statement. "At this stage, it's expected he'll miss 4-6 weeks but the Club will provide a further update later this week." With the Origin series kicking off at Suncorp Stadium in just over a month's time on May 28, it would almost certainly mean the incumbent Maroons' fullback would not be able to feature for Brisbane again before Slater picks his Maroons side. And the Queensland coach has made it clear that he wants his squad fit and able to feature in the squad's training camp before the series gets underway. Walsh injured his right knee in the opening minutes of Saturday night's clash in Auckland after a heavy tackle from Warriors forward Kurt Capewell. The Broncos fullback played out the entire match but only ran for 50m and was clearly struggling after spending time out on the wing, with Selwyn Cobbo reverting to fullback. Even before Walsh picked up his latest injury, his rollercoaster form this season would have been a concern for Slater anyway. The Maroons coach has backed Walsh in the past and the livewire No.1 was a standout in the Maroons' 2023 Origin series win, before having a quiet series last year as the Blues wrestled back the shield. Reece Walsh will go for scans on a knee injury suffered in the opening tackle of the Broncos Round 7 to play on till full time but was hampered at different stages - Broncos now unsure if he will be available next shows heavy knee on knee contact. — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) April 19, 2025 Newcastle skipper Ponga would be the most logical choice to replace Walsh in the Maroons' No.1 jersey - at least for the Origin series opener. But Ponga's poor form brings it's own issues for Slater, with the Knights superstar looking like a shadow of the player that won the 2023 Dally M Medal. RELATED: Hynes accused of dodgy act as Johns blasts 'unforgivable' scenes Dylan Edwards silences axing claims amid James Tedesco battle Ponga appeared to be the frontrunner for the Maroons fullback jersey after starting the season strongly, with consecutive man of the match performances in the opening two games. But Newcastle's spluttering attack - which is the worst in the NRL by some distance - has coincided with a drastic drop in form for their inspirational skipper. The Knights have the worst attack in the competition this season after scoring just 60 points in six games. Even Parramatta in last place on the ladder before their Easter Monday game against the Tigers have more points (79) than the Knights. Ponga toiled away again in Newcastle's 34-14 flogging at home against the Sharks on Sunday, running for 173 metres. But he only had two tackle busts to show for another insipid display where he failed to register any attacking stats of merit. With Walsh now set to be sidelined for at least the next four weeks, it gives Ponga an opportunity to press his claims to regain the Maroons' No.1 jersey that he lost to his Broncos rival. But Ponga and the Knights have a tricky run of fixtures to try and work their way out of this current funk, with clashes away to the high-flying Warriors and Rabbitohs next up for Newcastle. The thought of overlooking Ponga for Origin seemed preposterous only a month ago but if the Newcastle skipper can't rediscover his form soon, Slater will have a massive decision to make about his Maroons fullback. Dolphins No.1 Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is another contender but he's done a superb job at centre for Slater in previous Origin series. While current Dally M leader Jye Gray is another name being thrown around by fans after his sensational start to the season at fullback for Souths.
