After stampede, faith and routine return to Kubereshwar Dham
Sehore: Two days after a stampede during a religious gathering left at least seven people dead, Sehore's Kubereshwar Dham is stirring back to life. The TOI visited the site on Thursday and found that chants are softer, the crowds thinner, but the rhythm of faith persists. While investigations into possible administrative negligence are being demanded and police have confiscated DJ equipment, devotees continue to visit, and local businesses anticipate large crowds for upcoming Diwali celebrations. The incident occurred during special programmes in Sawan, when Rudraksha is distributed, drawing large numbers of devotees annually. A sense of peace has settled over Kubereshwar Dham after the tragic stampede. Despite the tragedy, local businesses report that visitor numbers have not decreased significantly. Raju, a sweet shop owner, anticipates a large crowd for Diwali. "Now this time there is going to be a lot of crowd on the day of Diwali. Last year Guruji started a grand celebration for that Diwali day. I think the crowd on Diwali can be more than the crowd that was seen in Sawan," he said. The approach to the temple remains busy as around 300 shops line both sides of the road for about one km. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Some devotees consider visiting Kubereshwar Dham a sign of good fortune. "Devotees keep coming here throughout the year. However, the crowd due to Kanwar Yatra ended on Aug 6. Now devotees are reaching here like other days," the Anmol Yadav, a shopkeeper said. "Came For Faith, Leaving With Fear": 6 Die At Kubereshwar Dham Kanwar Yatra In Madhya Pradesh
What began as a spiritual pilgrimage for thousands of devotees has now turned into a tragic headline. In the last 72 hours, six people have lost their lives at Kubereshwar Dham in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh, all amid a storm of administrative failure, mismanagement, and the collapse of basic infrastructure. Upendra (22) from Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur and Dilip Singh (57) from Chhattisgarh in Raipur are the latest to join the list of people who died during the pilgrimage. On Wednesday, two more devotees, Chatur Singh (50) from Panchwal, Gujarat, and Ishwar Singh (65) from Rohtak, Haryana, died during the Kanwar Yatra, joining Jaswanti Ben (56) from Rajkot and Sangeeta Gupta (48) from Firozabad, who died a day earlier on August 5. All six victims had journeyed to Kubereshwar with unwavering devotion, only to lose their lives in the chaos that awaited them. Their bodies now lie in the district hospital mortuary. The victims were among lakhs of devotees who arrived for the grand Kanwar Yatra organised by famed storyteller Pandit Pradeep Mishra. But the faith-driven fervor quickly turned into a logistical nightmare. Massive crowds, poor crowd management, and zero anticipation by the authorities led to stampedes, suffocating traffic jams, and complete breakdowns in basic amenities like drinking water, food, and sanitation. The Indore-Bhopal Highway, a major route for pilgrims, has been choked since Tuesday night. Vehicles have been stranded for hours. While the police had officially announced restrictions on heavy vehicles and alternative routes, these plans were either poorly executed or simply ignored. Thousands of pilgrims were left to navigate the heat, hunger, and exhaustion - a disaster waiting to happen. Even more disturbing is the sheer lack of preparedness by the Kubereshwar Dham Management Committee and the district administration. It appears that no realistic estimate was made about the crowd size. No adequate planning was in place. Devotees from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and across Madhya Pradesh kept pouring in. The result: no toilets, no clean drinking water, no proper security, and no crowd control. Speaking to NDTV, Cabinet Minister Govind Rajput admitted, "The crowd has grown much larger than expected. The system is falling short. I urge the administration to take control and ensure that such a tragedy doesn't repeat." But the minister's words feel hollow against the grim reality of bodies piling up and families shattered. Former Minister Dr Rajendra Singh of the Congress called it as it is: "Faith does not justify failure. Pandit Pradeep Mishra may choose to distribute Rudraksha or not; that's his choice. But who takes responsibility for the deaths? Rakhi is approaching how many families will tie it with one less brother this year?" Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar added, "No one has the right to play with human lives in the name of religion. Everyone has a family. This should be a wake-up call for the government and organisers to act now." Despite repeated promises, the Samiti, which works with Pandit Mishra, has failed to deliver. It had assured arrangements for food, water, shelter, and order. What devotees found instead was filth, disorder, stampedes and death. "There was no water, no toilets, and they made us pay for food!" said one angry devotee, returning from the site. "The committee did nothing. Women were pushed, the elderly were falling down, and the police just watched. We came for faith. We are leaving with fear."

Two women dead, three injured in fall at religious gathering in Madhya Pradesh's Sehore
Two women were killed and three people injured after a number of devotees fell at a religious gathering in Madhya Pradesh's Sehore district on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), police said. According to the police, the incident took place around 12 p.m. at Kubereshwar Dham of religious preacher Pradip Mishra due to overcrowding at the ashram. Mr. Mishra, a popular religious figure, is scheduled to take out a Kanwar Yatra from his ashram on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) and had called upon devotees to join him, resulting in large crowds at the ashram. Sehore Additional Superintendent of Police Sunita Rawat told The Hindu that during the distribution of Rudraksha (prayer beads), a woman in the front of a queue fainted and collapsed, due to which some other people also fell, causing injuries to some. 'There was no stampede but some people in a queue had fallen, leading to the incident,' Ms. Rawat said, adding that two people received minor injuries while one woman is currently critical. The Additional SP said that the victims are yet to be identified. Another senior officer said that about 50,000 to 60,000 devotees have been coming to the ashram every day during the month of Sawan, and that most of them hail from outside Madhya Pradesh. 'The responsibility of arrangements inside the ashram is on the management. The police and the administration had no role there. Outside the ashram, we have deployed over 400 police personnel for security but we have no role inside,' the officer said, requesting anonymity. 'Before reaching the ashram, they had gone to a river stream nearby to collect holy water by travelling 12 kilometres each side, and after that they stood in line amid the heat and humidity. This may have been the reason of the woman's fainting,' he added.

Huge influx of devotees on last Shrawan Mon amid flood alert
Varanasi: Despite continuous drizzling until Monday morning, a huge crowd of saffron-clad and pilgrims from across the country flooded the roads leading to Kashi Vishwanath Dham on the last Monday of the Shrawan month. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Extra alertness was maintained by police at the ghats along the Ganga due to the flood. As the river water has entered the city there is no space left for for bathing at the ghats. Kanwariyas and devotees, queued up in barricaded areas in and around the Kashi Vishwanath Dham since early morning hours despite the drizzle, As they entered the shrine area they were welcomed with showering of flower petals by the temple chief executive officer Vishwa Bhushan Mishra and other senior officials. The devotees performed jalabhishek and also witnessed the Rudraksha Shringar (adornment) of Lord Vishwanath on the occasion. Though massive crowding was evident on the past three Mondays, a larger crowd converged on the holy city on the last Monday of the auspicious month. Police and NDRF personnel worked hard to manage the crowd thronging Dashashwamedh Ghat for bathing and fetching water in urns, as the overflowing river's water had submerged the roads. They demarcated the area with ropes to ensure that kanwariyas and pilgrims did not enter unsafe zones. The size of queues from both Godowlia and Maidagin sides contniued to grow long until late evening hours. Maintaining their tradition of offering jalabhishek at Shringar Gauri in the Gyanvapi premises on Shrawan's last Monday, Shiv Sena activists led by Ajay Chaubey tried to take out their procession. However, a heavy police force led by ACP Dashaswamedh Atul Anjan Tripathi foiled their bid at Girjaghar crossing and sent them back. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A heavy rush of devotees was also visible at other prominent temples of Lord Shiv, including Markandeya Mahadeo in Kaithi, Gauri Kedareshwar, Tilbhandeshwar, Jageshwar, Mrityunjaya Mahadeo, Kardmeshwar, and Rameshwar Mahadeo temples.
