Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani's son Rushabh recounted their last video call and praised his father's principles and connection with Gujarat. The family of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among the victims of the last month's ill-fated Air India-171 plane crash in Ahmedabad, remembered the late leader saying that he was not just a part of their family but of all the families of Gujarat. Vijay Rupani's son Rushabh Rupani, recounted his last conversation with his late father saying that there has been a tradition in the family to talk on video calls in the morning and evening, so they both had a usual conversation on that ill-fated day too. Rushabh said that he was in the US that time and they both had the conversation about Vijay Rupani going to London to his daughter after two to three years. 'It has been our family's tradition to talk on video calls in the morning and evening. We spoke that day, too (on the day of the Air India plane crash). I was in America then. We talked about him going to his daughter, my sister's, house in London after two to three years…" he said as quoted by news agency ANI. #WATCH | Rajkot, Gujarat | Former Gujarat CM late Vijay Rupani's son Rushabh Rupani, says, 'It has been our family's tradition to talk on video calls in the morning and evening. He said that whenever his call used to come, the two-year-old toddler herself used to take the phone and start talking. He further said that his daughter was singing songs with the late leader when they last talked on June 12. 'My daughter was two years old, and had a special relationship with my father. Whenever his call came, she herself started talking to him by taking my phone. She was singing songs with him when we last talked that day," he added. In an emotional tribute, Rushabh remembered his father as not just a leader of their family but of the entire state. He praised his father's principles, simplicity, and deep connect with the people of Gujarat, which he said still lives on in their hearts. 'He was not just a part of our family, but a part of all the families of Gujarat. He used to say that 'vyakti se bada dal, dal se bada desh.' Even today, his thoughts and principles are alive throughout Gujarat," he added. #WATCH | Rajkot, Gujarat | Former Gujarat CM late Vijay Rupani's son Rushabh Rupani, says, 'He was not just a part of our family, but a part of all the families of Gujarat. Ahmedabad Plane Crash Vijay Rupani, 68, was among the 275 people killed when the London-bound Air India flight crashed into a hostel complex in Ahmedabad moments after it took off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12 afternoon. The deceased included 120 men, 124 women, and 16 children. One person survived the tragedy. The lone survivor was identified as Indian-origin British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh who was returning to the UK with his brother Ajay Kumar Rakesh, 45, who was in a different row inside the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Meanwhile, the preliminary report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on the Air India crash was released on Saturday. While it has answered a critical question on what led to the crash just minutes after the flight took off from Ahmedabad airport—cutting off of fuel supply to the engines—it has left many unanswered questions. A month after his death in Ahmedabad air crash, former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani's ashes immersed in Haridwar

Even as he immersed the ashes of his late father and former Chief Minister of Gujarat Vijay Rupani in Haridwar Friday, Rushabh Rupani said he felt the loss of the rest of the families whose near and dear ones died in the AI 171 crash on June 12. Vijay Rupani was one of the 241 passengers on board the Air India plane who died after the flight crashed on the BJ Medical College hostel mess, minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, killing another 19 people on the ground. Speaking with The Indian Express on phone, Rushabh (29), who is a mechanical engineer and works at a start-up on wireless sensors in the United States, said, 'We are thankful to PM Narendra bhai (Modi) and Home Minister Amit bhai (Shah) for their constant and unwavering support.' Rushabh said the family had already immersed some ashes of his father in Somnath while the remaining was carried to Haridwar in Uttarakhand. 'My father had immense regard for Haridwar and Rushikesh,' he said. Ahead of the former CM's 69th birthday on August 2, his family and friends have launched an initiative to collect memoirs, in written, oral or video format, from various sources and people who came in touch with him and whose lives he touched. Rushabh said that while this collection will enrich their memories of his father, the family is yet to decide on how to put those recollections out on a public platform. 'The accident was heart-wrenching and unimaginable. Our feelings are with the families of all those who have died in the accident. And we pray to God that the families come out of the loss,' Rushabh said. Vijay Rupani was on his way to London where his daughter Radhika lives, to join his wife Anjaliben who had already reached there with the rest of the family, when the tragedy struck. On his personal loss, Rushabh said, 'I cannot express it in words. It is a great loss. He was a mentor and a pillar of support for the family. I always used to get inspiration from him on how to face circumstances firmly without being moved by emotions. He was my idol and a mentor not only in terms of financial aspects or family matters, but spiritually as well. He was a great listener. After his death, we have got support not just from Rajkot, but from across Gujarat and even from Punjab where he was the (BJP's) party in-charge.' Rupani's mortal remains were identified days after the plane crash and he was accorded state honour by the Gujarat government.

Earlier, Rupani's sister submitted samples, but those did not match. "We are awaiting confirmation from the DNA results," a member close to the family said. In Rupani's hometown, Rajkot, preparations are underway for his last rites, with BJP and local authorities organising a grand funeral procession to allow citizens to bid a final farewell to their beloved neta. The procession will begin at his residence in Prakash Society. A prayer meeting is also being planned at Racecourse, although the final decision rests with the Rupani family. Rajkot police issued a notification restricting vehicle movement and parking on the funeral route, anticipating heavy turnout from across the city and nearby villages. "A huge number of BJP workers, traders, and citizens are expected to join the procession," police stated. BJP said the last rites are planned for Sunday, depending on the timely release of the mortal remains by Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Several markets in Rajkot remained closed on Saturday, as a mark of respect to the departed former CM. Around 600 self-financed schools across Rajkot district also shut down. Throughout Saturday, senior politicians and well-wishers gathered at the Rupani residence in Gandhinagar to express their condolences. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BJP said members approached officials multiple times over the last two days, suggesting that Rupani's remains could be identified through a distinctive wristwatch he was known to wear. However, at least two attempts to identify a victim wearing such a watch proved unsuccessful, sources said.
