Rupani's son, Rushabh, who arrived from the US early on Saturday, provided DNA samples to assist authorities in identifying his father's mortal remains.
Earlier, Rupani's sister submitted samples, but those did not match. "We are awaiting confirmation from the DNA results," a
member close to the family said.
In Rupani's hometown, Rajkot, preparations are underway for his last rites, with BJP and local authorities organising a grand funeral procession to allow citizens to bid a final farewell to their beloved neta.
The procession will begin at his residence in Prakash Society.
A prayer meeting is also being planned at Racecourse, although the final decision rests with the Rupani family.
Rajkot police issued a notification restricting vehicle movement and parking on the funeral route, anticipating heavy turnout from across the city and nearby villages. "A huge number of BJP workers, traders, and citizens are expected to join the procession," police stated.
BJP said the last rites are planned for Sunday, depending on the timely release of the mortal remains by Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
Several markets in Rajkot remained closed on Saturday, as a mark of respect to the departed former CM. Around 600 self-financed schools across Rajkot district also shut down.
Throughout Saturday, senior politicians and well-wishers gathered at the Rupani residence in Gandhinagar to express their condolences.

BJP said members approached officials multiple times over the last two days, suggesting that Rupani's remains could be identified through a distinctive wristwatch he was known to wear. However, at least two attempts to identify a victim wearing such a watch proved unsuccessful, sources said.

Stay away from sealed plane crash site, let probe proceed unhindered: Guj DGP appeals
Relief, rescue, and investigation efforts continue in full swing across the devastated site in Ahmedabad following the crash of Air India flight AI-171. Authorities have now sealed the entire crash zone to preserve evidence and facilitate a thorough probe. Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay has urged citizens and onlookers to refrain from approaching the crash site, while the state's Home Minister has assured grieving families that personal belongings recovered from the wreckage will be carefully returned. In a public statement, Gujarat DGP said: 'We are grateful to all local residents and volunteers who assisted in immediate rescue operations. However, over the past two days, the crash site has been cordoned off to allow investigators to collect critical evidence. We request everyone to stay away from the area to avoid any disruption in the investigation process.' The appeal came amid concerns that civilian movement near the crash zone could compromise forensic and aviation-related findings being gathered by Indian and international teams. Quoting the DGP's message, Minister Harsh Sanghavi posted on social media platform X: 'Items recovered from the crash site will be carefully documented and returned to the families of the deceased. Our teams are working meticulously to identify and safeguard these personal effects.' He emphasised that the government recognises the emotional value of these belongings and is committed to returning them 'as soon as possible". Coordination is ongoing with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Air India to streamline this sensitive process. With Boeing representatives and American investigative agencies already in Ahmedabad, the crash site has become a hub of high-level activity. Officials from India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) are leading the technical analysis, with support from state and central forensic and disaster teams. Meanwhile, following the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, the hostels of B.J. Medical College that sustained structural damage are being vacated to facilitate the official investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Addressing the media, Dr. Minakshi Parikh, Dean of B.J. Medical College, said: 'All four Atulyam hostels have either been vacated or are in the process of being cleared as the AAIB team requires full access for its investigation.' She outlined the relocation plans for the affected medical residents. 'Accommodation for all displaced postgraduate doctors has been arranged. The 33 doctors from Atulyam-1 and five from UN Mehta Hospital have been moved to the postgraduate wings A, D, and B of the UN Mehta Hostel. From Atulyam-2 and 3, where 100 GCRI doctors were residing, 52 have been shifted to the previously unused old GCRI building, and 50 rooms have been rented for one year to house the remaining 48.'

AAP leaders pursuing politics of 'abusing, accusing': NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Chahal
BJP leader and New Delhi Municipal Council Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders for pursuing 'abusing and accusing' tactics for political mileage. Reacting to the AAP leader's allegations against the BJP government over power cuts, increase in electricity tariff, waterlogging, water shortage, school fee hike and slum demolition, Chahal told IANS, 'The AAP government itself was involved in corruption and after being voted out, their leaders are busy spreading lies.' He said the AAP government and its ministers lacked the intention to take decisions when they were in power, but they are targeting the BJP government, which is focused on development 'The BJP has always prioritised development, whether in Opposition or in power,' he said, reiterating the resolve to build a 'Viksit Delhi' and realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Viksit Bharat'. The NDMC Vice Chairman was speaking after conducting an inspection with Union Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal. Chahal said the inspection was related to areas near Sarojini Nagar Market, complaints of residents of newly-built government flats and waterlogging problems in central Delhi. He said a coordination committee was formed, and it would review the issues next week. Talking about the discussions on tackling waterlogging problems, Chahal said that during their inspection close to Dayal Singh College in Lodhi Colony, a suggestion was made by the Union Minister to find a permanent solution to the current ad hoc system of pumping out water from NDMC drain into a bigger MCD drain near Commonwealth Games village. 'During the Congress government's tenure, a channel meant to carry rainwater from the NDMC drain was built at a higher level by the MCD, requiring regular pumping to prevent waterlogging in central Delhi. The Union Minister suggested a permanent solution involving the Ministry should be found to do away with the pumping drill,' he said. Chahal said Minister Manohar Lal also appreciated the pole-mounted mist dispensers installed by NDMC in the Jor Bagh area and hinted that the successful model might be replicated in other parts of the country to fight air pollution.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav has landed in the eye of a political storm after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) posted a video purportedly showing a portrait of Dr B R Ambedkar placed at his feet during his 78th birthday celebrations. In the latest developments, the State Scheduled Caste Commission on Sunday issued a notice to Lalu Yadav, seeking a written explanation within 15 days. The notice, issued by Commission Vice-Chairman Devendra Kumar, states that failure to respond within the stipulated time frame could invite legal action. advertisementPOLITICAL REACTIONSThe incident has triggered widespread outrage across the political spectrum and among Dalit rights activists. BJP has accused the RJD of consistently disrespecting Ambedkar and Dalit sentiments. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla claimed the incident exposed RJD's 'non-constitutional ideology.' "The insult to Scheduled Castes and Dalits represents the real identity of the RJD and its allies, Congress and the INDI Alliance. The way BR Ambedkar's picture was placed under the feet of Lalu Prasad Yadav and the indecency shown with the image of Ambedkar, this is the original character of RJD,' Poonawalla said in an interview with news agency ANI. He further alleged that for the RJD, 'family and power' matter more than the Constitution or social Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Samrat Choudhary echoed similar sentiments and condemned the act as an 'unpardonable insult' and called it a 'dark chapter in Bihar's political history.' He demanded a public apology from Lalu Bihar Chief Minister and Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi too slammed the RJD chief, stating, 'Placing Dr Ambedkar's portrait at one's feet is not just an insult to our icon, but to all Dalits. Even Lalu's own community will not tolerate this.'The JD(U), RJD's former ally, also denounced the incident. Party general secretary Shyam Rajak, a former RJD leader himself, called the act "petty and unforgivable.' Speaking at a press conference, he said, 'The people of Bihar will not forgive this display of arrogance and disrespect toward Babasaheb.'Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad termed the act a 'grave insult to the Constitution' and said it exposed a 'feudal mindset.' LJP (Ram Vilas) MP Shambhavi Choudhary accused the RJD of 'continuously misleading and disrespecting Dalit and Mahadalit communities.'Political strategist-turned-activist Prashant Kishor also waded into the controversy, targeting the Congress for its silence. At a press conference in Muzaffarpur, he challenged Rahul Gandhi to condemn Lalu Yadav. 'The Congress has become a sidekick of RJD in Bihar. If Rahul Gandhi wants to prove otherwise, let him issue one statement criticizing Lalu Prasad,' Kishor YADAV DEFENDS FATHERMeanwhile, RJD leader and former Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav came to his father's defense, accusing the BJP of spreading lies and politicising the (BJP) people have nothing to do with Baba Saheb, the Constitution, and Reservation.
