Astronaut Jim Lovell: Lessons In Perseverance And Resilience
James Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13, which suffered an oxygen tank leak 200 miles from Earth, almost never had the opportunity to fly that mission. As reporter Russell Lewis of National Public Radio noted in his remembrance of Lovell's passing, perseverance was his special strength. Lovell did not get into the Naval Academy on his first try. He was later accepted and became a combat fighter pilot and qualified for the test pilot program at Edwards AFB. He did not qualify for the Mercury astronaut program, but was later accepted into the Gemini program. Again, a second try was successful. Handling adversity These setbacks steeled James Lovell to be an astronaut who could handle the pressures in times of adversity. Fear was not an option in times of crisis. As Lovell told the New York Times years later, 'We were all test pilots, and the only thing we could do was try to get home,' he said to The New York Times in 1995. 'The idea of despair never occurred to us, because we were always optimistic we would get home.' It was this kind of bravery that transfixed the nation and, decades later, after Lovell published his story of the mission, led to a landmark motion picture directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks as Lovell. Crisis leadership and teamwork One thing Lovell noted about the Apollo 13 mission was NASA's leadership. It scrambled together ad hoc solutions to engineer fixes that could make the command module safe enough to return to Earth. As Lovell told NPR in 2014, Apollo 13 'showed was what you could do with good leadership in an organization, how good leadership fosters teamwork, and how teamwork and initiative, when you faced a problem - to use the initiative or imagination to try to solve the problem because everything doesn't flow freely in life, and things change.' Perseverance + Resilience Perseverance is something that strengthens as we use it—learning from Lovell's example, when we face obstacles, we do not give up immediately. Learn from what you did and improve when necessary. Perseverance is an attribute of resilience, a must-have for anyone in leadership. Resilience emerges, as it did for Lovell, from setbacks. Do not become discouraged. Reflect on your past successes. Self-confidence is honed by achievement. Sometimes achievements come easily, but the ones that require extra effort are those that prepare us to face emerging challenges. Although Lovell captained Apollo 8, the first mission to leave Earth's orbit and circle the Moon, he never achieved his dream of landing on the Moon. Life does not always work out as planned but Lovell made his mark in history by turning disaster into a life-saving mission. Godspeed, Jim Lovell.

Future of hit ITV drama revealed after five series on air – as major cast member confirms they will return
THE FUTURE of a hit ITV drama has been revealed after five series on air - but will fans be happy or sad with the outcome? Hit show Grace is written by the critically-acclaimed screenwriter Russell Lewis, with the future of the drama now officially revealed. 5 5 5 The adaptation of the bestseller by Peter James, starring John Simm, is a beloved show that has run for five seasons. But will it be coming back for more? The series, which follows Brighton-based Detective Roy Grace, has now been confirmed for a sixth series ITV has said that the production of the sixth series is now under way, and fans will be thrilled to learn of one actor defitineltey returning. John Simm will be seen portraying Detective Superintendent Roy Grace once again. Not only will John be at the helm, but he will rejoin forces with some of his beloved castmates. John will reunite with Grace co-stars Richie Campbell, who appears as DI Glenn Branson, and Laura Elphinstone who plays DS Bella Moy. Series six will deliver a slew of titles including: Left You Dead, Picture You Dead, and One Of Us Is Dead. John has spoken out since being confirmed as making a comeback to the show for the sixth series. He said: "I'm really looking forward to seeing where Roy's journey goes in this series." John added: "This is the longest I've been involved in any show! But it's such a joy to do, and to be surrounded by a team like this for large chunks of the year makes it impossible to turn down." Grace series five wrapped up on ITV1 and STV last month. While waiting for the sixth series, viewers can stream all episodes on ITVX and STV Player. To date, all five series of Grace have amassed 16 million streams on ITVX. Crime dramas on ITVX Crime drama buffs have a wide selection of choices on ITVX - here is a selection of some of the programmes available to binge. Professor T: Based on a Belgian TV series of the same name, former Death in Paradise lead Ben Miller plays the title character. Professor Jasper Tempest is a criminologist with OCD who helps the police solve crimes. The cast also includes Emma Naomi, Barney White and Andy Gathergood. The Beast Must Die: This series follows a mother's grief for her son, who was killed in an accident. Nicholas Blake's novel of the same name has been adapted for the programme. Stars include Cush Jumbo, Jared Harris, Billy Howle and Geraldine James. Red Eye: Starring Richard Armitage, Jing Lusi and Lesley Sharp star in this six-part thriller, which mostly takes place during an all-night flight between London and Beijing. With dead bodies piling up and a mystery to unravel, the heroes must work fast to get to the truth. The Twelve: This Australian drama originally aired as a miniseries in 2022, with the episodes dropping in the UK in February 2023. Four months later, the show was renewed for a second season. Jurassic Park star Sam Neill stars in the leading role of barrister Brett Colby. Manhunt: Martin Clunes stars in this drama based on true murder investigations. Series one focused on the death of Amélie Delagrange, which took place in 2004, while the second depicted the search for serial rapist Delroy Grant. Series five alone announces for over nine million of the aforementioned streams. Speaking of the sixth series, executive producer Phil Hunter commented on how "thrilled" they are to be working on more episodes. He said: "Grace is such a joy to make so we are thrilled at how well received series five was. "It's great to be back in Brighton with our brilliant and talented cast and crew to shoot another four episodes this summer." 5
