St Patrick's Athletic exit Europe after giving Besiktas a scare

(Besiktas win 7-3 on aggregate) St Patrick's Athletic's hopes of producing one of the greatest comebacks in European football ended in vain as they were downed 3-2 by Besiktas in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League third round tie in Istanbul. Stephen Kenny's side went to Turkey trailing 4-1 following their game in Tallaght and they got within a goal of levelling things up after Conor Carty and Ryan McLaughlin hit the back of the net early-on. Ole Gunnar Solskjær had the final say however, by overseeing a comeback sparked by Demir Ege Tiknaz in the dying minutes of the first half. Everything started with a deep cross that Jake Mulraney turned into a shot at the near post. David Jurasek put this out for a corner, which turned into a penalty after a quick VAR review spotted a Gabriel Paulista handball. Carty stepped up to take it and opened the scoring by sending Mert Gunok the wrong way in just the second minute. The Saints immediately retreated into a condensed 4-5-1 formation as Besiktas went on to dominate possession. With that came chances, beginning with a Milot Rashica cross that narrowly missed Keny Arroyo in the 13th minute. Tammy Abraham followed that up by twisting into space and seeing a low shot blocked down by the St Pat's defence on the penalty spot. Kenny's players kept their shape in the face of this, and their reward came from a Barry Baggley free-kick in the 34th minute. Carty flicked on at the far post for a Besiktas defender to awkwardly clear as far as Joe Redmond. The Saints' captain headed down to McLaughlin, who fired in from close range to make it 4-3 on aggregate. The Saints were in dreamland but they woke up to a Rashica cross that Abraham was able to turn towards Ege Tiknaz for a shot in the 43rd minute that went in via a deflection. It was a cruel moment for the League of Ireland side and things got worse after the break as the creator turner scorer with a right-footed strike on the penalty spot. That made it 2-2 on the night and 6-3 on aggregate, with all the good work done by St Pats undone in a matter of minutes either side of half-time. Joao Mario wrapped things up in the 79th minute by stabbing the ball in at the near post after collecting a pass from Jonas Svensson. Besiktas: Mert Gunok; Jonas Svensson, Gabriel Paulista, Emirhan Topcu, David Jurasek (Felix Uduokhai HT), Demir Ege Tiknaz, Orkun Kokcu (Joao Mario 64), Keny Arroyo (Ernest Muci HT), Rafa Silva, Milot Rashica, Tammy Abraham (Mustafa Hekimoglu 64) (Kartal Yilmaz 67). St Patrick's Athletic: Joseph Anang; Axel Sjoberg, Ryan McLaughlin (Tom Grivosti 80), Joe Redmond, Luke Turner, Darren Robinson (Jamie Lennon 56), Barry Baggley, Al-Amin Kazeem, Kian Leavy (Simon Power 56), Conor Carty (Mason Melia 56), Jake Mulraney (Chris Forrester 67).

St Pat's put up a fight but Besiktas too strong in Istanbul

Uefa Conference League third qualifying round second leg: Besiktas 3 (Tiknaz 43, Abraham 49, Mario 79) St Patrick's Athletic 2 (Carty pen 3, McLaughlin 34) Despite giving themselves a fighting chance of progression with first half goals from Conor Carty and Ryan McLaughlin, St Patrick's Athletic ultimately saw their Uefa Conference League campaign ending in a third qualifying round defeat to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Besiktas in Istanbul on Thursday evening. Much improved in the second half of last week's first leg at Tallaght Stadium, Pat's enjoyed a dream start to the action at Besiktas Stadium. While a corner was initially awarded in the opening minute after Al-Amin Kazeem had delivered a dangerous cross into the area from the left-hand side, the Saints were subsequently awarded a penalty after a VAR review determined that former Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista had handled the delivery. There was just over two minutes on the clock when Carty stepped up to the spot and he expertly broke the deadlock on the night by drilling the ball into the bottom left-hand corner. Besiktas frontman Tammy Abraham had a couple of opportunities to supplement his hat-trick in Tallaght last week, but Pat's ultimately shocked their Turkish counterparts by moving into a two-goal lead on 34 minutes. READ MORE After a Barry Baggley free-kick was kept alive inside the area, McLaughlin was on hand to lash the loose ball beyond the reach of Besiktas netminder Mert Gunok in fine style. Conor Carty celebrates scoring a penalty for St Pat's. Photograph: Aleksandar Djorovic/Inpho While this left the bare minimum between the teams on aggregate, Besiktas eventually responded in the 43rd minute as Demir Ege Tiknaz fired home from close-range via a heavy deflection off Saints centre-half Joe Redmond. In a sign of how disappointed he was with his side's performance in the opening 45 minutes, Solskjaer introduced Ernest Muci and Felix Uduokhai off the Besiktas bench for the start of the second half. Yet it was one of the home team's starters who bagged the goal that took a massive sting out of the St Pat's challenge just four minutes after the restart. Although Joseph Anang produced a fine save from Rafa Silva moments earlier, there was little the Saints custodian could do to prevent Abraham from finding the net with a neat finish for his fifth goal in just four appearances for Besiktas. This left the Inchicore visitors staring into another three-goal aggregate deficit and in an effort to force their way back in the reckoning once again, Saints boss Stephen Kenny added Mason Melia, Simon Power and Jamie Lennon to the mix as a triple substitution on 56 minutes. The vastly-experienced Chris Forrester also entered the fray just shy of the third-quarter mark, but it was Besiktas replacement Joao Mario was enjoyed the biggest impact as he was picked out by Jonas Svensson for a clinical strike to the Pat's net with just under 12 minutes of normal time to play. This helped to ensure Besiktas came away with home and away victories from this tie, and once they return to Irish soil, Pat's will switch their focus to Sunday's FAI Cup third round encounter against Shelbourne at Richmond Park. BESIKTAS: Gunok; Svensson, Paulista, Topcu, Jurasek (Uduokhai, 46); Tiknaz, Kokcu (Joao Mario, 63); Arroyo (Muci, 46), Rafa Silva, Rashica; Abraham (Mustafa, 63). ST PATRICK'S ATHLETIC: Anang; Sjoberg, McLaughlin (Grivosti, 80), Redmond, Turner; Robinson (Lennon, 56), Baggley, Kazeem; Leavy (Power, 56), Carty (Melia, 56), Mulraney (Forrester, 67). Referee: A Nobre (Portugal).

June Brings Stronger Sales and More Listings to Northern Virginia Housing Market

Higher inventory and buyer activity shape a more balanced market FAIRFAX, Va., July 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Northern Virginia's housing market showed renewed strength in June as a wave of new listings helped meet buyer demand and drive year-over-year gains in both home sales and total transaction volume, according to the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors® (NVAR). The number of homes sold in June 2025 climbed to 1,847 — a 13.6% increase over June 2024. As more transactions closed, total sold dollar volume reached more than $1.64 billion, marking a 15.2% gain from the previous year. Inventory was the key driver of this growth. Active listings jumped 52.7% year-over-year, reaching 2,512 properties on the market. This helped push the months of supply to 1.84, a 46.5% increase compared to June 2024, giving buyers more breathing room than in recent years. While buyer activity was strong, increased inventory also brought slight shifts in pricing and pace. The median sold price in June 2025 dipped 1.3% year-over-year to $770,000. Homes stayed on the market for an average of 20 days, a 42.9% increase from the previous year. Together, these trends point to a market that is normalizing — offering buyers more flexibility while encouraging sellers to align with evolving conditions. "We view this as a healthy recalibration," said NVAR CEO Ryan McLaughlin. "Buyers have more time to make informed decisions. Pricing is stabilizing after years of intense upward pressure. These are all indicators of a maturing, resilient market that is adjusting to new conditions without losing momentum." This summer, buyers in the region are taking a more measured approach, reflecting a transition toward a more balanced market environment. "The difference this year is options," said NVAR Board Member Veronica Seva-Gonzalez, Compass. "Buyers aren't rushing into the first available home; they're able to take a breath, compare choices, and still act competitively when the right property comes along. It's a more thoughtful market, and that's good for everyone. While some markets have seen inventory improve, competition remains fierce in some of the most sought-after areas, where well-priced homes are still receiving multiple offers." Looking ahead, NVAR anticipates steady market activity, particularly if more homeowners choose to list their properties. With conditions gradually balancing and opportunities expanding, the region is well-positioned for continued resilience in the months ahead. "Northern Virginia's economic stability, excellent schools, and overall quality of life remain major draws," McLaughlin said. "If more sellers enter the market, we anticipate strong performance across the region for the rest of the year." Yankees RHP Luis Gil Faces Hitters for 1st Time Since Straining His Right Lat

Luis Gil faced hitters for the first time since straining his right lat in spring training, throwing about 20 pitches in a session New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone described on Saturday as 'free and easy.' About two hours before the Yankees continued their three-game series with Baltimore, Gil notched four strikeouts–three swinging. Since several of the backups who would take part in live sessions were in the lineup, Gil threw to bullpen catcher Peter Serruto and information coordinator Ryan McLaughlin. 'I felt it looked really good,' Boone said. 'I think he was 95–96. It looked every bit of that, looked like it. Just the metrics on the four-seam were really good, and I thought he was in control of himself. So free and easy.' The Yankees are unsure of how many more times Gil will face hitters before progressing to a rehab game. Boone is hopeful the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year can return by the end of July. 'I felt really good out there,' Gil said through a translator. 'It's been a long process. You heal little by little. It felt good to get on the mound to face some hitters.' Gil stopped a bullpen session on February 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. He went to New York for a second MRI that revealed a high-grade lat strain on March 3. Gil was shut down from throwing for at least six weeks after receiving the original diagnosis, and at the time the Yankees said he would not return until June at the earliest. On April 16, the Yankees said Gil's throwing program would be delayed for about 10 days. 'It's important. Fortunately, after the setback, it's been a slow buildup, but it's gone well,' Boone said. 'It feels like kind of every step of the way. So that's been encouraging, and now we start to build. We start to build lives, pitch counts, and then eventually getting into rehab games. So definitely another important box to check.' The 26-year-old Gil went 15–7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL East champions last year, striking out 171 and walking a major league–high 77 in 151 2/3 innings. Acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a 2018 trade, Gil made a successful return from Tommy John surgery and threw eight more innings in a pair of postseason starts as the Yankees reached the World Series for the first time since 2009.
