St Patrick's Athletic exit Europe after giving Besiktas a scare

(Besiktas win 7-3 on aggregate)
St Patrick's Athletic's hopes of producing one of the greatest comebacks in European football ended in vain as they were downed 3-2 by Besiktas in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League third round tie in Istanbul.
Stephen Kenny's side went to Turkey trailing 4-1 following their game in Tallaght and they got within a goal of levelling things up after Conor Carty and Ryan McLaughlin hit the back of the net early-on.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær had the final say however, by overseeing a comeback sparked by Demir Ege Tiknaz in the dying minutes of the first half.
Everything started with a deep cross that Jake Mulraney turned into a shot at the near post. David Jurasek put this out for a corner, which turned into a penalty after a quick VAR review spotted a Gabriel Paulista handball.
Carty stepped up to take it and opened the scoring by sending Mert Gunok the wrong way in just the second minute.
The Saints immediately retreated into a condensed 4-5-1 formation as Besiktas went on to dominate possession.
With that came chances, beginning with a Milot Rashica cross that narrowly missed Keny Arroyo in the 13th minute.
Tammy Abraham followed that up by twisting into space and seeing a low shot blocked down by the St Pat's defence on the penalty spot.
Kenny's players kept their shape in the face of this, and their reward came from a Barry Baggley free-kick in the 34th minute.
Carty flicked on at the far post for a Besiktas defender to awkwardly clear as far as Joe Redmond. The Saints' captain headed down to McLaughlin, who fired in from close range to make it 4-3 on aggregate.
The Saints were in dreamland but they woke up to a Rashica cross that Abraham was able to turn towards Ege Tiknaz for a shot in the 43rd minute that went in via a deflection.
It was a cruel moment for the League of Ireland side and things got worse after the break as the creator turner scorer with a right-footed strike on the penalty spot.
That made it 2-2 on the night and 6-3 on aggregate, with all the good work done by St Pats undone in a matter of minutes either side of half-time.
Joao Mario wrapped things up in the 79th minute by stabbing the ball in at the near post after collecting a pass from Jonas Svensson.
Besiktas: Mert Gunok; Jonas Svensson, Gabriel Paulista, Emirhan Topcu, David Jurasek (Felix Uduokhai HT), Demir Ege Tiknaz, Orkun Kokcu (Joao Mario 64), Keny Arroyo (Ernest Muci HT), Rafa Silva, Milot Rashica, Tammy Abraham (Mustafa Hekimoglu 64) (Kartal Yilmaz 67).
St Patrick's Athletic: Joseph Anang; Axel Sjoberg, Ryan McLaughlin (Tom Grivosti 80), Joe Redmond, Luke Turner, Darren Robinson (Jamie Lennon 56), Barry Baggley, Al-Amin Kazeem, Kian Leavy (Simon Power 56), Conor Carty (Mason Melia 56), Jake Mulraney (Chris Forrester 67).

Matt Healy dreams of ECL group stage and Ireland's call as Hoops turn to FAI Cup

Matt Healy came home to experience the big European group stage nights that Shamrock Rovers revelled in last season. The in-form midfielder has his eyes on the prize after last Thursday's emphatic ECL third round second leg victory over Vikingur in Tallaght. And Healy believes that if Rovers can stay in the play-off first leg against Portuguese outfit Santa Clara - who finished fifth in the Primeira Liga last term -then Hoops can finish off the job again at home. "All eyes on next week," he said. "It'll be a difficult game in Portugal. They'll be a decent side as well, but hopefully we can get a result and bring it back to Tallaght, like Thursday night, and put on another performance. "I've only been here six months, but over the last few years, it's a very difficult place to come. So if we can bring a result back to Tallaght, it'll be very difficult for them." "It's good to get compliments like that," said Healy, who insisted he hadn't seen the praise. "I suppose it's a good thing, but we'll see at the end of the day, I'd rather win the league and the cup and go far in Europe. It's the main thing, really, and if I'm playing well, that's a bonus." Josh Honahan earned a senior Ireland call-up this summer on the back of his performances for Rovers in Europe and, with Heimir Hallgrimsson watching on last Thursday, Healy could now also be on the international manager's mind. "Yeah, listen, everybody wants to play for their country," said the 22-year-old. "I'm just trying to play as well as possible and just focus in on every game that goes by. I don't know if I'm in the window or questioned to be picked or not, but we'll see over the next few months." Aaron McEneff (Image: ©INPHO/Ryan Byrne) Rovers are in action in the third round of the Sports Direct FAI Cup against Longford Town today, and the Premier Division table-toppers are expected to be much-changed for the tie against the midlanders, who are eighth in the First Division. Bradley, however, insists that his players can't take be taken lightly. 'No team in this country can be," said the Hoops supremo. "One of our aims is to win the FAI Cup. If we want to do that, we need to make sure we get past Longford. "Our mentality, like every other team, will be to respect them, then impose ourselves on the game, try and win it and make sure we're in the next round.' Aaron McEneff is close to a return for Rovers - if he doesn't make it for the Cup game, he will be available for the trip to Portugal - but Max Kovalevskis had knee surgery during the week that will sideline him for three or four weeks. "We're hoping to get him back quickly, as he was flying when he came in," Bradley commented. "We know what we have with Max. It's a frustrating time for him, but that's football and Max will be better for it.'

Eve McMahon finishes eleventh overall at European Championships

With a miracle final day needed for Eve McMahon to deliver big, the Dublin sailor appeared to be back on form this morning in Sweden as she convincingly won the opening race of the day at the European Championships. That result brought her back into contention for a solid finish to the six-day event but in the two races that followed, small errors on the race course meant that she finished in the bottom half of the fleet each time. She finished eleventh European overall and as consolation won the bronze medal for the under-23 age group. There was good news for the McMahon household as her elder brother, Ewan scored a personal best at the regatta with ninth European in his ILCA 7 men's event. His final day also opened well with a third place, then a tenth followed by a 19th. His team-mate Finn Lynch never found his regular top ten form this week and ended 16th European in the 153-strong field. The main season is now over for the one-person dinghy sailors but all three have been invited to compete in the Sailing Grand Slam final in The Netherlands next month.

A final repeat and a tasty Dublin derby in Inchicore – this weekend's FAI Cup third round previews

(Ryan McBride Brandywell, 8pm) Team news: Derry have a full squad to choose from, bar Cameron Dummigan who's still making progress in his rehab. United hope to recall Paul Doyle but Elicha Ahui, Steve Zishim Bawa and Scott Brady remain absent. Talking point: Derry boss Tiernan Lynch said this week he expects a tight battle along the lines of their disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Cork last week. Bar that 3-0 loss in Derry in June, Drogheda have been solid away from home, where they give up few chances, and City will need to work harder than they have done. Just one goal scored in four league games is a real concern. This one could go all the way to penalties but Derry could knock out the holders and gain revenge for last year's final defeat. Odds: Derry 1/2, Drogheda 9/2, draw 13/5 Verdict: Derry in extra-time SUNDAY ST PATRICK'S ATHLETIC v SHELBOURNE (Richmond Park, 5pm) Team news: Pat's are missing Romal Palmer, Seán Hoare, Aidan Keena, Zack Elbouzedi and Anto Breslin. Shels carry on without Seán Boyd, Conor Kearns and Jack Henry-Francis. Talking point: This is a massive tie for both clubs in terms of European aspirations for next season, especially as the FAI Cup winners now enter the Europa League with all those benefits. It's been even in their league meetings (a win for each and a draw). The Saints showed in Istanbul that their squad players can deliver, and while Shels have options too, that bench can get Pat's over the line, maybe in extra-time or on penalties. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more Ref: Paul McLaughlin Odds: Pat's 10/11, Shels 5/2, draw 11/5 Verdict: Pat's in extra-time SHAMROCK ROVERS v LONGFORD TOWN (Tallaght Stadium, 7pm) Team news: Rovers assess their squad after Thursday's European exertions, but there is still no place for the exiled Jack Byrne. However, Stephen Bradley can rotate with ease. Eric Yoro is the main concern for Longford. Talking point: While Rovers have been thriving in Europe, it's been a rough summer for Longford. Last week's win over Treaty United was a rare success in the league but while that 2-0 win and clean sheet did halt the flood of goals conceded, Longford just can't compete with the squad strength of the Hoops.
