Texas A&M wasted no time responding to Duke Miles' departure, securing a commitment from Kansas transfer guard Rylan Griffen for the 2025 class. Griffen, a 6'6" sharpshooter, spent two seasons at Alabama, where he played a key role in the 2024 Final Four run before transferring to Kansas for his junior season. In his lone year with the Jayhawks, he averaged 6.3 points and 1.4 assists, shooting 33.6% from beyond the arc. The college basketball transfer portal has been chaotic since the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament, and players from seemingly every team heading to the portal to find their next destination. Among those is former Alabama Crimson Tide guard Rylan Griffen, who spent two years in Tuscaloosa before transferring to the Kansas Jayhawks last year. Advertisement During his lone year at Kansas, Griffen started in 20 of his 33 games, while only averaging 6.3 points per game, almost five less than he averaged in Alabama the year prior. During the Tide's Final Four run in 2024, Griffen averaged 12.4 points per game off a stunning 48.1% three-point percentage in the NCAA Tournament. New Texas A&M head coach Bucky McMillan has already exceeded expectations ahead of his first season with the program, bringing in eight commitments from the transfer portal after landing former Alabama and Kansas guard Rylan Griffen, beating out Alabama head coach Nate Oats, who was hoping to reunite with the sharpshooter. Griffen's skillset is borderline elite, and while he only averaged 6.3 points and 1.4 assists, and shot 33.6% from beyond the arc with the Jayhawks, his final season with the Crimson Tide included 11.2 points per game, 3.4 rebounds, and a 39.2% three-point shooting percentage. Advertisement On Thursday, former Texas Tech forward Federiko Federkio committed to the Aggies after attending Texas A&M's baseball game vs. Lamar on Tuesday, and for those unaware of the Egypt-born big man's play style, the Aggies won't have to worry about rebounding and defensive effort on his end, while his inside game led by making nearly 75% of his shots last season. With the Aggies, Federiko looks like a starter. However, just hours before Griffen's commitment was announced, McMillan lost one of his first portal commitments, former Oklahoma guard Duke Miles, who may have seen the writing on the wall after Griffen entered the picture. With the recent movement, Texas A&M now has nine players on the 2025 roster, but McMillan is not finished adding just yet. Still, it's hard not to be impressed with the talent and experience he and his coaching staff have to work with, ranging from proven star power in Mackenzie Mgbacko to unproven, but potential big men who can stretch the floor in Zach Clemence and Jamie Vinson IV. Texas A&M has reportedly contacted USC transfer guard
New Texas A&M basketball head coach Bucky McMillan has already raised the fan base's expectations after landing eight players from the transfer portal, looking to make an immediate impact in the SEC during his first season at the helm. While the level of talent he's acquired over the past month is somewhat surprising, his dedication to building the roster isn't based on what we witnessed during his successful career with Samford. Last week, McMillen added his seventh and eighth players from the portal, as Texas Tech forward Federiko Federiko and Alabama/Kansas guard Rylan Griffen, who are both slated to either start or play hefty minutes during the 2025 season. While McMillen can already field a roster that is talented enough to compete for a spot in the NCAA Tournament, he is still a couple of pieces away from matching the top teams in the conference. Advertisement What's been most impressive has been McMillan's willingness to reach out to every portal player imaginable despite A&M's lack of "elite" basketball stature, which includes USC transfer guard Desmond Claude, who has become the target of multiple blue blood programs this week. During his 2024 junior season, Claude averaged 15.8 points per game, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists, while he shot nearly 50% from the field, and 30% from 3-point range. Claude is an elite scorer, ranked as the 34th player in the transfer portal, and would be a guaranteed starter in McMillan's lineup, opposite former North Alabama guard Jacari Lane. With Florida and North Carolina now out of the picture, Gonzaga, Duke, Ole Miss, Virginia, and Kentucky are reportedly in the mix, which is a tough task for McMillan and his staff, but similar to landing Rylan Griffen, don't count the Aggies out. Yes, a potential transfer portal target for Alabama this offseason, Griffen will not be returning to Alabama for the 2025-26 campaign, as the guard announced a commitment to the Texas A&M Aggies on Friday night. Griffen, who transferred from Alabama to Kansas last offseason, is coming off a year in which he started 20-of-33 games for the Jayhawks to average 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game on 37.2% shooting from the field. The guard also shot 33.6% from three, as well as 67.5% at the free throw line. At Alabama, Griffen was a key member of the Crimson Tide's 2024 Final Four team, and started 33-of-73 games during his time in Tuscaloosa. Over that span, Griffen averaged a combined 8.5 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game on 41.8% shooting from the field, as well as 35.4% from three and 78.2% at the free throw line.
