Trade Idea Swaps Phillies' Andrew Painter for $3.85 Million Outfielder
Trade Idea Swaps Phillies' Andrew Painter for $3.85 Million Outfielder originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Philadelphia Phillies executive Dave Dombrowski has a history of being aggressive, and it's helped his teams win five pennants and two World Series over four decades. Advertisement The time has come for Dombrowski to make another win-now move, one involving a face he knows all too well. During their path to the 2018 World Series title, Dombrowski and the Boston Red Sox used a seventh-round pick on Long Beach State (Calif.) outfielder Jarren Duran. Nearly a decade later, Duran is an All-Star potentially on the verge of being traded. A reunion between Dombrowski and Duran makes sense, and it's one that Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer proposed on Wednesday. Rymer suggested the Phillies go "all-in" and trade top pitching prospect Andrew Painter, along with catcher Eduardo Tait, to the Red Sox for the speedy Duran. "Knowing how short their contention window is getting, they should arguably be looking to do exactly that sort of deal before July 31," Rymer wrote. Boston Red Sox left fielder Jarren DuranKen Blaze-Imagn Images Duran enters Wednesday hitting .273 with 17 doubles, six triples and a .743 OPS for a fourth-place Red Sox club. He has three years of team control remaining and could either replace Johan Rojas in center field or push Max Kepler out of left field. Advertisement Duran fits the Phillies, especially in a loaded lineup already featuring Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner. However, Rymer questioned whether trading the team's consensus No. 1 prospect and a projected future ace is worth it, even if it nets them Duran. "They are in win-now mode, but Painter is the heir apparent for Zack Wheeler, who isn't getting any younger," Rymer said. Painter is 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA and 20-7 K-BB ratio in 17 Triple-A innings. Tait, who turns 19 in August, owns a .285 average, eight homers, 35 RBIs and a .837 OPS at Single-A Clearwater. Rymer acknowledged it's "doubtful" the Red Sox would decline that trade offer. He also looked at the flip side, questioning why the Phillies would do it. Advertisement "To trade a guy like that just to improve an already dangerous offense would be borderline wasteful," Rymer wrote of Painter. Dodgers Trade Idea Involves Acquiring Red Sox's Jarren Duran for Top Prospects
Dodgers Trade Idea Involves Acquiring Red Sox's Jarren Duran for Top Prospects originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox are in a tailspin, dropping eight of their last 10 games. They look more like sellers than ever two months before the MLB trade deadline. With that in mind, Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer compiled the 10 best trade packages involving outfielder Jarren Duran. While the Seattle Mariners claimed the number one spot, the Los Angeles Dodgers finished in second place. Advertisement Rymer's trade package sees the Red Sox sending Duran to Los Angeles in exchange for catcher/outfielder Dalton Rushing (Dodgers No. 1 prospect), left-handed pitcher Jackson Ferris (Dodgers No. 5), and shortstop Emil Morales (Dodgers No. 6). Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran (16) slides into third base for a triple against the Seattle Mariners in the first inning at Fenway Butler II-Imagn Images Rymer points to the Dodgers' lackluster production in left field, an accumulative minus-0.5 rWAR, and a .672 OPS at the position as a reason to acquire Duran. The former All-Star outfielder would also slide in at the top of the Los Angeles lineup, provide power, and be an elite table-setter for reigning MVP Shohei Ohtani. Duran is also under team control until 2028, giving the Dodgers a core of Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Teoscar Hernandez through the 2027 season. Advertisement Sean McAdam of reported on Tuesday that Boston, although willing to field calls for Duran, is asking for close-to-MLB-ready pitching. Rymer's trade package meets their asking price. Headlined by Dalton Rushing, the key to the deal is left-hander Jackson Ferris. Although only at Double-A, Ferris is just 21 years old and the Dodgers' number one pitching prospect after earning the organization's Pitcher of the Year award in 2024, after placing third in the Minors among pitchers age 20 or younger with 145 strikeouts in 126 2/3 innings and finishing the season with a 2.54 ERA in seven Double-A starts. With a fastball sitting comfortably in the mid-90s and a four-pitch repertoire, it should take little time for Ferris to make his Major League debut. Advertisement Rounding out the return is 18-year-old shortstop Emil Morales, who possesses plus power but is not expected to reach the majors until 2029. On the downside, Rymer believes the Dodgers' desire for another outfielder is not a need but more of a want. Los Angeles is likely looking to improve their starting pitching with Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, and Roki Sasaki all on the injured list, and if a similar package can land a top-tier arm, they will jump at the chance. Boston also may not want to add Rushing, another left-handed hitter, to their lineup. The Red Sox would also need to find a position for him, and right now, Carlos Narvaez is cemented at catcher, and top prospect Roman Anthony would assume the absence left by Duran. Cubs Trade Idea Lands Pirates' Paul Skenes in Chicago
After the Pittsburgh Pirates' poor start to 2025, the fanbase wonders what the front office will do with its best player. Of course, that player is starting pitcher Paul Skenes, 17th in Major League Baseball with 62 strikeouts and a top contender for this year's National League Cy Young Award. Advertisement Many clubs could be interested if the Pirates make Skenes available in trade discussions at the deadline. The Chicago Cubs are one of MLB's potent offenses, but the starting rotation has left much to be desired after injuries to Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga. On Thursday, Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer proposed a trade idea that would send Skenes to the Cubs to revamp their rotation. Rymer listed the Pirates' return as third baseman Matt Shaw, right-handed pitcher Cade Horton, and outfielder Owen Caissie. All three are top-five prospects in the Cubs' organization. Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11) observes batting practice before the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC LeClaire-Imagn Images 'Sustaining the Cubs has been an offense that leads MLB in scoring even without much help from Shaw, who has a .610 OPS to show for 77 plate appearances, ' Rymer wrote. Advertisement 'He is, therefore, an acceptable sacrifice, and ditto for Horton if it means putting Skenes in his place.' Although a trade for Skenes would be ideal for the Cubs, Rymer acknowledges that a deal of that magnitude is easier said than done. 'It's an iffy proposition, particularly given that the Pirates could potentially balk at the return,' wrote Rymer. 'Shaw has shown a ton of swing-and-miss at the major league level, while Horton is coming off an injury-marred year in the minors.' For the Cubs, acquiring Skenes with several years of control may apply even more pressure on the front office to extend outfielder Kyle Tucker, or reach a deal with him when he reaches free agency at the end of the season. Rival Teams Urged Not to Trade for Astros All-Star Framber Valdez
Despite trading All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker over the offseason, the Houston Astros opted to also run it back with veteran starting pitcher Framber Valdez. Whether or not Valdez is approaching the end of his time in Houston remains unclear. The Astros entered play Friday at 13-11, only a half-game out of first place in a mediocre AL West, and the veteran lefty can hit free agency this winter. Advertisement Some believe the Astros will buy at the trade deadline, with ESPN recently suggesting that Houston acquire Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe. Other fans and pundits think Joe Espada's club should weigh selling and accelerating their transitional period. Count Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer among those skeptical that teams should pursue Valdez. The two-time All-Star lefty enters play Friday with a 4.50 ERA and a disappointing 3.5 BB/9 ratio—his highest since a 3.9 mark in 2021—over five starts. 'If we were a rival team, these things would have us on guard,' Rymer wrote this week. Houston Astros starting pitcher Framber ValdezThomas Shea-Imagn Images Rymer also listed Valdez's trade stock as 'down' a month into the season. He gave the same grade to Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr., Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara, and Seattle Mariners starter Luis Castillo. Advertisement The slow start is slightly uncharacteristic for Valdez, who owns a 3.17 ERA across 24 March/April games (18 starts) since debuting in 2018. However, his 3.5 BB/9 is significantly up from 2.6 in 2022 and 2.8 a year ago, and his 8.7 hits per nine is easily his highest since becoming a full-time starter in 2020. That doesn't mean teams won't, and shouldn't pursue, Valdez as a rental option if he's available. He's a 31-year-old starter set to enter free agency, meaning he shouldn't cost too much ahead of the deadline. If the Astros do consider trading Valdez, chances are at least one team will ignore Rymer and make a serious play for the former Cy Young finalist. Proposed bill would require law enforcement in blue state to cooperate with ICE: 'A line of communication'
Minnesota lawmakers recently introduced a bill that would prevent state and local government agencies from not allowing employees to share immigration data requested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The bill also requires county attorneys to report any illegal immigrant arrested for a violent crime, even if they are not charged, and prohibits law enforcement from not cooperating with ICE. President Donald Trump, who campaigned for an immigration crackdown, loosened restrictions on ICE, allowing broader enforcement. 'Leave Now': Trump Admin Repurposes Controversial Cbp One App To Encourage Self-deportations Under H.F. 16, sponsored by state Rep. Max Rymer, R-North Branch, Minnesota law enforcement and government agencies would no longer be allowed to create ordinances, regulations and policies that "limit or prohibit government employees from communicating with federal officials about the immigration status of individuals." "This bill accomplishes two main things," Rymer wrote in a statement to Fox News Digital on Thursday. "The first is that it mandates any illegal immigrant arrested on suspicion of a violent crime…. Murder, Assault, Domestic assault, Crimes committed for the benefit of a gang, Robbery, Carjacking, Kidnapping, [and] Criminal sexual conduct. Even in cases where the county attorney elects not to prosecute, [they will] be reported to ICE." Read On The Fox News App "Second, this bill prevents state and local government entities from actively prohibiting, restricting, or interfering with federal immigration authorities in carrying out federal immigration enforcement," Rymer added. He noted the "brave" testimony of Charles Thayer, "whose mother was beheaded in broad daylight by a Cuban illegal immigrant with multiple felony convictions," Rymer said. "Why was he here? This common-sense bill could've prevented her senseless death." Trump Ice Unleashes On Biden Admin After Arrests Surpass All 2024 Data: 'Cooking The Books' The bill, which was introduced in February, went before the Minnesota House of Representatives in the Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee on Wednesday, FOX 9 Minneapolis reported. It will be sent to the House Elections Finance and Government Operations Committee for further discussion following a roll-call vote. The Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL)-led Minnesota Senate and Gov. Tim Walz will need to be on board for the bill to be signed into law, a tough feat considering the state's promise to remain a "sanctuary state," and not cooperate with federal ICE efforts. Last year, DFL legislators introduced the North STAR Act to make Minnesota a sanctuary state. Those in support of the bill cited the need for the state to follow federal standards on immigration reform. However, critics warned the large scope could be used to target minority communities. Ben Gleekel with the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota told FOX 9 the bill could make Minnesotans "less safe." Click Here For More Immigration Coverage "Non-citizens and citizen victims of domestic violence and trafficking will suffer the most," Gleekel said. "They will not risk calling local law enforcement to report a crime, if they know that it means their families will be separated or that they themselves might be apprehended. Prohibiting entities that know their communities best from maintaining clear boundaries between state and federal government will erode the important trust that exists between our immigrant communities and local law enforcement… ." ICE is already outpacing the total number of arrests in 2024, the agency said Wednesday. The agency also found tens of thousands of cases that were recorded as arrests actually resulted in releases into American communities. Walz did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
