Padres predicted to land $122M 2-time All-Star after missing out on Jarren Duran
According to The Athletic's Dennis Lin the Padres are trying to get Duran, and he is seemingly their preferred choice on the trade block. However, the Red Sox need pitching, and the Padres may not match up in that regard. The Red Sox are going to want a controllable big league pitcher if they trade Duran.
If the Padres cannot get Duran, they will have to pivot, and Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer predicted they would land Steven Kwan of the Cleveland Guardians.
"The Cleveland Guardians will 'at the very least will listen' if other teams call after the two-time All-Star, according to Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan of ESPN," wrote Rymer. "With only two years of club control left, he is at that stage of his career where a Cleveland player pretty much automatically becomes trade bait. The 27-year-old is the best defensive left fielder in the game, as well as the best pure hitter this side of Luis Arraez. If the two of them were to team up in San Diego, the Padres would have MLB's two best contact merchants atop their lineup."
Kwan is a two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glover. He would instantly make an impact for the Padres. He is slashing .288/.352/.398 with 27 extra-base hits on the year. He is under club control through 2027 and is projected to earn a six-year, $122 million deal when he hits the open market."The acquisition cost for Kwan would not be cheap, but Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller has a long track record of not being afraid to take big swings," wrote Rymer. "And while his farm system doesn't go deep, it does have two elite prospects in shortstop Leo De Vries and catcher Ethan Salas."

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Blake Perkins singled home the winning run in the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Sunday. Milwaukee erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring in each of the final two innings to avoid the sweep. The Brewers have been swept just once, in their opening series of the season at Yankee Stadium. The Brewers remain tied for first in the NL Central with the Chicago Cubs, who come to Milwaukee for a three-game series beginning Monday. The Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 on Sunday. Gibson intentionally walked Jackson Chourio to load the bases. Perkins then lofted a 3-2 pitch well over the head of center fielder Dane Myers. Perkins had scored the tying run in the eighth after entering as a pinch-runner, stealing second and coming home on Andrew Vaughn's two-out, ground-rule double off Ronny Henriquez. Boston closer Aroldis Chapman thinks he'll return soon after back spasm forces him out
BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman thinks he'll be able to pitch in a couple of days after walking off the mound with a back spasm in the eighth inning of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. 'It's just a spasm. It should be gone in a couple of days,' he said through a team translator after the Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 for a series victory. In to face the top of the Dodgers' order, his velocity was noticeably down to mid-90 mph on his fastball instead of the high 90s to low 100s. Manager Alex Cora and a trainer came out to the mound to visit him after Shohei Ohtani flew out to the left-field warning track. Jordan Hicks entered and got out of a two-on, one-out mess when Teoscar Hernández lined to second and Ceddanne Rafaela dove to the bag, beating Hyeseong Kim for double play. Hicks pitched the ninth for his second save. 'Tight back. He should be OK,' Cora said of Chapman. Both Chapman and Cora said they didn't think there would be a trip to the injured list. 'I was definitely determined to stay out there, work through it,' Chapman said. 'Alex thought it would be better, smarter that we just 'call it' to avoid anything down the line.' The 37-year-old Chapman is having one of his better seasons in the majors with 18 saves and a 1.30 ERA, with much better control. He's walked just 11 in 41 1/3 innings.
