Al Hilal Sanctioned After Super Cup Withdrawal

Rana Atef The Saudi Arabian Football Federation's Disciplinary Committee has announced its decision regarding Al Hilal's unexpected withdrawal from the upcoming Saudi Super Cup. The club has been fined 500,000 SAR and will be banned from participating in the next edition of the tournament. Al Hilal officially apologized for pulling out of the competition, which will be held in Hong Kong from August 19, with the final set for August 23. The club cited intense season scheduling and the need to grant players rest following their involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup. With Al Hilal stepping aside, Al Ahli Jeddah steps in to take their place. They'll face Al Qadsiah in the semi-final, while Al Nassr will clash with Al Ittihad the day before. Meanwhile, in Germany, Al Hilal's pre-season camp is underway, with most of the foreign players reporting for duty — except one name stood out in absence: Portuguese midfielder Rúben Neves. According to Arriyadiyah, Neves was granted three extra days of rest by head coach Simone Inzaghi. After a demanding summer — one that saw him lift the UEFA Nations League trophy with Portugal on June 8 against Spain, and then fight through to the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup with Hilal before falling to Fluminense on July 4 — a brief pause was well earned. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Rúben Neves serves as pallbearer at Diogo Jota's funeral after Al Hilal's Club World Cup match

Rúben Neves and João Cancelo flew to Portugal following Al Hilal's 2-1 defeat to Fluminense in the Club World Cup quarterfinals for the funeral of former teammate Diogo Jota. Neves served as a pallbearer for his close friend who died in a car crash with his brother André Silva in Spain on Thursday. Jota was 28 years old, Silva was 26. Advertisement Prior to the match with Fluminense, Neves posted a tribute to Jota on social media. "Wherever you are, I know you're going to read this, we've never been one for this sort of thing and maybe now I'll regret it a little," Neves wrote on an Instagram post. "But you know what you mean to me just as much as I know what I am to you." "When I go to the national team, you'll still be by my side at the dinner table, on the bus, on the plane... you'll always be there with me, as usual," he continued. "We'll keep laughing, making plans, sharing our lives with each other. I'll make sure you're always there and I'll make sure your family never lacks anything while you're there, far away but thinking of us, waiting for us..." During a moment of silence before the Club World Cup match began, Neves and Cancelo broke down with emotion for their former teammate. Players and staff from Liverpool, for whom Jota played in the Premier League, also traveled to Portugal for the funeral. Among those in attendance were captain Virgil van Dijk and manager Arne Slot. Jota originally joined Liverpool in 2020, scoring 47 goals with 15 assists in his 79 starts with the team, which won the Premier League title for the 2024-25 season. The cause of the crash that killed Jota and Silva is still ongoing. Police do not know who was driving the car and whether or not a blown tire caused the crash. The vehicle, a Lamborghini, was in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene. Liverpool and Portugal Players Join Family in Mourning Diogo Jota and His Brother at Funeral

Players from Liverpool and Portugal's national team joined family and friends for the funeral of their teammate Diogo Jota and his brother on Saturday, two days after the siblings died in a car crash in Spain. Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk arrived carrying a red floral arrangement in the shape of a soccer shirt with Jota's No. 20 in white. Liverpool teammate Andrew Robertson carried a similar arrangement with the No. 30, the number worn by Jota's brother, André Silva, who played for Portuguese club Penafiel. Coach Arne Slot was part of the Liverpool contingent. Portugal international Rúben Neves served as a pallbearer for Jota a day after playing for at the Club World Cup in the United States. He and Jota were teammates at Wolverhampton earlier in their careers. Neves and João Cancelo attended the funeral after playing in Orlando on Friday, when their Al Hilal was eliminated by Fluminense. Both players had wept when a minute of silence was held before the quarterfinal match. The service was held at Igreja Matriz church in the Portuguese town of Gondomar, where Jota had a home. Church bells pealed at 10:00 a.m. local time as the funeral started. Pallbearers carried the caskets of both brothers from a chapel next door and into the church. Relatives and hundreds of friends and acquaintances, including players of the local Gondomar FC where Jota started playing at age 9, then followed. Portugal's national team coach Roberto Martínez and several other top Portuguese players also attended, including Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias and Manchester United's Bruno Fernándes. 'These are really, really sad days, as you can imagine,' Martínez said. "But today we showed we are a large, close family. ... Their spirit will be with us forever.' The bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda, led the funeral mass. The church was filled to capacity and a couple of dozen people followed the service via loudspeaker from outside. Afterwards, the coffins were carried to the cemetery next to the church. Jota, 28, and the 25-year-old Silva were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain early Thursday after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight and burst into flames. The brothers were reportedly heading to catch a boat from northern Spain to go to England where Jota was to rejoin with Liverpool after a summer break. Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have been caused by a blown tire. Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family. A wake was held for them on Friday. Jota's death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year. Their loss led to an outpouring of condolences from the soccer world and Portuguese officials.
