Gov. Stein announces NC S.A.F.E. Week of Action to promote firearm safety

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCT) — Governor Josh Stein has announced that June 1-7, 2025, is the North Carolina S.A.F.E. Week of Action. This Week of Action, sponsored by the N.C. Department of Public Safety, is a week to unite communities, families, and organizations statewide to promote the lifesaving importance of safe firearm storage. 'Safely storing firearms can be the difference between life and death,' Governor Josh Stein said. 'When people understand the risks, they are more likely to take action to protect themselves and their families. That's what S.A.F.E. week is all about – keeping people safe from gun violence.' FBI data says that the rate of gun theft from vehicles is three times as high as it was 10 years ago. This ranks 10 North Carolina cities in the top 100 U.S. cities for reported gun thefts from vehicles in 2022. To help reduce gun violence and needless tragedies, Governor Stein proposed more than $2.2 million for safe storage in his budget proposal. 'Every conversation and every gun lock distributed brings us closer to a safer North Carolina,' North Carolina Department of Public Safety Deputy Secretary William Lassiter said. 'Our collective efforts are reaching families across the state and making a real impact.' Many organizations throughout North Carolina are hosting community events to emphasize the importance if safe gun storage during the Week of Action. A complete list of events can be found here. The NC S.A.F.E. campaign has earned more than 89 million ad impressions, nearly 332,000 visits to the NC S.A.F.E. website, and has distributed 130,000 free gun locks to help North Carolinians safely store their guns. There is also a NC S.A.F.E. for Schools program that helps school districts share safe storage resources with families in their community. Pensacola man arrested on 5 counts of trafficking fentanyl

A Pensacola man has been arrested on five counts of trafficking fentanyl following a six month investigation. Christopher Alonse Cobb, Jr., 20, was arrested April 16 following an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Agency High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Drug Task Force, and with funding from Florida's State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication (S.A.F.E.) grant. The investigation began in October 2024 after agents identified Cobb as a fentanyl distributer within a drug trafficking organization. Between October 2024 and April 2025, FDLE and HIDTA task force members witnessed Cobb selling fentanyl during five controlled drug purchases. Cobb sold nearly a quarter of a pound of fentanyl during the controlled purchases operations, according to FDLE. FDLE and task force agents conducted two search warrants the day of his arrest and seized a stolen 9mm Glock 23 pistol, a 50-round pistol drum, ammunition and multiple cellphones. Cobb was booked into the Escambia County Jail and is being held without bond pending first appearance. The case will be prosecuted by the Office of the State Attorney, First Judicial Circuit. FDLE Pensacola and the DEA HIDTA Drug Task Force are investigating the case. The Florida Highway Patrol assisted in the arrest. The investigation remains active. The S.A.F.E. grant program designed to combat illegal fentanyl activity through grant-funded reimbursements for pre-approved fentanyl-related investigative operations. It was established by the Florida Legislature in 2023 and has resulted in more than 1,400 arrests and law enforcement seizing more than 400 pounds of fentanyl, more than 480 pounds of cocaine, more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana and more than 470 firearms. Las Vegas valley organization honoring victims during National Crime Victims' Week

LAS VEGAS — National Crime Victims' Rights Week is a time to honor victims and survivors in the Las Vegas valley while also recognizing the dedicated professionals and volunteers who provide essential support and services. This year's theme is 'Kinship,' emphasizing that shared humanity should be the center of support. 'It's very important that we highlight the pervasive issue of domestic violence, as well as other crimes like sexual assault and human trafficking that are happening right now in our communities,' Beth Flory, CEO of S.A.F.E., said. Each year, thousands of people become victims of crime. In Nevada, law enforcement investigated nearly 13-thousand incidents of 'violent' crime last year, including rape, murder, robbery, and aggravated assault according to the FBI's Crime Data site. 'In Nevada, there were 49 homicides due to domestic violence, and the vast majority of them did occur in Clark County,' Flory said. For more than 30 years, S.A.F.E. House has offered support and services for victims and survivors of domestic violence and other crimes. The organization provides shelter, counseling, advocacy, and community outreach to help end abuse in Las Vegas and beyond. 'Ensuring that victims know that services like ours exist, that they can escape they're situation that they're facing… that our victims have the ability to get out of their situation into safe and affordable housing in our community,' Flory said. 'Ensuring that victims know their rights that they have because of Marsy's Law in 2018, they have many rights afforded to them through the court system.' If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you can call S.A.F.E. House's 24-hour crisis hotline at (702) 564-3227. For more information, click here.
