An unflinching Jury judges Rangers on Takeover, transfers, wildcard manager shout and a claim about rivals
The big story down Govan way is dominating the agenda Rangers in safe hands with their new American owners? CRAIG SWAN: Rangers have plenty of catching up to do on and off the park, but things can turn quickly on the field in Glasgow as Ange Postecoglou proved at Celtic recently. SCOTT BURNS: That might be the money they are putting into the club but that won't all go to transfers. I will go into strengthening the infrastructure. It is down to whether they can get the maximum out of what they have. It would be a big ask to topple Celtic. MICHAEL GANNON: It's a decent start but it's going to take time and long term investment to get to the top of the tree in Scotland and it will be even tougher to reach the group stages. Three qualifiers is a big ask and there's already a ton of work required to be ready. Year one might be about building solid foundations. Are Rangers in safe hands with their new American owners? CRAIG: The only gauge anyone has at this moment is their past work at other clubs and most of that seems to be in order, so you'd say yes at this stage. SCOTT: Who knows? Rangers need a fresh start. The new owners are providing that and the proof will be in the pudding as to what they do. MICHAEL: They are talking a good game. It's now time to see the proof. It looks like they want to make money on their investment but realise it will take success to do so. That should be good news for Rangers fans. Would Francesco Farioli be a good shout at Rangers manager? CRAIG: Managing Ajax is a pressure job at a high-profile club, so that box is ticked and he's well spoken about by people such as Arne Slot. SCOTT:I genuinely believe it is between Russell Martin and Davide Ancelotti. There has been too much smoke and mirrors, Steven Gerrard hasn't been in the equation for weeks. MICHAEL: The Italian is a strong character and has a big reputation. The Ajax collapse and fall out with the club's officials might be a red flag to some but he's certainly his own man and would be an interesting appointment. CRAIG: Celtic will have their plans and do their own thing. Brendan Rodgers wants more progression and ideas will have been in place for ages. It's unlikely to make any difference to their thinking. SCOTT: Celtic just need to concentrate on making themselves better. If they do that then they will remain as the standard bearer in Scotland. MICHAEL: It will be business as usual but they'd be daft to ignore it. Celtic's baseline is set at being better than Rangers and if things are ramping up at Ibrox, the Hoops will need to respond to stay ahead of the game. It's a big summer at Celtic Park.

Scott McTominay becomes first Scot to claim Serie A award as league chief calls him ‘devastating'
He was already enjoying the best goalscoring season of his career - now it's got even better TOP SCOTT Scott McTominay becomes first Scot to claim Serie A award as league chief calls him 'devastating' SCOTT MCTOMINAY's amazing year in Italy continues. The former Manchester United midfielder joined Napoli for £25.5million last summer and just this week he has added another feather to his cap. Advertisement 1 Scott McTominay has been in top form for Napoli of late Credit: Reuters McTominay was already enjoying the best goalscoring season of his career by the time he broke the 63-year-old record set by Denis Law for the number of goals by a Scot in a Serie A campaign. On top of that he's had pizzas named after him, fans have gotten tattoos in his honour and there's even a shrine dedicated to him. Last weekend he helped Napoli put one hand on the Scudetto with a solid display in a 1-0 win over Lecce, with Billy Gilmour coming on to play a cameo role. That result means Antonio Conte's men went six points clear of Inter Milan (the gap has since reduced back to three). Advertisement McTominay's performances throughout April have led to him being named the league's player of the month. He becomes the first Scot to win the award - despite the success of the likes of Law, Graeme Souness and Lewis Ferguson before him. The 28-year-old bagged five goals across April and will pick up the fan-voted award this weekend when he takes to the pitch for his team's game against Genoa. On the back of his displays, Serie A's chief executive described McTominay's impact on the Italian top flight as "devastating". Advertisement League CEO Luigi De Siervo said: "Scott McTominay's impact on the league has been 'devastating', proving to be an absolute top player, the ideal prototype of the 'box-to-box' midfielder, decisive in both phases of the game. "The five goals he scored in April alone put Napoli back on top of the table and allowed the player to set his own personal record for goals in a season. 'How can you sell him?' Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blasts Man Utd for Scott McTominay's transfer to Napoli "He is the first Scotsman to win the Serie A Player of the Month award, an award that has been won a total of 11 times, out of 53 editions, by a Napoli player, a club that holds the absolute record in this special classification." A statement from the league read: "The EA SPORTS FC Player Of The Month award for April has been assigned to Napoli player Scott McTominay. The trophy will be presented during the pre-match of Napoli vs Genoa, scheduled for Sunday 11th May 2025 at 8.45pm at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium in Naples. Advertisement "The fans' votes on combined with individual statistical data, determined Scott McTominay as the winner, beating champions like Diao (Como), Ndoye (Bologna), Ondrejka (Parma), Rovella (Lazio), Soulè (Roma). "The six best players of the month have been selected taking into account the advanced analysis of Stats Perform, created from the tracking data recorded with the Hawk-Eye system. "The rating system, patented in 2010 with K-Sport and scientifically validated, considers not only statistical data and technical events, but also positional data. "This makes it possible to analyse crucial aspects such as movement without the ball and thus optimal movements, game choices, and the contribution to the technical and physical efficiency of the team, which allow for an objective and qualitative evaluation of the performance. Standing in solidarity
REPORT: TIM SCOTT / PHOTO: GREGOR RICHARDSON Protesters gathered in the Octagon by the hundreds at the weekend to stand in solidarity with the transgender community. Saturday's rally was organised by the Dunedin branch of the International Socialist Organisation Aotearoa, in collaboration with other groups. Dunedin branch committee member and protest co-organiser Oscar Bartle said hundreds of people attended. "The turnout was a lot higher than expected, which was really cool. I think people have really had enough and are ready to stand up and fight back." The mood was "really inspirational", he said. The rally was organised in response to New Zealand First's introduction of a member's Bill to define the terms "woman" and "man" in law. The Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill announced last month proposed to define "woman" as "an adult human biological female" and "man" as "an adult human biological male", in the Legislation Act 2019. Member's Bills are usually only debated in the House if selected at random from the ballot.

Jury passes Kevin Thelwell verdict as big time Rangers claim chimes with theory about Celtic dominance
ANDY NEWPORT: Yes but that's just human nature. The more something happens, the less sparkle it has. But make no mistake, Celtic have been a dazzling, dominant force for most of the last decade and deserve huge praise for that. SCOTT BURNS: He is probably right. You only have to look at the number of recent Trebles Celtic have won. Yes, it is difficult to do but it is also easier when you are lightyears ahead of the opposition. FRASER WILSON: Probably. But Celtic have a big Aberdeen sized obstacle still to overcome before they land another one. Should they do that then they deserve to be held in the same esteem as all the other Treble winning sides. In top gear this Hoops side have been sensational. ANDY: On the face of it yes but the proof will be in the pudding. Rangers' recruitment record has been abject for far too long. It's Thelwell's task now to deliver vast improvements. SCOTT: He is an experienced operator and fits the bill of what is needed. We will only see his true credentials when he is in the post because Rangers will be very different from everything else he has been involved in. FRASER: He is clearly comfortable working at huge clubs but it's the need for instant results at Rangers - while their arch rivals have a big head start - that makes this job the toughest he has surely ever faced. He needs to work wonders this summer starting with getting the right manager in place. ANDY: Hibs have the momentum and an attacking verve that Aberdeen and United can't match. I fancy David Gray's men to get the job done with games to spare. SCOTT: A lot will depend on this weekend. If Hibs beat Aberdeen then they would be clear favourites. If Aberdeen win then it is game on for them and United. FRASER: Hibs goal difference essentially gives them a four point lead and on a 17-game unbeaten run David Gray's side have all the momentum. A win at Pittodrie today would make them hard to catch. I fancy them to get the job done. ANDY: Daizen Maeda is the outstanding nominee but Parkhead teammates Callum McGregor and Nicolas Kuhn as well as Rangers' Vaclav Cerny have had impressive campaigns too. SCOTT: Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kuhn , Rocky Bushiri and Simon Murray. FRASER : Daizen Maeda and Callum McGregor are obvious candidates. The best of the other clubs? I'd throw in Vaclav Cerny and Martin Boyle just ahead of Simon Murray.

Baltimore mayor fights back against attacks on DEI initiatives with ‘Definitely Earned It' campaign
Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'The Left's divisive focus on DEI policies undermines decades of progress toward true equality,' White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said in a statement. 'The Trump administration rejects this backward thinking and will pursue an agenda that lifts everyone up with the chance to achieve the American Dream.' Advertisement Scott, 40, said in an interview with The Associated Press that he wants Black History Month to be an opportunity to set the record straight on DEI policies, which he views as enacting American values. Here are excerpts from that conversation: Why — in your view — are Trump and Republicans blaming DEI for government failures and working to eliminate it from government agencies? SCOTT: 'When we had a horrendous tragedy here in Baltimore — we had a container ship run into a bridge, and the bridge is completely knocked down — we lost six lives. The fact that immediately, instantaneously, you had some of these far-right wing racists saying that it's my fault — 'It's the DEI mayor's fault, diversity, equity and inclusion caused this.' Well, let's break down how ridiculous that is. One, the bridge was built before I was born. Two, when you look at when that bridge was built here in Maryland, I can assure you that very few people that look like me and very few people who were not white males worked on building that bridge. Three, the ship that caused it isn't from this country, let alone operated by some Black person.' Advertisement 'We know what they mean when they say it to women. We know what it means when they say it to people from the LGBTQ+ community.' 'What these folks who unfortunately think that way think is that unless you are a straight white male from a certain background — because I want my poor white brothers and sisters to understand that they're not talking about them either, right — unless you are from a certain background, wealthy historic families with straight white Christian men, then you should never be in a position of power and that your thoughts and opinions don't matter. And that is the saddest part of it all.' What do you make of Trump's blaming of a recent plane and helicopter crash on DEI? SCOTT: 'When you're in a moment of tragedy of that magnitude, leaders are supposed to lead and tell things as they are, not as we want them to be, not as a certain section of the country wants to hear from us, not for an agenda. Leaders lead in that moment. And it's unfortunate that we're discussing DEI when it comes to a horrendous tragedy that caused dozens of people to lose their lives.' How should supporters of diversity and Black history respond to attacks on Black history? SCOTT: 'You have to fight in every single way with every breath in your body until there's no more breath, no more blood in your body.' 'That's why I decided to do a 'Definitely Earned It' campaign as we go through Black History Month, because we have to be bigger and Blacker and louder than ever. We cannot allow that darkness to try to come and overtake our light, because darkness can't overtake light, only light can overcome darkness. Don't run away, don't hide, don't shrink in the moment, be who you are and push back in every single way that you can.' Advertisement What does the 'Definitely Earned It' campaign look like? SCOTT: 'Typically, every Black History Month, I normally have a video and then we go through the month highlighting people. We're going to take that to the next level this year and really be highlighting folks, obviously starting here in Baltimore, with a significant role when it comes to Black history in this country. We'll be noting that these people weren't DEI — well, that they were DEI, but DEI in the sense that they definitely earned it. They earned every single thing that they accomplished because it wasn't given to them. We can show people what it truly means when you have to work 10 times as hard, when you have to work through systems that were built up for you to fail, when you have to make sure that you leave the door open for other folks coming behind you. And in my case, DEI means duly elected incumbent, but I also definitely earned it. 'And we're going to continue to highlight those folks throughout the month through every mode of communication that we have. We're showing the folks who are right now wondering, 'Will government still celebrate Black History Month?', 'Will everyone just run and hide because they're not going to be doing it at the national level?' No, we're going to do it, and we're going to be proud of doing it.'
