Nets display how scouting department approached 2025 NBA Draft

The Brooklyn Nets went into the 2025 NBA Draft with an interesting strategy as they found a way to get five first-round picks and use all of them in the same class. Brooklyn seems to be sold on rebuilding the franchise through the Draft and understandably so, but the Nets' content team showed what the conversations were like behind the scenes. "One of our slogans is disagree and commit. That's front and center in our war room. The meaning behind that is that it's healthy to disagree," general manager Sean Marks said during the fourth episode of the team's SCOUT series. The web series has been giving Nets fans a behind-the-scenes look into how Brooklyn's scouting department prepared for the 2025 NBA Draft, including the debates. "It's healthy to debate. If there's no debate and there's no disagreement, then I think something must be wrong," Marks continued. "We've all seen players in different life cycles at different points in their careers and so forth. So, we should be asking ourselves questions of who he reminds me of and, what would I question about that person?" One of the themes that followed the Nets after the conclusion of the 2025 Draft was whether Brooklyn overthought its picks too much or didn't do enough the opportunity they had with multiple first-round picks. The Nets taking guard Egor Demin with the eighth overall pick in the Draft appeared to surprise many people covering the draft, but this episode attempts to explain the thought process behind Brooklyn selecting Demin as high as they did. "You want to see if guys are fighters, if they care about winning as a team, competing as a team, like not just to win a game, but give yourself a chance," Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez said when explaining the general mindset of the team. "That's what competitive is, especially in this world. So, you know, we can see that in players and try to figure it out in different ways." Nets embracing international scouting ahead of 2025 NBA Draft

Nets embracing international scouting ahead of 2025 NBA Draft The Brooklyn Nets are one of the few teams that have more than one first-round pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft that begins in Brooklyn on June 25. As a result, Brooklyn will most likely be bringing in multiple prospects to build around for the future and those prospects could come from America as well as abroad. 'The game has become so global. To find a guy in some of these places could be massive for your franchise, you have to go wherever the talent is,' BJ Johnson, assistant general manager for the Nets, said in Episode 3 of Brooklyn's 'SCOUT' docuseries. The series has taken fans through a behind-the-scenes look at what the Nets' scouting process is like and this episode took the conversation to international scouting. 'Talent can come from anywhere, you always want to be at the forefront of that,' Johnson continued. 'The games are different, the strategies are different, and the pace of play is different. But, there are certain things that, regardless, you need a player to have: size for position, the versatility of skill set, the toughness, the competitiveness, the grit, those kinds of things. All that kind of sets the baseline. From there, you can kind of pick out the fine details.' The episode focuses on the journey that Johnson made to Munich, Germany where he worked with Nets international scouts Simone Casali and Simon Jatsch. Casali has been an international scout for Brooklyn since 2015 while Jatsch is more of an analytics international scout that has been working with the team since the 2023-24 campaign. 'I think understanding the difference between the leagues is one of the most important things, because it's like comparing conferences in the NCAA, every league has a different style,' Casali said. 'Spanish league is more physical and plays bigger. German League, they're basically playing very, very small. The French league is more athletic. So every league has their own personality. So I think understanding the difference between the style of play in Europe and the States and college and NBA is one of the hardest things to do, to put everything in perspective.' What makes this episode interesting is that one of the prospects that the Nets could take in the upcoming Draft is French forward Noa Essengue, who plays for Ratiopharm Ulm, a professional basketball team in Germany. Essengue has recently been projected to be selected by the Nets with the eighth overall pick by Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman so it seems like Brooklyn is one step ahead on scouting a possible addition to the roster.

SCOUT shows how Nets asst. GM BJ Johnson began his basketball dream

SCOUT shows how Nets asst. GM BJ Johnson began his basketball dream The Brooklyn Nets have four first-round picks to use in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft and from now until June, they will have to figure out the best players to select. Brooklyn has been giving fans a behind-the-scenes look into what the scouting process has looked like with their SCOUT series and episode two is giving a glimpse into one of the key figures in the scouting process. "My hope was to always walk on at Villanova because that was the school I really wanted to be at. When it was time for tryouts, they couldn't find my name, they couldn't find my paperwork," Nets assistant general manager BJ Johnson said of his time at Villanova. Johnson tried to walk on at the school, but it seemed like the team didn't want him until things suddenly changed. "I remember after our women's (basketball) practice, I would have to run the stairs in the pavilion. I saw the men's team coming out to practice and I see them pointing up to us, like, oh, they're gonna kick me out of practice," Johnson continued. "They tell me to come downstairs. They invited me to be on the men's team. At that point, no tryout, nothing. It was just like that." Johnson, who played for legendary Villanova head coach Jay Wright, was able to make the Villanova basketball team as a walk-on after being cut from the team after tryouts during his freshman season. Johnson went on to play three seasons at Villanova before graduating with a bachelor's degree in computer science and a minor in Chinese prior to beginning his post-playing basketball career with USA Basketball in 2005. "I tried out my freshman year, but I got cut. I was really disappointed because I worked so hard and I thought I was going to make it. But it wasn't the right time for me. Looking back, it really was the best thing that could have happened to me. Because it gave me the chance to meet a lot of people and get involved in a number of different activities," Johnson said in 2002 in an interview with Villanova's newspaper.
