Why Shin Yamada chose Celtic transfer and ultimate ambition

Celtic have completed the signing of the £1.2 million, 25-year-old from Kawasaki Frontale and he gave his farewells to his Japanese club this week. He made his international debut for Japan last week in the East Asian E-1 Championship with his nation picking a home-based squad. And after his final appearance for his club in the Emperor's Cup match against SC Sagamihara, Yamada revealed why he chose Celtic. He said: "My ultimate ambition is to play for Japan at the World Cup next year and help us win the trophy. Read more: "And I thought my best chance of having an opportunity of doing that would be to transfer overseas. It was my own decision. "Playing for this club for the final time was strange because I have felt nothing but warmth and it had become a part of my life for the last two-and-a-half years. It hasn't really dawned on me yet that it was my last game, but I felt the love from the fans. "I made my debut for Japan recently and now I am aiming for further growth in my career in my new environment. "I understand I need to improve my overall game at my new club. I don't want to set a target for how many goals I will score, but I know I need to score more goals." Yamada has managed just two goals in the J League this season, with his last one coming back in March.

Celtic-bound Yamada in emotional Kawasaki farewell message

Yamada said his goodbyes to Kawasaki after their penalty shootout loss to third-tier outfit SC Sagamihara in the cup earlier today. "When I played against Kashima Antlers (on July 6), it had already been decided," he told local media. Read more: "Yes (I was emotional), Taiki (Yamada) was there too, and players came to see me too. It had already been decided at that time. "I feel like I've become more emotional! I definitely feel like I cry more easily. "Today was a game, however, so I had mixed emotions. I was a bit embarrassed to be speaking in front of everyone there, so the tears didn't come." Yamada continued: "When I joined Kawasaki Frontale, I had a desire to go overseas. I thought that if I didn't make that decision, I wouldn't be able to get any closer to my goal of participating in the World Cup and winning it in Japan. So that's the decision I came to. "Of course, there are a lot of things that happen... I was hesitant... But I had no doubts about going (to Celtic)." Yamada has scored just four goals for Kawasaki in all competitions this year, although in 2024, he found the net 22 times. Celtic will be hoping he can rediscover his shooting boots once he makes the move to Parkhead.

Transfer wrap: Shin Yamada on course for Celtic move after Kawasaki Frontale exit

Shin Yamada appears to be on his way to Celtic after Kawasaki Frontale announced his departure. The J-League side revealed that the 25-year-old is leaving to join an overseas club, without naming the Scottish champions, who have been linked with the Japanese forward. Yamada will say goodbye to Kawasaki Frontale fans after their cup match against SC Sagamihara on Wednesday. A statement on the Japanese club's website read: "We would like to inform you that Shin Yamada will be leaving the team at the end of today's activity in order to complete the necessary procedures to enable him to transfer to a club overseas. "We will notify you further regarding future plans as soon as they are officially decided. "In addition, after the Emperor's Cup third-round match against SC Sagamihara, which is being held today, Shin Yamada will give a speech to the supporters." Bournemouth have completed the signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic on a deal until June 2030. The 25-year-old has been at Stamford Bridge since joining from Major League Soccer side New England Revolution in 2023 and made 31 first-team appearances for the Blues. Petrovic enjoyed a successful loan spell at Ligue 1 club Strasbourg last season and has now joined the Cherries for a reported £25 million (€28.9m), signing a five-year contract at the Vitality Stadium. "I'm really happy to be here," the Serbia international said. "I came to Bournemouth because I want to grow and I want to play at the best level. "Together with this club, with these facilities, I think we can achieve it. I want to help the team get the results, improve every day and be a better player." Bournemouth had Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan from Chelsea last season. The Spain international has since joined Arsenal on a permanent basis, while Cherries back-up and Republic of Ireland international Mark Travers signed for Everton on Tuesday.
