NCAA Softball Committee Chair Kurt McGuffin explains why Texas A&M is No. 1 over Oklahoma Show Caption Hide Caption Legally blind pitcher Jenica Matos to play D1 softball The Cheshire High School star in Connecticut can't see home plate but threw three no-hitters last year and will play Division I for the Red Storm. Texas A&M softball is the No. 1 seed in the NCAA softball tournament for the first time ever. The Aggies finished third in the SEC standings during the regular season but reached the SEC Softball Tournament championship game against Oklahoma. However, with the game being washed out due to inclement weather, Texas A&M could not prove it could defeat the defending champions just yet. REQUIRED READING: NCAA softball tournament format: How bracket works in 2025 Texas A&M finished the season ranked No. 1 in RPI and hoped that it would be enough to get them the No. 1 overall seed over the Sooners, who won the SEC regular season championship. NCAA Softball Committee Chair Kurt McGuffin talked to ESPN's Holly Rowe during the Selection Show to discuss why the Aggies earned the No. 1 seed. "I think what sets apart Texas A&M was 19 top 25 wins, which is No. 1 in the country," McGuffin said. "They also had two quality nonconference wins vs. Florida State and Texas Tech. I think those were the two pieces that set them for the No. 1 seed." Texas A&M will open the Bryan-College Station Regional by hosting Saint Francis (PA) at 3:30 p.m. ET on May 16. The Aggies will also host Marist and Liberty. If they advance, they are poised to play the winner of the Eugene Regional and No. 16 Oregon.

6 Oklahoma Sooners earn All-SEC Honors

6 Oklahoma Sooners earn All-SEC Honors The Oklahoma Sooners completed their first season in the SEC, winning the regular season title and earning their first SEC tournament win on Thursday over No. 9 LSU. It's been a year of transition after Oklahoma lost several seniors after last season. But Patty Gasso reloaded through the transfer portal and the high school ranks to help Oklahoma to first place and stay within the top five of the nation all season long. After a successful first season in the SEC, six Oklahoma Sooners earned SEC honors led by Patty Gasso's 16th Conference Coach of the Year award. Sam Landry, who transferred to Oklahoma for her senior year, won SEC Newcomer of the Year after going 18-4 during the regular season and leading the Sooners pitching staff. Landry was named SEC Pitcher of the Week three times. She's thrown 15 complete games, including a one-hit effort in the win over LSU on Wednesday. Selected to the All-SEC first team were Landry, third baseman Nelly McEnroe-Marinas, and outfielder Kasidi Pickering. Pickering is second on the Sooners in batting average, home runs, and RBIs this season and has played stellar defense in the outfield. McEnroe-Marinas is in her second year with the Sooners but her first year as a starter and has been fantastic at the plate and in the field. She's hit .340 with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs. True freshman Gabbie Garcia was named to the All-SEC second team after hitting .354 and leading the Sooners in home runs with 15 and RBIs with 47. During the year, she had a run of five straight games with a home run, something that hasn't been done by a freshman since Jocelyn Alo. Garcia was also named to the All-SEC defensive team for her work at shortstop. She had just three errors on 152 chances and recorded 58 putouts and 91 assists this season. Along with Garcia on the All-SEC defensive team was transfer second baseman Ailana Agbayani. Agbayani recorded a .993 fielding percentage, with just one error on 153 chances in 2025. The Oklahoma Sooners will take on Arkansas in the SEC Softball Tournament semifinals on Friday at 3 p.m. CT. Oklahoma Sooners defeat LSU 4-1 in SEC Softball Tournament

Oklahoma Sooners defeat LSU 4-1 in SEC Softball Tournament The Oklahoma Sooners earned a strong win over the No. 9 LSU Tigers behind a fantastic pitching performance from Sam Landry. Landry recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, recording a couple of full-count strikeouts to keep the Tigers' offense at bay. The Sooners provided Landry with some offense in the bottom of the first when they loaded the bases with three walks against LSU pitcher Sydney Berzon. Berzon then hit Cydney Sanders with a pitch to allow the first run of the game. That's all Oklahoma could come away with as Berzon forced three ground outs to get out of the inning. Landry allowed a couple of walks in the top of the second but the Tigers couldn't capitalize against Oklahoma's ace. Neither team got on the board in the second or third innings. Landry retired the side in order in the third and fourth innings and Sydney Barker came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to provide a little insurance. That was until the fifth when Cydney Sanders provided Oklahoma their first SEC tournament home run, blasting a two-run bomb to put the Sooners up 4-0 in the fifth. LSU finally got on the board in the sixth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, but that's all the damage Landry allowed. In the top of the seventh, Landry recorded the shutdown inning, retiring the side in order to close out the game. In the complete-game shutout, Landry allowed just one hit, four walks, and one earned fun. She threw 125 pitches to move to 19-4 on the season. Sanders had a fantastic game at the plate, going 1-for-1 with a home run, a walk, a hit by pitch, and three RBIs. Ella Parker and Abigale Dayton were the only other Sooners to reach base twice. The Sooners now await the winner of Arkansas vs. Tennessee. Arkansas defeated Georgia on a Bri Ellis walk-off grand slam. Tennessee is playing its first game of the tournament on Thursday. SEC Softball Tournament Predictions

SEC Softball Tournament Predictions SEC Softball has provided several twists and turns this season, the first with Oklahoma and Texas in the league. Though the Oklahoma Sooners won the regular season title, league play revealed that there are a number of teams that could take the tournament title and are legit contenders for the national championship. Oklahoma swept Texas. Florida and Tennessee took series from the Sooners. Tennessee took a series from Texas. Texas A&M took a series from Florida. Texas took two of three from Florida. That's five of the top six teams who have beaten up on each other all season. Throw Arkansas into the mix, who could beat any team in the league, and the SEC tournament is wide open. By winning the regular season SEC championship, the Oklahoma Sooners earned the top seed in the SEC Tournament, which takes place in Athens, Georgia, home of the Bulldogs this week. The tournament will begin on Tuesday and run through Saturday in a single-elimination format. Who's going to win it all? Here are our predictions for the SEC Softball Tournament, the schedule, and broadcast information for this week in Athens. But it feels crazier to pick against them. They may not win it all. The SEC is deep and talented. Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Texas A&M, and Arkansas all have the potential to take the tournament title. But Oklahoma has the best coaching staff in softball and a lineup that can score with anyone. If they can get better pitching performances like they got in the Texas series, the Sooners could find themselves hoisting another trophy by the end of the weekend.
