Discover the world's first hydrogen outboard engine-powered boat

Imagine powering your boat not with gasoline but with clean hydrogen fuel. That's exactly what Yamaha, together with Roush Industries and Regulator Marine, is working on right now. They're developing the world's first hydrogen-combustion outboard engine, aiming to make boating greener and more sustainable. This is part of Yamaha's big plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, using a mix of electric, alternative fuels and now hydrogen technology. To reach their goal, a specially modified Regulator Marine 26XO boat was taken to a hydrogen fueling station. The team filled its tanks with hydrogen for the very first time, which was a huge milestone. This 26-foot boat runs on a tweaked version of Yamaha's powerful 450hp XTO outboard engine, but instead of gasoline, it's fueled by gaseous hydrogen. Matt Van Benschoten from Roush, who's been deeply involved in the project, called it "a big moment." He handled the tricky job of designing and integrating the hydrogen fuel system, making sure everything was safe and worked smoothly. Yamaha started with their largest offshore outboard, the XTO 450, and made some smart changes to handle hydrogen. They adjusted parts like the cylinder heads, fuel lines and injectors to work with hydrogen's unique properties. But most of the engine is still the same as the gasoline version. The boat itself was modified to fit three high-pressure hydrogen tanks, each holding fuel at 700 bar (that's super-high pressure). These tanks are designed to expand as they fill up, so Yamaha's engineers had to come up with clever mounting solutions that let the tanks move a bit without causing problems. Though Yamaha hasn't disclosed the gasoline equivalency of the hydrogen tanks, they are striving to achieve optimal capacity for marine industry applications. Safety is a huge focus here. The boat uses a standard hydrogen refueling connector and follows strict protocols to make sure filling up is safe and efficient. There's even tank monitoring feedback between the boat and the fueling station that monitors tank conditions and can stop refueling if things get too hot. Inside the boat, multiple hydrogen detectors keep an eye on gas levels. If hydrogen starts to build up, the system alerts the captain. If it gets too high, the engine shuts down and vents the gas safely. Plus, Roush designed a special ventilation system to make sure any leaked hydrogen escapes from the highest points on the boat, since hydrogen is lighter than air and rises. Yamaha first showed off this hydrogen outboard at the Miami Boat Show, then took it to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas to get the automotive and marine industries talking about hydrogen infrastructure. They've built two boats so far: one for display and one for real-world testing. Now, the team is focused on fine-tuning the system, running safety tests and figuring out how far the boat can go on a tank of hydrogen. They're also working on making refueling faster and more convenient. Right now, the tanks are cylindrical and take up a lot of space, limiting how much hydrogen the boat can carry. However, in the future, Yamaha hopes to use other tank alternatives to integrate more efficiently and fit better inside the boat hull. Finding the right parts for these super-high-pressure hydrogen systems isn't easy either; the supply chain is still catching up. However, with partners like Roush and Regulator Marine, Yamaha is pushing through these challenges. And it's not stopping there. Yamaha recently acquired electric outboard maker Torqeedo, showing they're serious about exploring all kinds of clean marine propulsion technologies. Ben Speciale, president of Yamaha's U.S. Marine Business Unit, tells Cyberguy, "Our hydrogen outboard concept is on the water now, and we're learning more about how to optimize its performance every day. We believe a multiple-technology solution is the best way to achieve cleaner products on the water, and hydrogen represents one of those pathways within our product line. We're optimistic about the future of hydrogen in the marine industry, and we look forward to sharing specific performance data as it becomes available." Yamaha's hydrogen outboard project is about rethinking how we power our boats in a way that's safe, practical and sustainable. While there's still work to do, this collaboration is making real progress toward cleaner waters and greener adventures. If hydrogen can take off in boating, it could change the game for the entire marine industry. Do you think hydrogen-powered outboard engines are the real future of boating or just an idea that still has a long way to go? Offending Ford and Ferrari Fans Simultaneously: Corruptt Mustang

Read the full story on Backfire News At the SEMA Show in Las Vegas back in 2018, a build was able to simultaneously offend both Ford and Ferrari fans. Called Corruptt Mustang, it took a 1968 Mustang and put under the hood a 4.3-liter V8 from a Ferrari and Nelson Racing twin turbos. Considering the bad blood between the two brands, not to mention their fans' well-known thirst for pure builds, the car caused quite the by Tony Arme of American Legends, this little pony really gets people talking, or makes them super disgusted. When we saw this build in person, we saw both reactions in real time and it was really something. Don't worry, the engine wasn't mercilessly yanked from a functional Ferrari. The donor F430 had been in a bad wreck, leaving significant front end and roof damage, but the powertrain was untouched. That means the 4.3-liter 90-degree V8 needed to be rescued anyway. Most would think to drop it into another Ferrari, but Arme decided to go for something unusual and controversial instead. We think he nailed it. While the engine is the centerpiece of this build, once you get over that initial shock you'll notice the body and interior are far from stock. The roof has been chopped about 2.5 inches, the windshield is laid back, all the glass is flush, the bespoke acrylic bumpers are molded in, and the side exhaust is completely custom. There's also a RideTech air ride suspension to adjust the ride height. The car rolls on Avant Garde F461 wheels with Toyo tires, helping to ensure optimal handling. In addition, the floor pans are made of carbon fiber, while the majority of the interior was donated by a Lamborghini. With the twin-turbo setup, this build is pushing somewhere around 700-horsepower, plenty to get the pony dashing in a hurry. The Tremec T56 six-speed with a manual shifter adds to the fun While an LS swap into a Mustang is enough to rankle the Blue Oval crowd, the Corruptt Mustang really irks both Ford and Ferrari fans in a way nothing else will. Custom 1951 Ford Coupe Is A $1.4 Million Car

Read the full story on Backfire News While this custom 1951 Ford Coupe looks cool, knowing it cost $1.4 million to build is shocking. After all, we know what kinds of supercars or hypercars you could buy with that kind of cash and that list is impressive, to say the least. But none of those are quite like this ride.A creation by Wicked Fabrication, this car has been featured in magazines, appeared at the 2016 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, was on Jay Leno's Garage, and won big awards, capturing the hearts of gearheads all over. You might have seen it before, but this review of the Ford by Autotopia LA helps dive into the details. And there are plenty of details on this ride. As they say, that's where the devil resides and that's certainly true here. We're fond of saying it's the small things that separate the good builds from those that are truly excellent. After the car made the media rounds, it quietly disappeared. It wasn't until years later the current owner just happened to be perusing a boutique car dealer's inventory, noticing this '51 Ford sitting among far lesser rides. If you look at the car versus other '51 Ford Coupes, you'll notice it looks far different and quite frankly much better. The top isn't chopped, it's been pancaked about 1.5 inches. Wicked Fabrication did wedge suction the car, cutting out 5.5 inches from the front and 2.5 inches in the rear, which is in large part why it looks so much sleeker. The shop fabricated a new hood out of aluminum, which also takes some of the bubbly ugliness out of Ford's original design. Other details were added to gain the appearance of a period racecar. They absolutely nailed it, but apparently after it left Wicked Fabrication the car was neglected. The current owner put in the effort to bring it back up to show car standards and it looks absolutely amazing. If you watch the video, you'll learn about so many of the details, it's a good way to spend half an hour. Images via Autotopia LA/YouTube
