Mais welcomes SIS Forum (Malaysia)'s move to drop ‘Islam' from name
SHAH ALAM, Aug 1 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) has welcomed the decision by SIS Forum (Malaysia) to drop the word 'Islam' from the name 'Sisters In Islam', which the non-profit organisation had previously used. Mais chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin described the move as appropriate and a reflection of the organisation's willingness to respect the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is the Head of Islam in the state. Following the decision, Mais has advised all parties to refrain from using the name 'Sisters In Islam' when referring to the organisation in any future statements or publications. Salehuddin said the Sultan had also reminded SIS Forum (Malaysia), along with other companies, organisations and entities, to respect the position of Islam as the religion of the federation and the state, and to consult state religious authorities on matters relating to Islam. 'His Royal Highness also advised SIS Forum (Malaysia) and all parties to exercise greater caution when issuing statements or publications related to Islam. 'This is to ensure that any message conveyed to the public does not conflict with the true teachings of Islam, in accordance with the beliefs and practices of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah,' he said in a statement yesterday. He added that the Sultan, through Mais, had expressed hope that SIS Forum (Malaysia) would continue its efforts to raise awareness on women's rights and Islamic family law in accordance with authentic Islamic teachings. 'As an organisation with influence in society, SIS Forum (Malaysia) should also focus on fostering unity among the community in support of national harmony,' he said. Earlier, the media reported that SIS Forum (Malaysia), during an extraordinary general meeting on July 11, had decided to remove the word 'Islam' from its name, in line with the Sultan's earlier decree. The organisation now operates under its registered name, SIS Forum (Malaysia). — Bernama

SIS Forum removes 'Sisters in Islam' name following royal rebuke
by AKMAR ANNUAR SIS Forum (Malaysia) will cease using the name 'Sisters in Islam' following a decision reached at its EGM on July 11, in response to recent remarks by the Sultan of Selangor. The NGO, which has long advocated for gender equality within the framework of Islamic family law, said it would now be publicly identified only by its registered name, SIS Forum (Malaysia). ED Rozana Isa said the change would not deter the group from continuing its core work. 'Even as we drop the word 'Islam' from our pen name, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating for gender equality and justice in Islamic family law,' she said in a statement. The group clarified that its advocacy had always aimed to uphold the welfare of Muslim women and families within the legal context of Islam, and not to undermine the religion itself. It cited persistent challenges such as domestic violence, unpaid alimony, extrajudicial polygamy and gender-insensitive interpretations of family law. 'These concerns are real and systemic. They demand attention, not dismissal,' Rozana added. She also expressed hope that the move would end the long-standing dispute over the use of the organisation's former name and pave the way for constructive engagement with all parties. 'We hope this puts an end to the long-standing contention over our name and allows us to go forward in good faith with all parties,' she said. Last month, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah expressed concern after the Federal Court ruled that a 2014 fatwa by the Selangor Fatwa Committee applied only to individuals and not to SIS Forum in its capacity as a registered organisation. In light of the decision, the Ruler urged the organisation to stop using the term 'Sisters in Islam' to prevent the name of the religion from being used indiscriminately for organisational gain.

Sisters in Islam changes name following Selangor Sultan's advice
The group will now go by its registered name, SIS Forum (Malaysia). Rozana. KUALA LUMPUR - Women's rights group Sisters in Islam (SIS) has officially dropped the word Islam from its public name, following the advice of the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. The group will now go by its registered name, SIS Forum (Malaysia). The decision was finalised during an extraordinary general meeting on July 11, as confirmed by Executive Director Rozana Isa. 'Although we have removed the word Islam from our name, we remain steadfast in our commitment to promoting gender equality and justice in Islamic family laws. 'In the end, what matters most is our work for Muslim women and Malaysians as a whole,' she said in a statement on Thursday. Following advice from the Sultan of Selangor, Sisters in Islam has dropped "Islam" from its public name and will now be known as SIS Forum (Malaysia). Photo: Facebook Rozana expressed hope that the move would end the longstanding debate surrounding the group's name and open the door for wider collaboration. 'Unfortunately, our work has often been misinterpreted by certain parties. We are not challenging Islam but fighting for laws that should protect women within the family institution,' she explained. This comes after Sultan Sharafuddin voiced his disappointment over a Federal Court decision which stated that the July 31, 2014 fatwa did not apply to SIS Forum (Malaysia) because it is a corporate entity, not an individual. In light of the court ruling, the Sultan urged the organisation to stop using the name Sisters in Islam in any form of publication or on any platform linked to the group. The Sultan emphasised that using the word Islam in SIS Forum (Malaysia)'s name and materials could cause confusion among the Muslim community. More Like This
